Ultimate Magus in Cultivation World-Chapter 265: Hunt
The team returned to the academy under the fading light, the forest around them alive with the sounds of nocturnal creatures stirring. Lanterns flickered along the training grounds, casting long shadows across the paths. Ling led the team toward the central courtyard, where maps and strategy boards had been set up in anticipation of their next challenge.
Inside the strategy hall, Tian Lei waited, pacing slowly. He stopped as the team entered, his gaze assessing each of them.
"Today," he began, voice calm but commanding, "you faced multiple targets at once. You learned coordination, patience, and the importance of reading your opponents. But your next test will demand foresight, adaptability, and decisiveness. You will face a high-level predator—faster, stronger, and far more cunning than anything you've encountered."
Han Yi shifted uncomfortably.
"…We thought the Shadowfangs were bad enough."
Tian Lei's expression didn't change.
"…You handled them well, but a single high-level predator can turn small mistakes into deadly consequences. Your success depends on anticipating its behavior and controlling the terrain, not just matching its strength."
Mu Chen leaned on his staff, thoughtful.
"…We'll need traps, restraints… maybe coordinated attacks from multiple angles."
Yue nodded slowly, eyes focused.
"…We'll need to stay perfectly synchronized… one misstep could be fatal."
Lei Feng's grin was faint, tension in his jaw betraying focus.
"…I like challenges like this. Finally something that can test all of us."
Tian Lei gestured to a large map of the surrounding forest.
"This predator—called a Duskfang—is territorial, highly intelligent, and able to ambush from multiple directions. Its den is in the northern cliffs, a rocky area with uneven footing. Approach carefully. Observe before striking. Step by step, together. You will track, anticipate, and contain it without unnecessary risk."
Ling studied the map carefully, then looked at her team.
"…We'll need to coordinate signals, maintain spacing, and control its movements. No rash decisions. Step by step, together."
Tian Lei handed them supplies: specialized binding ropes, potions to heal minor injuries, smoke bombs for distraction, and provisions for extended tracking.
"Use everything wisely. The Duskfang will test your limits. Return with it subdued… or return not at all."
The team spent the evening preparing. Ling oversaw practice drills in movement and positioning, Han Yi refined his staff maneuvers, Mu Chen worked on sweeping attacks and defensive stances, Yue practiced precise strikes and quick repositioning, and Lei Feng studied traps and ambush tactics.
By the time the moon rose high above the academy, the team was ready. Lanterns flickered one last time as they assembled at the forest's edge, the northern cliffs looming in the distance.
Ling took a deep breath, feeling the weight of responsibility settle over her shoulders. She met each member's gaze.
"…This hunt will be our hardest yet. Focus, anticipate, and act as one. Step by step… together."
With synchronized movements, the team stepped into the shadowed forest, their senses heightened. Every snap of a twig, every rustle of leaves, every whisper of wind carried the potential for danger. The Duskfang awaited—intelligent, swift, and lethal.
And this time, there would be no second chances.
The forest grew darker as they moved north, the canopy thick and shadows deepening. Every footfall was careful, deliberate. The team spread slightly, Ling at the center, Han Yi to the left, Mu Chen sweeping the right flank, Yue close behind Ling, and Lei Feng scouting higher ground whenever the terrain allowed.
"Keep spacing," Ling whispered, eyes scanning the dimly lit underbrush. "The Duskfang is clever. It won't reveal itself unless it wants to—anticipate, don't chase. Step by step… together."
Han Yi adjusted his grip on his staff, listening intently.
"…Footsteps… light, but deliberate. Not ours."
Mu Chen crouched low, staff tapping the ground softly, feeling vibrations.
"…It's moving… ahead and slightly to the east. Probably testing our reaction."
Yue's dagger glimmered faintly in the moonlight as she mirrored Ling's movements.
"…Together… we respond as one. Don't get baited."
Lei Feng's eyes narrowed, observing the terrain.
"…Cliffs ahead, rocky footing… perfect for an ambush. Expect the unexpected."
A rustle to their left drew immediate attention. Ling raised a hand, halting the team. Through the shadows, a pair of amber eyes glowed briefly before disappearing behind a boulder. The Duskfang was watching, waiting.
"Observe first… do not engage prematurely," Ling whispered. "Step by step."
The creature emerged from the shadows, sleek and muscular, its fur darker than the night, blending perfectly with the rocks and trees. Its movements were silent, deliberate, eyes sharp and calculating. It circled slowly, testing their spacing and reactions.
Han Yi shifted, keeping distance but ready to strike.
"…It's calculating our positions… waiting for a mistake."
Mu Chen stepped slightly forward, staff sweeping in a defensive arc.
"…It's trying to flank us… anticipate its path."
Yue's eyes tracked every twitch of muscle, every flick of tail.
"…We move as one. Any isolated strike could cost us."
Ling signaled forward carefully.
"Divide slightly… funnel it toward the narrow pass ahead. We control the terrain. Step by step, together."
The Duskfang lunged suddenly at Han Yi, a blur of teeth and claws. Reflexes honed from their previous hunts kicked in—Han Yi sidestepped, swinging his staff to deflect the attack. Mu Chen moved in from the opposite side, forcing the predator to veer off course. Yue darted in with precision strikes, distracting it further while avoiding its snapping jaws.
Lei Feng activated a prepared trap, a simple but effective net that tangled the Duskfang's legs momentarily, slowing it down. The team advanced with calculated steps, driving it toward the narrow rocky pass.
Ling's voice was low but commanding.
"…Contain… do not overextend… coordinate every movement. Step by step, together."
The Duskfang struggled against the net, growling with intelligence and ferocity. It lashed out, forcing Han Yi and Mu Chen to block in perfect timing. Yue leapt aside, landing behind the creature to strike its side, while Lei Feng moved to secure ropes for restraint.
Finally, after tense minutes that stretched endlessly, the predator was restrained, growling but unable to escape. Ling stepped forward, hand raised, calming her breathing. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
"…We did it. Step by step. Together. Remember this—anticipation, coordination, and control of the environment win the hunt, not reckless strength."
The team regrouped, sweat and dirt smeared across their faces, but a sense of accomplishment grounding their movements. The Duskfang, though dangerous, had been subdued without fatal injury—a testament to their growth, coordination, and trust in each other.
From the ridge above, Tian Lei watched silently. Then he gave a sharp whistle, a small smile breaking his stern demeanor.
"…Well done. You survived a high-level predator. Tomorrow… the lessons only get tougher."
Ling nodded, guiding the team back through the forest. Every step was careful, deliberate. Step by step, together—they had learned the truth of survival in the wild, and the forest had etched its lessons deeply into their minds.
The night stretched on, the northern cliffs behind them dark and silent. Ahead lay the academy, and the promise of yet more challenges—but the team knew they were stronger now, prepared to face whatever awaited in the shadows.
