Turning Antagonist to Protagonist: He is Both Soft and Fierce-Chapter 277 - 272: The Villain Scolds Me Every Day
Song Tingfan’s first reaction was recalling his sister-in-law saying she had something with someone else that day. Over the years, besides Zhang Dong, he had never seen her happy with anyone else.
His hands hanging at his sides subconsciously clenched, but he ultimately spoke in a normal tone, "Hmm, getting married."
Zhang Dong, the "scapegoat," glanced at the young woman beside him and forced a smile, "Come and have a drink at the wedding. We need to go pick some vegetables in the fields, we’ll get going first."
"Daddy, hurry up, hurry up, fly fly fly." The child’s eyes curved into crescents.
"Alright, alright, fly fly fly."
Zhang Dong started running quickly, making the child giggle.
Apart from being a mama’s boy, Zhang Dong was okay. Sigh, the regrets of the original self could only remain regrets now.
Lin Qiao felt sorry for the original self’s regrets, but in the man’s eyes, it seemed like she still had feelings. He awkwardly said, "Let’s go home." With that, he walked away.
The inexplicable emotion left Lin Qiao stunned for a moment, and although she vaguely knew it was jealousy, she still didn’t quite grasp it.
She hadn’t said a word to Zhang Dong from start to finish, barely glanced at him.
She had already forgotten the lie about her not being a maiden anymore.
Back home, Song Qin and the others were shelling dried peanuts to prepare for the wedding feast.
Although they didn’t know how many people would come, Song Qin and the others still prepared abundantly. A wedding only happens once, and if there’s leftover food, it could always be eaten by the family later.
Lin Qiao washed her hands and sat down to help with the shelling, "Grandma, don’t peel too much, not many people will come."
"Peel more, whatever’s leftover we’ll eat ourselves."
Perhaps because people feel more energetic during happy events, Song Qin’s wrinkled face appeared rosy, and her eyes were less cloudy than before.
She looked at Song Tingfan sitting next to Lin Qiao and, seeing his tense expression, assumed he was upset because of the visit to the tomb, sighed softly, and then said, "Are the red quilts ready? Is your room set up as the bridal chamber, or Qiao’er’s room?"
Lin Qiao’s room was in the main house, bigger than the other rooms.
Song Tingfan looked at Lin Qiao, who met his gaze, "..."
Since they already agreed to the fake marriage, giving up a room wasn’t a big deal.
"My room then, it’s bigger."
"Good, then Qiao’er, your room can’t be used for a while. I’ll tidy up the storage room, and you sleep in Tingfan’s room; Tingfan can sleep in the storage room." Song Qin didn’t ask for Song Tingfan’s opinion, guessing he would agree.
Lin Qiao didn’t want Song Tingfan to sleep in the storage room, "Grandma, I’ll sleep in the storage room, the bed there is too small, he’ll be cramped."
"There are too many things in the storage room, hard to move out, I’ll sleep on the floor," Song Tingfan said truthfully, as they recently bought many items for the wedding, all stored in the storage room.
Song Rong nodded in agreement, hoarsely saying, "Alright, have your grandma make the floor bed more comfortable."
Lin Qiao swallowed her words back, and afterwards, Song Qin and Mrs. Fan discussed wedding preparations with laughter, discussing what dishes to prepare.
...
In the afternoon, someone in the village was talking about how Niu Er got caught. The Niu family was in a frenzy, and Old Man Niu finally carried some eggs to the Song’s second family.
Lin Qiao offered him a bowl of water. Though Old Man Niu had an anxious expression, he spoke kindly, "Good child."
After taking a sip, he looked at Song Tingfan with some difficulty, "Tingfan, I heard my mischievous son broke into your shop to steal something. How much was stolen? I’ll compensate you. Can you speak to the pavilion chief to drop the matter?"
Song Tingfan didn’t directly respond to him, instead solemnly, "Grandpa Niu, do you want him to keep behaving like this? This will only encourage his bad habits."
"The border has been stable for years, there won’t be any wars, he won’t be in life-threatening danger."
Speaking of Niu Er, Old Man Niu felt both angry and pained. He had previously thought Niu Er was sincere towards Widow Song and let him propose, but not only did he fail, he also sullied Widow Song’s reputation.
He only found out when Lin Han angrily came to settle things, and in that moment of fury, he gave Niu Er a serious beating.
The mischievous son had a good heart but was just errant, making people dislike him.
He sighed heavily, "Tingfan, it’s not that I don’t want to intervene; it’s just that this rascal is incorrigible, and he won’t take orders."
"There are ways to train him in the military camp, I can send him to a comrade I trust who can look after him a bit," Song Tingfan still did not relent. He wouldn’t relent; Niu Er couldn’t stay in the village, at least not until his sister-in-law moved with him to Lunan City.
The man lied without stuttering anymore, Lin Qiao glanced at him, then glanced again, silently clicking her tongue several times.
Becoming less honest with age?
Old Man Niu felt that Song Tingfan had a good heart, even after his rascal son did a bad deed, he was still willing to help. "If so, that would be wonderful, Tingfan, kid, you have such a good heart."
If it helps the rascal change his ways, spending a few years at the border might not be bad.
After repeatedly expressing his gratitude, he finally left.
He had not been gone long when Lin Qiao went to burn paper for the Lin family’s ancestors. The Lin family’s graves were numerous, from Lin Han’s grandparents and parents to his uncles.
She burned from this mountain to that one, almost like walking from the village entrance to the town.
Back at the Lin house, Lin Qiao’s legs were sore from walking, and she sat on a stool, not wanting to move. Lin Ping and Lin An, the two little ones, helped her massage her legs, alternating with sweet calls of "Auntie."
Lin Qiao gave each a "hardship fee" of five cents, jokingly saying, "Xiao Ping and Xiao’an will surely be good to their wives in the future."
Lin Ping already knew what a wife was; he wasn’t a bit shy, "Hehe, I’ll be better to my wife than Uncle."
Though he hadn’t seen it, he claimed to be better than the uncle at this. Lin Qiao curiously asked, "Have you seen your uncle being good?"
She simply wanted to know how Lin Ping thought Song Tingfan was good to her.
"I’ve seen it; Uncle is really good to Auntie, bought lots of snacks and stacked them in Grandma’s room," Lin An eagerly answered.
Hearing this, Lin Qiao chuckled, those weren’t exactly snacks, probably meant for entertaining guests. She gently tapped his forehead, "Can’t have too much, let Grandma give you some later."
Lin An beamed widely, "Auntie, you’re the best."
While cleaning mud off shoes, Li Guifen listened to their conversation, laughing, "Don’t give them anymore, their mouths will get sore, just the thought of it makes me mad. I don’t know which of them, but one of them dug a hole under the bag to sneak bites. If I hadn’t caught them, who knows if it’d still be edible."
Hearing this, Lin Qiao laughed until her stomach hurt; these two kids were immensely amusing. She playfully teased, "If your uncle finds out, surely he’ll spank you."
Unexpectedly, Lin An and Lin Ping shook their heads in sync, like little rattles.
"Uncle won’t."
"He won’t, Uncle won’t."
"Why wouldn’t he? He’s quite fierce, always scolding me at home, even made me cry," Lin Qiao teased them with a serious expression.
"Auntie, you’re lying, Uncle wouldn’t scold you, Uncle’s always smiling when he looks at you," Lin Ping replied, half believing her words.
