Transmigration: On the Gossip Front-Chapter 1886 - 1887: Female Passerby Intellectual Youth 29
Zhang Yu finished the last bit of work, found a place to lie down directly, "So tired."
Then she drank the last bit of water from her bottle. After a short rest, Han Jing called the recorder to come for a review.
The recorder quickly took a look around, "Very good."
After thanking him, Han Jing was ready to go back, looking at Zhang Yu who was still lying on the ground, "Are you going back?"
Though exhausted, Zhang Yu definitely didn’t want to stay here. If Wang Yan saw she was already off work, she might drag her over to help out.
Of course, she wasn’t stupid and would never help Wang Yan with her work. But in this summer heat, expending energy arguing with someone is foolish.
It was better to go back, rest well, and then, while there aren’t too many people, take a shower, wash her clothes, and wait for dinner.
Thinking of this, Zhang Yu’s walking speed quickened.
When passing by Zhao Tong, she saw she still had a lot of work left, "Zhao Tong."
Zhao Tong heard her name and looked up. It was Zhang Yu, "All done?"
Zhang Yu nodded, "I’m going back to take a shower, can I borrow your thermos for some hot water?"
Zhao Tong nodded, "Sure."
Once she swiftly got back to the dorm, she soaked in hot water and took a bath, "It’s a good thing the tub is long, so my feet can stretch out."
The carpenter Ding made long and round tubs. Zhang Yu thought about it and decided to buy the long one, at least she could stretch her legs, "Actually, I should have bought a foot soaking tub."
These days, pulling weeds and harvesting are nothing compared to the hardest labor; soaking feet after that would feel great.
The idea was nice, but Zhang Yu quickly gave it up. She already had several basins, and people thought she was extravagant. If she got a foot soaking tub, she’d probably be famous across the whole farm.
The warm water lulled her into a daze. Zhang Yu was almost asleep when she heard chattering outside. Immediately, she got up swiftly and dressed.
After getting up, she looked at the bathwater in the tub, sighing. Soaking was comfortable, but dealing with the aftermath was not easy.
Using a water scoop to empty the tub, she made a few trips to get the bathwater clean, "I should build a shower room and let the bathwater flow out directly through a drain."
But then again, in the original owner’s memory, everyone took baths like this, even if they complained about the inconvenience, nothing changed.
After washing and hanging her clothes on the clothesline, she was just about to lay down to rest when Zhao Tong came back, choosing instead to rest at the door.
As Zhao Tong returned, people started coming back one after another. The first ones washed up; those who came later just washed their faces by the sink and chatted.
Zhang Yu was about to listen in on what everyone was talking about today when someone pulled her aside, "Zhang Yu, you were next to Wang Yan today, did she get into a fight?"
Zhang Yu nodded and explained what had happened. Everyone then knew Wang Yan had a quarrel with the old knowledge youth. Some of them were far away and didn’t know much, but hearing Zhang Yu’s account, they were amazed.
"She’s something else, actually causing a scene with the old knowledge youth." People knew Wang Yan could be troublesome, but they didn’t expect her to cause this much trouble.
"So doesn’t she need a new old knowledge youth tomorrow?" Li Hong already said she didn’t want to team up with her and would surely refuse tomorrow.
Zhang Yu didn’t say anything. In the original owner’s memory, even if today’s incident hadn’t happened, no old knowledge youth would take her with them tomorrow. The reason was that weeding wasn’t considered tough work, so no guide was necessary.
However, the new intellectual youth had a lighter workload than the old knowledge youth, as a way to accommodate newcomers. But now, with Wang Yan stirring up trouble, Zhang Yu couldn’t be sure if the captain would be displeased and decide to give the new intellectual youth a hard time.
Wang Yan was back at the front making a self-criticism. She knew she had to do it well, or she wouldn’t pass.
Yesterday afternoon, she had been working alone, thinking that, as a newcomer, they wouldn’t be too strict with her.
But as it turned out, like with the old knowledge youth, she had to pull all the weeds. Eventually, she passed the inspection. By the time she reached the cafeteria, it was already 6:30, and the people serving food were about to finish. Naturally, there wasn’t much food left.
Wang Yan hadn’t rested well the night before and felt everyone was bullying her.
Though angry, Wang Yan didn’t dare act recklessly and earnestly made her self-criticism.
The captain listened in from the back, and though not very satisfied with Wang Yan’s self-reflection, it was better than the day before, "In the future, focus on your work, don’t start arguments as soon as you arrive."
Everyone hung their heads in silence, knowing Wang Yan had gotten on the captain’s bad side. Any laziness or mistakes in the future would surely haunt her.
Hearing the captain’s words, Wang Yan froze briefly. It wasn’t a surprise, but she hadn’t expected it. Despite two people quarreling, the captain singled her out by name. She was, of course, very unhappy.
Storming back into the crowd, she kept a mental note of this day, feeling angry. If given the chance, she would settle the score.
The captain didn’t care about Wang Yan’s feelings. She was just a young girl, so he promptly distributed the tasks.
Hearing the tasks, Zhang Yu was stunned. It was truly the worst-case scenario—no old knowledge youth guidance, and everyone had the same workload.
The new intellectual youth were dumbfounded. It was their second day in the field, and not only was there no guidance, but the workload was the same as for the others.
The old knowledge youth were also taken aback. There was supposed to be special treatment for newcomers, but after their surprise turned to joy.
After all, the more work there was, the more they achieved. The more the newcomers did, the less the old knowledge youth had to. No fool would oppose such a good deal.
The new intellectual youth were stunned but assumed that this was the norm, so they quickly accepted it.
But when everyone was collecting their tools and learned that previous batches of new intellectual youth had received special treatment, they became outraged. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Those with a hot temper confronted the captain, asking why they hadn’t been treated the same.
Faced with such accusations, the captain wasn’t surprised—it was only a matter of time before these newcomers found out, "The new intellectual youth receive special treatment because they are newcomers and unfamiliar with things, so the workload increases gradually."
"But I see you all are full of energy."
"Since you have the energy for other things, you should focus on your work."
"That should keep you from causing trouble." With that, the captain turned and left.
The old knowledge youth could more or less guess the reason, though they weren’t certain. Hearing the captain’s words confirmed that the new intellectual youth were suffering because of Wang Yan.
The hot-headed male youth burst out in anger, "Wang Yan, you’ve really done it now. Stirring up trouble is one thing, but dragging us into it?"
"Exactly." Originally, no matter what antics Wang Yan pulled, everyone just watched the show. But now that it affected them, they couldn’t bear it and had no patience left.
