Transmigration; Married to My Ex-Fiancé's Uncle-Chapter 231; Kidnapping 4
City General. Where Lu Zeyan was currently admitted with his mysterious condition. Where the Lu family was undoubtedly gathered, dealing with their own crisis.
"We could wait," Shuyin offered quietly. She didn’t want to come across them, and the situation would definitely become more complicated. "Use another doctor..."
"No." Lu Yuze’s response was immediate and absolute. "Dr. Zhang is the only physician Yuyan fully trusts. We’re going to City General."
He made another call. "Ting Fei, status on Chen Xiao?"
Shuyin’s stomach dropped. Chen Xiao was still at Madame Chen’s boutique, waiting with security, probably terrified about what had happened to Yuyan.
"Bring him directly to City General Hospital," Lu Yuze ordered. "Private entrance. Have him meet us in Dr. Zhang’s examination room. ETA?"
There was a pause as he listened.
"Good. Make it happen." He ended the call and looked at Shuyin. "Chen Xiao will meet us there. Ting Fei’s already en route with him."
Shuyin nodded, relief mixing with her nervous tension. At least Chen Xiao would be accounted for, would see that Yuyan was safe, wouldn’t be left alone wondering and worrying.
The helicopter began its descent.
City General Hospital’s helipad was designed for emergency medical transport, and their arrival drew immediate attention. Medical staff rushed forward with a gurney, but Lu Yuze waved them off.
"Private patient. Dr. Zhang is expecting us. I’ll carry her."
He stepped out of the helicopter, still cradling Yuyan against his chest, his suit jacket whipping in the rotor wash. Shuyin followed, her legs unsteady but functional, her hands still betraying her with that persistent tremor.
A hospital administrator appeared, clearly having been alerted to expect VIP arrival. "Mr. Lu, if you’ll follow me... Dr. Zhang has prepared a private examination room on the third floor...."
"Lead the way," Lu Yuze said tersely.
They moved through the hospital corridors quickly, drawing stares from staff and patients alike. Lu Yuze, in his disheveled, expensive suit, was carrying an unconscious teenager. Shuyin followed in designer clothes that were now rumpled and dusty from the alley confrontation.
They must have looked like disaster survivors.
Which, Shuyin supposed, they were.
The administrator guided them toward a private elevator, inserted a key card. "This will take you directly to the third-floor private wing..."
The elevator doors opened.
And Lu Cheng stepped out.
He stopped mid-stride when he saw them, his expression cycling through surprise, shock, and something darker as he took in the scene. His brother, disheveled and carrying an unconscious girl. And her, Lin Shuyin. His son’s former fiancée. The woman who’d been released from prison just the other day.
"Shuyin?" Lu Cheng’s voice carried genuine shock. "What are you doing here?"
His eyes swept over her, rumpled designer clothes, visible trembling in her hands, the way she stood close to Lu Yuze, as if seeking shelter. Then down to the unconscious girl in Lu Yuze’s arms.
Recognition flashed across his face.
"That’s..." He paused, clearly calculating what he should or shouldn’t say. "Isn’t that the girl from the southern branch this morning? The one you claimed wasn’t related to our family?"
Shuyin’s throat tightened. She remembered that moment, Lu Cheng calling, demanding to know about Yuyan, and her deflecting, denying any family connection because their arrangement was supposed to be private.
"She had a medical emergency," Shuyin said, her voice unsteady. "We’re here to see a doctor."
"We?" Lu Cheng’s gaze sharpened, looking between Shuyin and his brother with growing confusion and suspicion. "Since when do you and Yuze...."
"The girl needed medical attention," Lu Yuze interrupted, his tone perfectly neutral, giving nothing away. "Shuyin was with her when the incident occurred. I’m here because Dr. Zhang is the attending physician."
It was masterfully vague. No confirmation of relationships, no denial either. Just facts that could be interpreted multiple ways.
Lu Cheng’s eyes narrowed. "Dr. Zhang is with Zeyan right now. My son is upstairs with some kind of neurological condition...." His gaze cut back to Shuyin with sudden, sharp intensity. "Your former fiancé, in case you’d forgotten. He was in a car accident this afternoon and now he can’t stop saying your name. Over and over. Just ’I love you, Shuyin’ like some kind of broken record."
Shuyin felt ice slide down her spine. She fought to keep her expression neutral, to not react to the confirmation that her curse was working exactly as intended.
She, too, couldn’t get enough courage to laugh when she had gone through such a tumultuous moment.
"That’s... unfortunate," she managed. "I hope he recovers very soon."
"Unfortunate," Lu Cheng repeated, his voice hardening. "You were released from prison a few days ago. You showed up at the southern branch with that girl...." he gestured to Yuyan "...claiming no family connection. By afternoon, my son is in a mysterious accident and can only speak your name. And now you’re here, at this hospital, with my brother, looking like you’ve been through a war zone."
His gaze turned accusatory. "What exactly is going on, Shuyin? What are you doing with Yuze? And why is he carrying an unconscious teenager while you stand there shaking like a leaf?"
"That’s enough," Lu Yuze said, his voice dropping to something dangerous. "Whatever conspiracy you’re building in your head, save it for later. Right now, this girl needs medical attention, and Dr. Zhang is the only physician qualified to provide it."
"This girl has a name," Lu Cheng said. "Though apparently we’re all pretending we don’t know what it is. Or whose daughter she is."
The words hung in the air, an acknowledgment that he knew, or suspected, exactly who Yuyan was. But he wasn’t saying it directly, wasn’t exposing the relationship that both brothers were clearly keeping hidden.
"Dr. Zhang," Lu Yuze repeated, his patience visibly thinning. "Where is he?"
Lu Cheng studied his brother for a long moment, then Shuyin again, his expression troubled and suspicious. "Third floor, room 307. He’s with Zeyan now, but he mentioned being called away for an emergency. I assume that the emergency is you."
