Transmigration; A Mother's Redemption and a perfect Wife.-Chapter 348; Calming down
Huo Ting Cheng didn’t turn, but his silence was a potent admission.
"I am suggesting," Zu Zhi continued, his voice dropping to a more pragmatic tone, "that you take a mild anxiolytic. Not to dull you, but to steady you. To bring the formidable Huo Ting Cheng back online, instead of the terrified man who is currently planning to build a prison out of love."
He gestured subtly to the medical bag he carried. "I have it with me. Let Huo Qi get you some water. You need to be the calm in her storm, not the source of a new one."
The words hung in the air, a stark mirror held up to Huo Ting Cheng’s escalating mania. The truth in them was a cold blade, piercing through the heat of his rage.
The fight seemed to drain from his shoulders all at once, leaving behind not calm, but a weary, devastating exhaustion.
He didn’t agree, but he no longer protested. His silence was a surrender, not to the doctor, but to the terrifying realization that Zu Zhi might be right, that the greatest threat to Tang Fei in this moment was him.
The next two hours saw a gradual, fragile calm settle over the pent office. Under Zu Zhi’s steadying presence and the subtle medication, the terrifying storm in Huo Ting Cheng’s eyes receded, leaving behind a weary, though controlled, composure.
They spoke in low tones, superficial discussions about business, security protocols, anything but the elephant in the room. It was a performance of normalcy, a deliberate effort to anchor Huo Ting Cheng back to reality.
The performance was interrupted by a soft sigh from the sofa.
Tang Fei stirred awake, her eyelids fluttering open. She blinked, her gaze clearing as she took in the unexpected gathering: her husband, Huo Qi, Huo Wu, and Dr. Zu Zhi, all seemingly engaged in a casual conversation.
There was no trace of the earlier terror or the drug-induced oblivion; she looked refreshed, as if she’d simply taken a long, peaceful nap.
Her eyes landed on Zu Zhi, and a warm, genuine smile lit up her face. "Dr. Zu? What a surprise! How come you’re so free today to visit this grumpy friend of yours?" she asked, playfully nudging her chin towards Huo Ting Cheng.
From across the room, Huo Ting Cheng’s eyes, now calm but still intensely watchful, were pinned at Zu Zhi with a silent warning.
Zu Zhi, the picture of professional ease, chuckled lightly. "Even a psychologist needs a break from his couch, Tang Fei. I was in the building for a consultation and decided to drag your husband away from his spreadsheets for a few minutes. He’s a terrible host, as always." 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
Before she could question further, Huo Ting Cheng was at her side, his movements swift but controlled. He knelt beside the sofa, his hand coming to rest gently on her forehead, then brushing her cheek. "How are you feeling?" he asked, his voice low and thick with a concern only she could hear.
"I’m perfectly fine," she said, her smile softening as she leaned into his touch. She even managed a light tease, her spirit seemingly restored to its usual brightness. "Better than you, by the looks of it. You still seem a little tense." She looked around, a flicker of confusion in her eyes. "But what am I doing here? Shouldn’t I be at the convention halls? The talent shows are today! What time is it? Already started?"
The room held its breath. She remembered the project, but the entire traumatic event at the school, the threat, the rescue, the nightmare, the breakdown, was all gone, wiped clean from her immediate memory.
Huo Ting Cheng’s expression was a masterpiece of neutral reassurance. "You were tired," he stated smoothly, his thumb stroking her hand. "You said you wanted to rest here for a while before going down. You must have been more exhausted than you thought."
Tang Fei stretched slightly, a look of pleasant surprise on her face. "Really? I suppose I was. I feel so fresh now, though! Like a new person." Her effortless bounce back to normalcy was both a relief and a profound shock to everyone present. They exchanged swift, knowing glances but said nothing.
Huo Ting Cheng, now visibly calmer, saw an opportunity. To cage her now, when she was so vibrant and unaware, would be an act of brutal cruelty. He had to adapt.
"Good," he said, a genuine, if slight, smile touching his lips. "If you’re feeling refreshed, you can conduct the final selections of your project. Huo Wu has been overseeing everything. You can take over from the control room here, via the live feed. It’s more efficient."
It was a compromise. She could have her purpose, but within the safety of his fortress, under his watchful eye. For now, it was enough.
Tang Fei’s eyes sparkled with excitement. "Really? That’s a brilliant idea! Let me see the feeds." She swung her legs off the sofa, ready to dive back into her work, the nightmare and the dark intentions it had spawned momentarily forgotten by all, except the man who would continue to stand guard over the shadows of her mind.
The massive screens in the pent office glowed with live feeds from the audition halls. Tang Fei, now fully immersed in her element, directed the selections with a focused energy that seemed to erase the trauma of the morning. Her voice, calm and decisive, issued commands to the teams on the ground, her passion for the project a bright, defiant flame.
Seeing her thus occupied, Huo Ting Cheng rose smoothly from his chair. A subtle tilt of his head was all the command needed. Huo Qi, tablet in hand, and Dr. Zu Zhi followed him through the sliding glass doors onto the expansive private balcony.
The city sprawled before them, a glittering tapestry of light and ambition, the distant hum of traffic and a soft whisper fifty floors below.
