Chapter 319: Arrival of Principal in the beast fence.

Behind him, Cecelia looked at Kael with wide eyes—astonished, breathless.

Nathan held her still, gaze locked on the rampaging Frostfang.

Kael stood in front of the injured students, fists raised, ready to fight the monster while Nathan protected Cecelia.

The battlefield had already split into two roles:

Nathan saved Cecelia.

Kael saved everyone else.

And the direwolf turned its icy gaze toward Kael.

The Frostfang Direwolf prowled in the middle of everything, breath steaming, fangs glimmering with cold.

Then Kael and Nathan stood side by side.

Nathan’s cape fluttered in the icy wind as magic symbols spun around his right hand.

Kael tightened his grip on his heavy sword with one hand, inhaling deeply.

"Kael," Nathan muttered without looking at him, "don’t die."

Kael rolled his shoulders. "I’ll try."

"Try? TRY?" Nathan shouted. "This thing is a C-Rank apex beast!"

Kael blinked. "...So?"

Nathan choked on his own breath.

"Why are you acting like this is normal!?"

But there was no time to argue.

The Frostfang Direwolf dug its claws into the frozen soil—

FWOOOOSH!

It shot forward like a white flash of death.

"MOVE!" Nathan roared.

Kael reacted first. He stepped in front of Nathan and raised his sword just as—

CLAAAAANG!

The beast’s claw slammed into Kael’s blade, sparks and ice shards flying everywhere.

Kael skidded backward, boots carving a deep line in the ground.

But he didn’t fall.

Nathan stared.

(H-he blocked that... with raw strength?)

The direwolf’s icy breath blasted toward him. Kael ducked, rolled sideways, and counter-slashed upward—

"ASTRAL SEVERANCE!"

A crescent wave of pale light shot out from Kael’s sword and carved across the wolf’s flank.

SPLATTER!

Blood sprayed—dark red staining the snow.

The Frostfang Direwolf yelped and backed away.

Nathan’s jaw dropped.

"You cut it! You actually cut it!"

Kael shook his numb arm. "It hurts though."

Then—

BOOOOOOM!

Nathan’s magic circle expanded beneath his feet.

Wind spiraled.

Mana crackled.

"Stand back, Kael!" Nathan shouted.

"Why?"

"BECAUSE I’M ABOUT TO NUKE IT!"

Nathan leapt high into the air, cape spinning, runes shining around his body.

"GALE–BURST: VORTEX SHATTER!!!"

A tornado of compressed wind exploded downward.

KRRRRRRAAAAAAAASH!

Snow, frost, and debris shot up like a blizzard.

The direwolf screamed and staggered, blood sprayed across its fur. Nathan landed lightly beside Kael.

Kael looked impressed.

"That was cool."

Nathan smirked. "Of course it was cool— I’m the top ranker for a reason."

But the beast wasn’t done.

Its eyes glowed ice-blue.

Frost spiraled around its mouth.

Nathan’s expression shifted instantly. "Shit—Kael! It’s doing a Frost Burst!"

FWOOOOOOM!

A cone of freezing wind exploded outward.

Kael grabbed Nathan by the collar and yanked him backward—

"DUCK!"

SHAAAAAAA!

The frost beam missed them by inches.

Everything behind them turned white—trees frozen solid, the ground crystallizing.

Nathan stared at the frozen landscape.

"That beam... could’ve killed half the class."

Kael nodded. "Let’s not get hit by that."

"NO SHIT!" Nathan yelled.

The direwolf snarled, kicked off, and lunged again.

Nathan slammed his foot into the ground.

"MANA STEP!"

His body blurred and he appeared behind the wolf, fists wrapped in wind mana.

He punched it—

BAM!

A shockwave erupted.

The direwolf spun mid-air and crashed into a frozen boulder.

Kael leaped after it.

Nathan blinked. "WAIT— DON’T JUST—!"

But Kael was already in motion.

He sprinted, sword raised.

The wolf charged simultaneously.

Kael shouted—

"ASTRAL PUNCH!"

His fist glowed white, energy crackling like a star being born.

Their attacks collided.

BOOOOM!

Snow blasted upward.

The ground cracked beneath them.

Kael was thrown back several meters, rolling once before stopping.

The wolf slid back too—its front paw bent at an odd angle.

Nathan’s eyes widened.

(He matched that monster... with his bare fist?)

Kael exhaled, stood up, and stretched his wrist.

"...Ow."

"’Ow’ he says," Nathan muttered. "I swear you’re not human."

The direwolf limped, snarling.

Its breath grew colder.

Nathan’s face darkened. "It’s going berserk...."

He slammed his hands together, two magic circles spinning around him.

"Kael! Either we finish it now or we freeze!"

Kael lifted his sword.

"Okay."

Nathan groaned. "Why do you sound so calm!?"

But Kael stepped forward.

The direwolf’s breath reached a deadly low temperature—frost forming on the tips of Kael’s hair.

Its pupils dilated.

Then—

WHOOSH!!!

It vanished.

Appeared right in front of Kael.

Fangs open.

Nathan screamed, "KAEL! DODGE—!"

Too close.

Kael’s eyes widened slightly.

His sword glowed.

A giant figure manifested behind him—shadowy, muscular, holding an enormous spectral blade.

Nathan froze.

(Wh–What is THAT!?)

Kael whispered the words—

"Sword Art: Dark Edge."

The giant raised its massive sword.

Kael swung his own.

KAAAAA-THOOOOOOM!!!

A black arc of energy burst forward—so heavy, so massive the air bent.

The direwolf’s eyes widened—

SHRRAAAASH!!!

The technique sliced across its shoulder, ripping through flesh and icy armor.

Blood exploded like a red fountain.

The wolf shrieked.

Every student in the beast field stopped and stared.

Even Nathan stood frozen.

"That... wasn’t normal swordsmanship."

Kael exhaled, the shadowy figure behind him fading into mist.

He lowered his sword.

"...I think it worked," he muttered.

But the fight wasn’t over.

The direwolf, enraged and injured, rose again—shaking violently, ice spreading across its body as it prepared its strongest attack.

Nathan’s expression sharpened.

His aura surged.

"Kael... we finish this. Together."

Kael nodded.

The wolf lunged—faster, more desperate.

Nathan leapt forward too.

Kael sprinted.

The direwolf slammed a claw toward Nathan—ice spikes forming on impact.

Kael intercepted with a powerful swing.

CLANG!

The force knocked him back, but Nathan managed to charge his next spell.

"Kael! Hold it for FIVE SECONDS!"

"Five seconds?!" Kael yelled.

The direwolf lunged at him, teeth snapping.

Kael blocked with his sword.

The ground cracked beneath him.

"Four seconds!" Nathan shouted.

Kael ducked under another bite.

"Three!"

The wolf swiped—Kael rolled, sliced upward, then punched its jaw.

"Two!"

The beast roared and slammed Kael onto the ground—

WHAM!!!

The breath was knocked out of him.

"One!"

Nathan’s body glowed violently.

Wind circled him like a hurricane.

"GALE–BURST: TEMPEST ASCENSION!!!"

A massive spear of compressed wind blasted toward the wolf.

Kael—half-pinned under the beast—moved his arm.

He whispered—

"...Astral Punch."

A white explosion blasted upward.

BOOOOOOM!!!

Both attacks collided into the direwolf.

The creature screamed, body flung into the air, spinning violently before crashing through three frozen trees.

Snowflakes drifted down.

Kael pushed himself up from the ground, coughing out a puff of frost.

"...That hurt."

Nathan was gasping, sweating like mad.

"That... should’ve killed it, right?"

Kael looked toward the fallen beast.

The Frostfang Direwolf twitched.

Nathan’s jaw dropped.

"NO. WAY."

"Let’s finish it," Kael said.

They started walking toward it—

But suddenly—

FWOOOOOOM!!!

An overwhelming aura burst onto the field.

Nathan froze.

Kael halted.

From the sky, streaks of light descended—

Professors.

Principal Alric landed in front.

His gaze swept over the icy battlefield.

And then—

His eyes fell on Kael.

More specifically—

The lingering shadowy aura of Dark Edge.

The principal’s face stiffened.

"Kael Ashford..." he whispered. "What... what did I just witness?"

Professor Sylvia landed behind him, eyes wide.

"That technique—Kael—where did you learn—"

Before she could finish—

GRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAARH!!!

The Frostfang Direwolf rose again.

A cold wind swept across the field.

Principal Alric descended from above like a shadow falling from the sun, his long coat fluttering.

He raised his right hand.

A dense wave of mana—deep blue and violent—burst outward.

THUUMMM!!

The Frostfang Direwolf, which was still struggling against the combined force of Kael and Nathan moments ago, immediately collapsed.

Its body slammed against the ground as if gravity had multiplied tenfold.

"Stay," Principal Alric commanded.

The monster whimpered, its icy fangs clattering helplessly.

Nathan stepped back, panting hard.

Kael lowered his arm.

The students watched with awe.

The principal flicked his finger, and chains of pure mana wrapped around the beast—neck, legs, tail—until it could not move an inch.

"Take it back to the cage," Alric ordered calmly.

Two high-ranking beast handlers rushed in, trembling as they dragged the subdued Direwolf away. Even subdued, the creature’s breath froze the soil beneath it.

As soon as the beast disappeared behind the iron gate, the principal’s expression shifted from calm to ice-cold anger.

His eyes swept the field.

"Which idiot... released the Frostfang Direwolf?"

Silence.

Not one student dared breathe.

Even Nathan straightened unconsciously.

Alric’s voice lowered. "This level of recklessness could have killed dozens. I want the name of the culprit immediately."

No one spoke.

Not because they were protecting Kaigaku—no.

They were simply too terrified to guess.

Kael clenched his fists. Someone did this... knowing students were inside.

But the principal saw no answers on the students’ faces, so he exhaled sharply.

"Fine."

He turned toward the teachers.

His voice hardened.

"Professor Sylvia."

Sylvia stiffened. "Y-Yes, Principal?"

"You are the class teacher of the first years, are you not?"

"Yes, sir."

"Then why...—"

"—did you allow first years to enter the Beast Fence?"

Sylvia froze.

Her throat tightened.

"I... I was told they had permission to visit the outer section."

"And who told you that?" the principal asked.

Sylvia opened her mouth—

—but no answer came.

Because no one had told her.

She simply could not justify it.
