Chapter 39: A lesson in success.

Elias thought she was joking. But suddenly, Sienna let out a loud, exaggerated "HA! HA! HA!" that startled the servants and young ones.

Someone dropped a fork. Someone spilled wine.

Guards froze and turned to look at their lord and lady, with concerned eyes. They were not sure if this was related to the movie, or a new kind of unknown attack from an enemy they had never met.

Elias arched a brow, his voice smooth and chilly. "Sienna. What...are you doing?"

"I’m teaching you," she declared, wagging her finger like a school principal or governess educating a little one on etiquette.

Ali certainly thought so because that was how her grandmother acted when she was teaching her to talk and act in high society. She hated those lessons and she was glad that was not eating with mama and papa.

Sienna cleared her throat again, "Lesson one: laughter is not a crime or a cause for embarrassment. Observe." She threw her head back and let out a wheezy snort, followed by a hiccuping giggle that sounded like a goose choking on bread.

The servants exchanged horrified glances. The guards tried not to laugh at her instead of the movie they were watching.

"Lady Cadelaria would die if she was here right now," The oldest nanny, a fox beast woman called Ardine commented.

"Lady Sienna would be in a rug already." Nanny Fortunate added.

Three younger maids said, "ROLL!" and burst into giggles.

Elias’s lips twitched. He scoffed, covering it with a sip of wine. "You sound like a broken battle ship."

Sienna leaned even closer, eyes sparkling. "And yet, you are hiding a smile. Admit it. The mighty cold fox lord is amused."

He shook his head, but his shoulders betrayed him with the tiniest shake. Sienna doubled down, mimicking some of the exaggerated faces she had seen the beast women making in the movie. Then she clutched her stomach and let out a booming "BWAHAHAHAHA!" so theatrical that everyone lost composure.

Finally, despite himself, a sound escaped Elias--a low, reluctant chuckle, sharp as a crack in ice.

Sienna gasped dramatically. "He laughed," she screamed, "Did you hear that? A laugh! Hey Ali, your dad laughed. Everyone, your lord laughed. Did you hear that?"

"Clap." Timothy hissed at them.

The servants and guards clapped nervously, unsure if this was a triumph or treason. Some of Elias’s closest guards cheered like a battle had been won. Ali jumped up and down, stepping on Soren’s foot!

Elias sighed, rubbing his temple, but the corner of his mouth betrayed him again. She was relentless in her own way, just like his mother. He leaned back in the chair with a sigh. He couldn’t help wondering if the peace and laughter here was how they should have lived when they were together on his estate.

His mind could also not help but think of his mother and how she would lose her fur if she saw them dining out in the open like this.

Lady Cadelaria’s opinion on outdoor dining was simple: we left the woods five centuries ago, I will be damned if I eat outside ever again!

Five centuries ago, beast men were still living in forests, sleeping in small stone houses and caves.

"Should I try again, or has the lesson been learned?" She asked him.

"Truly, you are tenacious." He muttered. "The lesson has been learned. Now, we should talk about the real reason why I came. The king and queen invited us for tea."

She groaned and rolled her eyes to the sky. "Aargh, again! The last time I went, the queen wanted to discuss very private topics. You are on your own, make up an excuse for me."

It was Elias’s turn to wag his finger. "No can do Lady Veythar, you are the reason why we are being summoned. I am a victim of your mouth. The king claims that lady mouse was on a random shopping trip and someone called her a mouse bitch. So, she is suing us before the king. To what end, I am not sure."

Sienna decided to just go ahead and drink the wine. "I just clarified everything on my livestream. I even apologized to all mouse beast men. Isn’t that enough?"

Elias shook his head. "Not by far. My guess is that I will have to make some financial compensation in the form of a trade deal. Have your servants buy some nice dresses, shoes, bracelets...things women like. The expensive kind. Lady mouse loves to shine so she will appreciate that. Lastly, please be polite when you address them. I don’t want to start a war because I am too busy to oversee one." 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

Sienna nodded. All that sounded easy enough. "So what time are we leaving?"

"Same time as the last, at around 10 AM." He narrowed his eyes at her. "Do not wear that mouse bitch shirt you purchased Sienna." His eyes flashed her an impatient warning.

On the other hand, she was shocked to hear how he knew about her purchase. "Who told on me?"

"The notification I get whenever you purchase something. Have you forgotten that I am a co-signer on your bank account?" He asked.

Sienna winced. She had forgotten about that indeed. All humans married to beast men or women needed to have their beast partner co-sign the paperwork for almost everything, including bank accounts.

In her case, it had to be done even more because Elias was making regular deposits into the account. Also he was the fox lord, with control over the finances of the general fox tribe accounts. Transparency was expected for his and Sienna’s accounts to prevent corruption.

"I think it’s not fair that you get to keep track of my expenditures." She muttered with dissatisfaction. "Not just my case but the cases of all beast man and human marriages. Where is my privacy?"

"You flushed it down the toilet when you agreed to marry me." He replied, his lips curved upwards in a smile.

"Tch!" She muttered, rolling her eyes.

Elias snorted. "Just re-open your old account with a bank that specifically caters to humans. Everyone is allowed to have two bank accounts. When I deposit money in this account, you move it to the private one. Problem solved."

Sienna planned to do this as soon as possible.

He rose, looking ready to leave.

An idea crossed her mind, to test the command waters. She had not used ’stay’ on Elias before. "Stay." she shouted, holding her hand out.
