Chapter 32: Mother of all tantrums.

Determined to stop her son from making a decision she considered inappropriate and insane, Lady Cadelaria blurted, "how about for my sake? I have a weak heart too, like Sienna’s mother. It will be attacked if Sienna takes my granddaughter."

Elias arched his brows. A beast man with a weak heart! "Really, mother!" he exclaimed.

Lady Cadelaria blinked and tipped her chin forward. She intended to double down. "I could have a weak heart. You are not my doctor, you don’t know about my health."

From the sidelines, where he was trying to blend into the wall, Timothy muttered, "Actually he does." Elias made sure his parents got full physical health checks every month. Besides, unlike Sienna’s mother who was small, pale, coughing and obviously fragile, Lady Cadelaria was the picture of perfect health.

But this did not stop her from trying to act sickly. She put a hand over the right side of her chest and coughed twice more.

Elias was not the kind of man that rolled his eyes. But he did! "You are being ridiculous mother and the heart is on the left."

Lady Cadelaria moved her hand to the left side, over heart and she coughed again. She blinked hopefully, looking up to Elias in the hopes that he would buy a ruse which was so obvious.

Timothy could not help it, he burst into laughter. Other servants and guards did the same.

And then, things took an even more dramatic turn. The ever noble Lady Cadelaria plopped down on the ground dramatically. Her two tails fanned out like a barricade of fluffy banners. "I don’t care what you say or do Elias, my granddaughter is not leaving," she shrieked. "Over my tails, Elias! Over my tails!"

Elias was flabbergasted, having never seen anything like this. "For the love of the beast god, mother you are embarrassing yourself." He pinched the bridge of his nose. "Besides, I have a meeting with an envoy from the mer tribe to deal with the rising sea piracy problem. This is not the time."

"This is exactly the time!" Lady Cadelaria wailed, rolling onto her side. "Do you know what happens to children that grow up without their grandmother’s influence?"

"Isn’t this the same thing Sienna said about children growing up with one absent parent?" Elias retorted. "Ali cannot grow up without her mother."

"But who will feed my grand baby sausage rolls with butter? Sienna will feed her nothing but vegetables." Lady Cadelaria shuddered. "Have you thought about what would happen if Sienna remarries from another species? Maybe...a wolf...or god forbid a deer! We can’t have a deer raising a fox. What if, under Sienna’s influence, Ali grows up to marry a deer or wolf?"

Elias touched his chin. "Well, Ali did howl recently."

Lady Cadelaria gasped.

Sienna, walked up to them, one of Ali’s hands in hers. The little one had already changed into a travel thought. "I could always marry a sheep beast man. Ali as well. They are cute and docile, very teachable." Sienna suggested.

Lady Cadelaria gasped again. "They are!" she snapped. "They are obedient followers with no appreciation for proper tea ceremonies. My granddaughter will not be raised among them or marry one of them."

Elias sighed. "Mother, Ali is not marrying anyone. She’s five."

"Five is practically betrothal age in fox years!" Lady Cadelaria declared, reaching out to grab Ali. Sienna gave up her hold, allowing the little one to be hugged tightly by her grandmother. "When I was five, I had three suitors and a dowry that could fit in the beast king’s palace. There were ten golden feathers in that lot!"

Ali wriggled free and clapped her hands. "Grandma, can I have golden feathers too?"

Yes, darling, yes!" Lady Cadelaria cooed. "I shall visit the phoenix tribe myself and pluck them for you."

Sienna rolled her eyes. "This is absurd. Elias, control your mother."

"I have been trying all my life," Elias muttered. "It hasn’t worked." He cleared his throat, "Mother, throwing a tantrum is not going to help and it is not going to stop what is going to happen. Stop polishing the floor with your tails and ..."

"I won’t." Lady Cadelaria stubbornly declared. "If you take her," she cried, "I shall waste away! I shall shrivel like an autumn leaf. My fur will lose its shine and fall away."

Sienna looked at the time. This tantrum was delaying her affairs. An idea sprung forth, making her smile slyly, "Mother-in-law, I have a suggestion. One that will fix all this."

Lady Cadelaria lit up.

"You should have another baby." Sienna suggested.

There were more gasps in the hallway than ever before. Feather dusters were dropped, mops were broken, phones cracked!

Elias and his mother looked at Sienna as if she had suddenly morphed into a beast woman. At the back, Cyra and Gael nearly fainted. Their mother was too old to have a baby!

Sienna simply added, "Think about it, if you have your own baby, they will not leave. You will have a little one to pamper and I will have my daughter to educate appropriately."

Lady Cadelaria huffed. "You must be out of your mind. And, how dare you accuse me of spoiling Ali! Guards, roll her out."

Sienna raised the pan immediately, her eyes flashing a warning. "This is why I cannot live here with you. The disrespect is simply too much to take. It is like you are working overtime to put me in my place. I need to raise my children in my own home, not yours."

Elias stepped in, attempting diplomacy. "Guards, stay away. Nobody should touch my wife ever again." He looked at his mother. "Mother, listen, Sienna and I...we are just coming to an understanding. Our separation is inevitable. Ali and Eli must have time with their mother. It’s only proper."

"Proper?" Lady Cadelaria scoffed. "Proper is overrated. Was it proper when Cyra ran off with that male racoon dancer at the age of 19? No! You all told me to give her time to realize her mistakes but I tracked her down and brought her back here. Now look at her, she is an obedient, rational woman."

Sienna turned to Cyra. The young woman was greatly embarrassed. "Racoon dancer!" she mouthed.

Cyra groaned.

The servants laughed.

"Liman," Elias called out. "Respectfully, escort my mother away from here."

Lady Cadelaria sat up, tails bristling. She held up her hand, stopping Liman in her steps. With a more serious look in her eyes, she asked her son, "Are you really determined to do this? To betray me?"

Elias pursed his lips. How was this a betrayal?
