Transmigrated Genius: Fragile Heiress Reigns Supreme-Chapter 578 - 580: Diverging Paths (5)
Madam Jiang looked at Xiqiu and awkwardly smiled, while Nanny Qiu followed behind and lifted the curtain to let them in.
As soon as they entered, a stale and sour smell hit their noses. Xiqiu furrowed her brow and looked toward the bed; there she saw Lady lying rigidly in an overcoat of dark golden silk with floral embroidery. Her left hand’s fingers were bent in a peculiar position, and the corner of her mouth drooped, causing saliva to trickle out, which Nanny Fang naturally wiped away with a handkerchief.
It had only been such a short time, yet Lady had changed so drastically that she found it hard to comprehend. The stark contrast to her previous dignified elegance was difficult to accept. Even when ill before, she did not have such a crooked mouth and eyes, and now she was truly a stroke victim. Even Nanny Fang was unrecognizable; the once bustling and meticulously styled Nanny Fang now had silver strands across her temples and a face lined with wrinkles, resembling an old woman!
Both Lady and Nanny Fang were only in their thirties.
She stepped forward and kneeled respectfully to Lady, softly calling near the bed, "Mother!"
Only then did Lady notice her arrival, turning her face with difficulty, her murky gaze burning onto her.
Nanny Fang bowed to Xiqiu from the side, greeting, "Sixth Lady." Xiqiu nodded slightly in response. Inside the room, a young unfamiliar maid brought a chair for Xiqiu, who then sat down in front of Lady’s bed.
Lady’s gaze roamed over Xiqiu’s face, observing her rosy complexion and light brows, indicating she had been living well. She recalled the scene when Tong Xihua visited her parents’ home; within just a year or two, things had truly changed.
"Wuwuwu..." Lady looked at Xiqiu and began to weep softly.
Unable to understand, Xiqiu glanced at Nanny Fang, who explained, "Lady is asking Sixth Lady, how is Young Master Xin now?"
"Mother, Xing is doing fine now; he’s in the Grand Dowager’s room, chatting and laughing. In a few days, he’ll be able to run and jump like before!" Hearing this, Lady repeatedly tapped her finger on the bedboard, clearly dissatisfied with Xiqiu’s answer.
Nanny Fang straightened and explained, "Lady means Young Master Xin is so young and has suffered so much already. How could he possibly be okay? Has an Imperial Physician been consulted thoroughly?" She paused and then continued, "How could Sixth Lady be so careless to let someone poison the food?"
Before Xiqiu could react, Madam Jiang could not sit still any longer. She feared Xiqiu would become upset and immediately tried to mediate with a smile, "The Master will be back soon. Would Sixth Lady like to come to my place first..." Before she could finish, Lady’s gaze was already piercing through her like arrows.
Madam Jiang had to stop speaking.
Xiqiu looked at Madam Jiang to reassure her, then replied to Lady, "You can’t always predict everything; this time it was just an accident." She gave no further explanation: "Besides, the person who poisoned has already been punished. Mother needn’t worry anymore."
After speaking, she glanced at Lady meaningfully.
Neither soft nor hard, she pushed back.
The atmosphere tensed up.
Upon hearing this, Lady’s face turned cold; Xiqiu was clearly alluding to Qiuping’s foolish act!
She glared in anger, and Madam Jiang, seeing this, feared Lady would blurt out more unpleasant words. Sixth Lady was no longer the Sixth Miss who resided in the mansion; she was now the Madam of the Great Governor. Did Lady still think she could control her as before?
"Since the person who poisoned has been punished, there’s no need to worry anymore. Sixth Lady has truly worked hard this time." She reminded Lady that Xing’s safety this time was thanks to Sixth Lady, and if Sixth Lady truly bore a grudge and didn’t care for Xing, there wouldn’t be anyone to rely on in the Marquis Mansion in the future.
Lady paused in thought, glanced at Madam Jiang, and Nanny Fang stepped forward to block Xiqiu’s line of sight and gently wiped Lady’s mouth. When Nanny Fang stepped aside, Lady’s expression had already returned to normal.
The atmosphere instantly relaxed again, and Lady glanced at Nanny Fang, who said, "Sixth Lady is family, so I speak openly without fear of you taking offense. The matter with Qiuping was indeed at Lady’s behest, but we didn’t expect it would result in Xing being poisoned. However... we dare not say much; Qiuping has always been reliable, no matter how foolish she may be, she couldn’t possibly intend to harm Xing. So, someone must have plotted this. We implore Sixth Lady to investigate further."
Nanny Fang observed Xiqiu’s reaction and continued, "If there’s someone else responsible for the poisoning, Young Master Xin would still be in danger. Sixth Lady is staying in the mansion and being Xing’s aunt, we kindly ask you to dedicate more attention."
It seemed Lady knew Qiuping was not the one who poisoned, but she wasn’t aware of the incident involving the Second Madam the previous night... Lady’s attitude had overturned, and Nanny Fang’s tone took on more humility.
Just then, a maid brought in tea. Xiqiu took a sip, her expression calm, and said, "I am Xing’s Fourth Aunt, naturally, I won’t ignore her. Rest assured, Mother, I will do my utmost."
While she said Fourth Aunt, she refrained from mentioning Sixth Aunt, implying she’d do her best, though her face remained indifferent.
Lady and Nanny Fang naturally didn’t believe her. Nanny Fang grew even more anxious; with Xing in the Marquis Mansion, even if Lady had long reach, she was powerless. Previously, there was Qiuping to protect him, which helped somewhat; now, even Qiuping was gone, and begrudgingly, they had only the Sixth Lady to rely on.
But what if she doesn’t care for Xing...
Nanny Fang softened her tone: "Sixth Lady, you are a daughter of the Tong Family, having grown up around us and are known for your kind heart. Young Master Xin, whether as your niece or nephew, is like your own child. Now, as family, we shouldn’t shy away from speaking plainly. The Second Madam is pregnant, and Young Master Xin benefited from his misfortune, having been crowned Princely Heir. The Second Madam must see him as a thorn in her side. This time Young Master Xin survived safely, but who can ensure his safety tomorrow or the day after? The Grand Dowager is advanced in age and cannot always protect him. At present, only Sixth Lady and Sixth Son-in-law have the capability to protect him!"
Xiqiu lowered her head to sip tea, contemplating whether to inform Lady about the Second Madam to prevent her from worrying excessively.
However, her expression was indifferent, appearing uninterested in the eyes of Lady and Nanny Fang. Lady struggled to clench her fists but lacked the strength to hold on, so she gradually relaxed. Nanny Fang’s face turned ashen; she looked between Lady and Xiqiu, gritting her teeth...
She bowed her head and knelt before Xiqiu!
