Transmigrated as Cannon Fodder — I Rise to Female Lead Through Hard Work-Chapter 62: May Day Plan
"Big brother, sister-in-law, and Anmin saved someone on the mountain a few days ago, and they gave us a deer, and also quite a few wild chickens," Ding Anguo said quietly as he walked alongside Ding Ancheng, sharing all the family’s recent happenings.
Yi Roujing watched from behind, not expecting that the Ding Family’s messenger was Ding Anguo.
"Big brother, how’s the training? Did you go to the provincial city for training? How’s the provincial city? I wonder if the bicycles there are better than the ones in the county? Big brother, we’re planning to buy a bicycle this time we visit," Ding Anguo fired off a string of questions like a curious child, finally leading up to what thrilled him the most at the moment.
"Sister-in-law said we should buy a ladies’ bike, and she said I could ride it, too. It’ll be convenient to go to the commune to shop, get there earlier than others, buy good stuff, and moreover..."
"Second brother, that’s enough," Ding Anmin couldn’t take it anymore; once he started talking about something he was excited about, he couldn’t stop, "Big brother, how’s the provincial city?"
Ding Anmin was more curious about the provincial city, having heard that cars with four wheels were everywhere, though that was an exaggeration.
Yi Roujing perked up her ears in curiosity upon hearing about the provincial city, and Ding Ancheng found it amusing.
"The training was a day and a half, and aside from being at the school, I almost didn’t go out, so as for how the provincial city is, I’ll take you guys there next time to see," Ding Ancheng said, though it wasn’t his first time in the provincial city, hearing about it from others doesn’t quite compare to seeing it with your own eyes.
"How about we go to the provincial city during May Day?" Ding Ancheng was not someone to make empty promises.
Yi Roujing’s eyes lit up immediately, meeting Ding Ancheng’s gaze.
"Yeah, yeah," Ding Anmin and Ding Anguo were so excited they grabbed an arm each of their big brother, even though the look was towards Yi Roujing, but it didn’t matter as long as they got to go to the provincial city.
"Sister-in-law, what do you think?"
Yi Roujing was a bit dizzy from being stared at by Ding Ancheng, not getting a chance to respond before Ding Anmin pursued an answer eagerly, and she nodded her head.
"Big brother—" Ding Anmin smiled with such joy that his eyes curved.
"Alright, we’ll set off on May Day and be back by the fifth," decided Ding Ancheng right then and there, "Oh, and I brought you gifts from the provincial city."
Ding Ancheng’s words made the trip to the employee’s dormitory feel like it took only three minutes.
Though it was the County First Middle School’s employee dormitory, they were all single-story residences, lined up one after the other with no courtyard, and the stoves were placed outside.
Ding Ancheng lived in the middle; he unlocked the door with a key, and the inside was plain to see with no fancy decor or furniture, just two beds, a square table, two stools, and a wardrobe.
Oh, there was also a little stove in the corner, with cutting boards, knives, and tableware, but judging by the quantity, it was meant for two people.
"I’ll go to the cafeteria to get food, we’ll have lunch here; the teacher I share with happened to take leave today," Ding Ancheng said, pulling out a box from under the bed that contained dusty bowls, chopsticks, and lunch boxes.
"Let’s just eat at the cafeteria; we won’t have to wash dishes afterward," Yi Roujing suggested, feeling a headache looking at all the dishes and bowls. She wasn’t fond of housework — not that she couldn’t do it — but she particularly disliked washing dishes.
Thinking of it this way, her in-laws were really indulgent with her; she never had to cook, and washing dishes was always done by Li Hongying and Ding Anmin in turns.
Ding Ancheng put the box back in place and nodded.
"What about the deer meat?" Ding Anmin gestured toward the basket with a slight frown, "It needs to be eaten within two days, or it won’t be fresh anymore."
"No worries, we’ll stew a pot tonight and share it with colleagues, it’ll be gone in no time," Ding Ancheng replied.
"Alright," Ding Anmin agreed, feeling generous, probably because there was plenty of deer meat at home.
The group of four headed to the cafeteria of County First Middle School. The space was quite large, with as many as eight windows for getting food: meat dishes, vegetable dishes, pasta, and rice, split between two areas to speed up flow for teachers and students. Though not many dishes were available, there were enough to choose from.
Ding Ancheng took Yi Roujing to get food and let Ding Anguo and Ding Anmin hold a spot, ordering braised pork, stir-fried bean sprouts with dried tofu, and sautéed lettuce, along with a bowl of egg drop soup, opting for rice as the main dish.
"Teacher Ding, is that your sister?" Many greeted Ding Ancheng as he carried the meal tray with Yi Roujing holding the bowls of rice, intrigued by the same question: her identity.
"That’s Teacher Ding’s wife," said immediately by quite a few who recognized Yi Roujing, knowing her as his spouse.
"Roujing—"
A bright shout suddenly echoed in the spacious cafeteria, made by Wang Bingzhi, the guidance counselor at County First Middle School.
"Mr. Wang," Yi Roujing greeted with a smile.
"Let’s have lunch together," Wang Bingzhi suggested as he fetched his meal tray, having gathered four different dishes than what the others had, and they all sat at a large table for five.
"Is this your brother, Ancheng? He looks a bit more like Anmin," Wang Bingzhi remarked, having seen both Yi Roujing and Ding Anmin before, but meeting Ding Anguo for the first time.
"Hello, Mr. Wang," Ding Anguo followed Yi Roujing’s lead, grinning, "I’m Ding Anguo, the twin brother of Ding Anmin."
"Great, your family has good looks," Wang Bingzhi praised with a warm smile, no wonder — turns out they were twins. Still, Ding Ancheng was the more handsome one, and Yi Roujing did stand out as the wife.
"Roujing, the couple’s room Ancheng applied for should be ready in a few months, after this summer break," said Wang Bingzhi, handling it personally to ensure the progress; otherwise, others might queue up for ages.
This was mainly due to Ding Ancheng’s exceptional performance, leading County First Middle School to achieve a good result in the provincial math competition, giving him an edge that was hard to argue against.
"Thank you, Mr. Wang," Yi Roujing replied with a polite smile, though she didn’t actually care much in her heart. Now, as it was brought up, she felt a tad embarrassed.
At this moment, Yi Roujing’s ears turned red, which Ding Ancheng, sitting beside her, noticed, and his smile widened as he continued eating.
Throughout the meal, Wang Bingzhi chatted enthusiastically, "Heping’s been mentioning you a lot; every time she calls, she asks about you. How about calling her back from my office?"
Yi Roujing thought for a moment and nodded, "Sure, we’re planning to visit the provincial city this May Day; if it’s convenient, I can see Sister Heping in person."
After lunch, Yi Roujing went with Wang Bingzhi to his office while Ding Anguo and Ding Anmin followed Ding Ancheng back to the dormitory.
Provincial city Jiangcheng, provincial government compound.
Hu Heping had a due date in June, about two months away, but her already large belly made movement slower now.
Hao Zhijian wasn’t home, and she was staying at her maternal family, with Hao Zhixin living together at the Hu Family’s house.
"Ring, ring—"
Hao Zhixin, sitting by the phone, casually picked it up, "Hello."
