Transmigrated as Cannon Fodder — I Rise to Female Lead Through Hard Work-Chapter 43: Sensible and Understanding
After eating the creamy candy and feeling happy, Jie felt a bit regretful, "Sister Roujing, could you give me the candy wrapper?"
"I threw it away." Yi Roujing asked, "Want to collect candy wrappers?"
"I wanted to wrap the leftover and give it to my mom." Jie said earnestly, the candy in his mouth hadn’t even melted much yet.
Yi Roujing smiled and ruffled his hair, then took out another piece, "Here, this one is for Aunt Bai Wei."
"I’ve already eaten one, taking another isn’t right." Jie said seriously, "My mom would scold me if she knew."
"Aunt Bai Wei saved my life, what’s a candy compared to that?" Yi Roujing placed it into Jie’s hand, "Take it, if your mom says anything, just tell her it’s from me."
"Oh." Jie nodded, then beamed and carefully hid the candy, "Thank you, Sister Roujing."
...
"Jie, why are you the one herding the cattle and sheep? Hey, where’s Anmin? Why is Ancheng’s wife here and she’s not?"
The three who were busy cutting grass looked up. Ding Xiaojing, dressed in a black Lenin suit and holding a notebook, was approaching.
"She went to the bathroom." Yi Roujing replied and continued working.
"How long has she been gone?" Ding Xiaojing frowned.
Yi Roujing smiled, "Just as she left, Sister Xiaojing, you’re here right after her. Want to look for her?"
"What about the rightist?" Ding Xiaojing asked Jie.
"Mr. Qi had a stomachache, he’ll be back soon after the bathroom." Jie replied blankly.
"So many issues." Ding Xiaojing said irritably, "Tell him when he returns that from tomorrow, he’ll cut pigweed, and you’ll do the cattle herding, Yi Roujing."
"Oh." Yi Roujing nodded.
Ding Xiaojing didn’t leave, she kept watching Yi Roujing, who sensed it and looked up, their eyes met, Ding Xiaojing’s eyes were complicated, with curiosity and a fleeting jealousy.
"Anything else, Sister Xiaojing?" Yi Roujing stood up, taller than Ding Xiaojing by almost half a head.
"Nothing." Ding Xiaojing frowned slightly, glanced at Yi Roujing again, and then turned away.
"A woman’s heart is like diving for a needle at the bottom of the sea." Yi Roujing remarked.
Xia Xingchen glanced at Yi Roujing, wanting to speak but hesitated.
"If you know something, just say it. Don’t hold it in." Yi Roujing glanced at Xia Xingchen. Their face clearly said: I know why Ding Xiaojing treats you this way.
"I heard, Sister Xiaojing likes Ding Ancheng." Xia Xingchen leaned closer and whispered. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
"No wonder." Yi Roujing suddenly understood.
"Aren’t you angry?"
"Why get angry?" Yi Roujing didn’t quite understand, "Feelings aren’t something one can control; who you like or don’t is your own choice. Besides, Ding Ancheng, being the desirable one, it’s not just Ding Xiaojing who likes him."
"Last time when we went to Huaixi County, we came across some teachers from their school, and one female teacher is among them too."
"Aren’t you jealous?" Xia Xingchen was a bit surprised.
"They haven’t done anything, what am I supposed to be jealous of?" Yi Roujing laughed, "Plus, Ding Ancheng doesn’t like them; even if he did, it wouldn’t be to my disadvantage, right?"
Xia Xingchen gave a thumbs up, "Sis, there are rumors in the team saying you’re clueless. Next time I hear it, I’ll be the first to argue with them."
"Thanks a lot."
...
"Mr. Qi struggles to herd cattle in that condition, let alone cut pigweed..." Little Douding Ding Quanjie expressed concern.
"No worries, we’ll still let Mr. Qi herd the cattle when it’s time to work." Yi Roujing said indifferently.
"Then won’t Sister Roujing be at a loss?" Jie remarked.
"Enduring loss means gaining." Yi Roujing replied, "Besides, isn’t it about helping others?"
Below the slope is a small pond, the same place where Yi Roujing previously found pearls, oh, and also river clams and yellow eels.
Yellow eel is a good thing for nourishment, both of the people by her side need it, and so does Mr. Qi in the cattle shed. With this in mind, Yi Roujing put down her basket and sickle, took off her shoes and socks, rolled up her pants, and went into the pond.
"Hey, hey, sis, you..."
Yi Roujing turned around and pressed her index finger to her lips, and Xia Xingchen instantly fell silent.
Actually, the best time to catch yellow eels is at night, but Yi Roujing, thinking of her unusual luck, decided to give it a try, just to test it once more.
The water near the shore was murky, totally unclear, but ever since she stood still, two yellow eels had already brushed past her calves, making Yi Roujing’s mouth twitch; she felt a bit embarrassed.
Yi Roujing bent down, hands in the water, and soon grabbed a slippery yellow eel, flipping it up onto the bank.
On the bank, Xia Xingchen and Jie, dumbfounded, finally reacted after the second yellow eel appeared, each grabbing one and placing them into the basket Yi Roujing brought with wild vegetables.
Yi Roujing moved to another spot and caught three more before stopping, thinking being too good was not ideal.
Back on the bank, Jie obediently handed over a few large leaves, "Sister Roujing, wipe with these."
Oh, such cleverness! Yi Roujing laughed and cleaned up before putting on her shoes and socks again, "Xingchen, come to my house for dinner tonight. Jie, take these two home and have Aunt Bai Wei make soup to nourish you."
In Jie’s eyes, the hesitation faded after meeting Yi Roujing’s smiling gaze, "Thank you, Sister Roujing."
"Good boy." Yi Roujing ruffled Jie’s hair, and then they all went home.
Throughout, Xia Xingchen watched Yi Roujing in awe, "Sis, how are you so good at catching yellow eels?"
"I’m capable."
"But I see those making do with lamps at night on the team aren’t as good as you."
"How can they compare to me?" Yi Roujing said disdainfully, jokingly implying that she had a special favor from the heavens and therefore was particularly blessed.
Li Hongying was now used to their household occasionally having some game, and when she saw the yellow eel, she promptly prepared it.
"I’ll take one to Mr. Qi later. Oh, and I already brought a quilt over today." Yi Roujing told Li Hongying.
Li Hongying lightly frowned and then nodded, "Let Anguo bring it over later. By the way, where is Anmin?"
"Oh, Anmin is now with Mr. Qi." Yi Roujing replied, "How about I and Anguo go over together later?"
"Okay, just try to avoid being seen." Li Hongying instructed.
Yi Roujing was a bit surprised by Li Hongying’s attitude, initially thinking she would oppose them associating with Mr. Qi.
Yi Roujing didn’t leave, and Li Hongying understood her thoughts, sighing, "They’re pitiful people. If it doesn’t burden us, help where you can."
Yi Roujing nodded, then took the specially prepared yellow eels, added some ginger and salt to marinate them, scooped a bowl of white rice, and informed Li Hongying before calling on Ding Anguo to go to the cattle shed together.
