Touchline Rebirth: From Game To Glory-Chapter 228: After the Match
Chapter 228: After the Match
December 13th, 2010
As the noise in the stadium slowly settled, both teams began the familiar post-match routine. Crawley’s players walked across the pitch, offering handshakes and brief words to their Brighton counterparts.
"Good match," Max said, shaking hands with Brighton’s captain.
"You pushed us hard," the Brighton player replied with a respectful nod. "That equalizer was a great finish."
Dev exchanged a quick handshake with the defender who had marked him for most of the game. Both gave a tired smile, the kind shared between players who had battled each other for ninety intense minutes.
Kieron and Nate spoke briefly with Brighton’s midfielders, acknowledging the tough contest. Ellis patted one of their wingers on the shoulder after a quick handshake.
Even Liam and Harry, still catching their breath, exchanged respectful nods with Brighton’s attackers they had spent the match battling in the air.
Nearby, the coaches met as well.
Niels walked toward Brighton’s manager with a calm expression and extended his hand.
"Good game," Niels said. "Your team made it very difficult for us today."
The Brighton coach shook his hand firmly. "Likewise. Your side showed real discipline. That was a strong response after going behind."
They shared a brief nod of professional respect before turning back toward their teams.
For Crawley, the job wasn’t finished yet. The players began making their way toward the tunnel, still discussing moments from the match as the Brighton crowd slowly applauded both teams off the pitch.
The Crawley players slowly filed into the dressing room, the adrenaline from the match was still fading, replaced by the heavy exhaustion of ninety intense minutes.
Some players dropped onto the benches immediately. Others grabbed water bottles, taking long drinks while replaying moments of the match in their heads.
Max sat down in the center of the room, unlacing his boots. "That was intense," he said with a tired smile. "But we stuck together."
Dev nodded from across the room. "Their press was intense in the first half. Took us a while to find space."
Kieron leaned back against the lockers. "Second half was better though. Once Nate and Ellis settled in, we kept our shape."
Nate shrugged modestly. "Just tried to do what the coach said, keep the midfield tight."
Across the room, Reece sat on the medical bench with his ankle wrapped in ice. Thomas checked the bandage again while Reece watched his teammates.
"Still worth it?" Ellis asked him with a small grin.
Reece chuckled despite the discomfort. "Every second of it."
A few players laughed quietly.
The room gradually settled as Niels stepped into the center. The conversations faded almost instantly.
He looked around the room before speaking.
"Good work today," he said calmly. "Not the result we came for, but we played against the league leaders and showed character. When things got difficult, you stayed organized and trusted each other."
He nodded toward Max. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
"Captain stepped up when we needed it."
Max gave a small shrug but the players tapped the benches in appreciation.
Niels continued. "There are still things to improve. Our first-half pressure management, transitions, and final-third decisions. We’ll work on those this week."
He glanced briefly at Reece.
"And sacrifices like that save goals. But we need everyone healthy."
Reece gave a small nod.
"Now recover and rest. We’ll travel back tonight."
The meeting ended and the players slowly began showering and changing. The room filled with the usual post-match sounds with quiet conversations, and occasional laughter as tension finally faded.
About forty minutes later, the team boarded the club bus outside the stadium.
Most players sank into their seats immediately. Dev put on headphones.
Kieron leaned his head back and closed his eyes.
Ellis and Nate quietly talked about a few defensive moments from the match.
Near the front, Niels sat reviewing notes on a tablet while occasionally glancing back at the players.
Max sat beside the window, watching the stadium lights fade behind them as the bus pulled onto the road.
It had been a long match.
Not a perfect result.
But it was a performance that proved something important.
Crawley could compete with the very best in the league.
The bus ride back was quiet for most of the journey. The adrenaline from the match had completely faded now, replaced by the deep exhaustion that followed a hard ninety minutes.
Some players dozed off, others stared out the windows as the dark highway lights passed by.
Hours later, the bus finally rolled into the Crawley training ground parking area.
One by one, the players stood, stretching stiff legs and grabbing their bags.
"Finally home," Dev muttered, slinging his backpack over his shoulder.
Kieron chuckled tiredly. "Feels like we played two matches."
They stepped off the bus and the training ground was quiet.
Niels stepped forward once everyone had gathered near the entrance.
"Alright, everyone," he said, looking around at the squad.
The players listened quietly, some leaning against their bags.
"You deserve the rest tomorrow," Niels continued. "Utilize it properly and recover well. We’ll be back to training the day after, and we’ll review the match together."
Several players nodded.
Then Niels turned slightly toward Reece, who was still moving carefully with his ankle wrapped.
"And Reece," he said in a calmer tone, "you’ll need checkups tomorrow with the medical team. We’re not sure yet how long you’ll be out, so we’ll evaluate it properly."
Reece nodded slowly. "Alright, coach."
Thomas stepped beside him. "We’ll run scans and tests in the morning. Best not to guess tonight."
Max walked over and lightly tapped Reece’s shoulder. "Still saved us a goal though."
Reece smirked. "Worth it."
"Maybe," Max replied with a small grin. "But next time try not to scare everyone."
A few players laughed softly.
Niels gave a small nod to the group.
"Alright, that’s it for tonight. Get home safe."
The team slowly began dispersing into the parking lot some heading toward their cars, others walking toward the dorm area of the training complex.
The long day was finally over.
As the last of the players drove out of the training ground, the parking lot grew quiet again.
Niels stood near the entrance for a moment, watching the empty road where the team had just left. Beside him, Thomas closed the medical kit he had been carrying since the stadium.
"Well," Thomas said with a small exhale, "that was quite a match."
Niels nodded slowly. "It was. Brighton pushed hard, but the boys held together."
Thomas glanced down at his notes. "Reece worries me a little though."
"Ankle?" Niels asked.
"Yeah," Thomas replied. "He was able to stand and walk, which is a good sign. But the way it twisted during that clearance... we need proper scans tomorrow."
Niels folded his arms as they walked.
"Best case?" he asked.
"Minor ligament strain. Maybe a couple of weeks," Thomas said. "Worst case... a tear. That could mean a lot longer."
Niels sighed quietly.
"He saved us a goal," he said. "But I’d rather keep him healthy for the rest of the season."
Thomas nodded. "Players like him always go all-in during those moments."
They reached the doorway and paused for a moment.
"Either way," Thomas added, "we’ll know more tomorrow. I’ll run the tests first thing in the morning."
"Let’s hope for the best," Niels said. "And keep me updated."
Thomas gave a small nod. "Will do."
For a moment they both stood in silence, the long day finally catching up with them.
Niels glanced back once more toward the empty parking lot.
"Get some rest, Thomas," he said. "Tomorrow will be another long day."
Thomas chuckled lightly. "When isn’t it?"
They exchanged brief nods before heading their separate ways down the hallway.
The drive to home was quiet.
Inside the car, however, his mind was anything but quiet.
The match replayed in fragments in his head Brighton’s early goal, the defensive pressure, Max’s equalizer, and then the moment that kept returning.
And Reece’s clearance.
Niels could still see it clearly. The desperate run back, the slide, the ball flying away from the goal line... and the way Reece stayed down afterward.
He pulled into his driveway and turned off the engine, but he didn’t get out immediately.
If Thomas’ concerns were right, Reece could be out for a while. Even if it was only a few weeks, that still left a gap on the right side of the defense.
Right-back wasn’t a position you could just ignore.
Ellis had stepped in well tonight, but it was still a sudden adjustment. Reece understood the defensive rotations, the overlaps with Dev, the timing of when to push forward and when to stay back.
That chemistry took time.
Niels rubbed his forehead slightly.
"If he’s out..." he thought, "that leaves us a gap there."
Ellis could cover it.
But Ellis was still developing, and the season schedule wasn’t going to slow down. There were more matches ahead, more pressure, more opponents who would test that side of the pitch.
Eventually Niels stepped out of the car and walked toward his front door.
He walked to the kitchen and poured a glass of water before leaning lightly against the counter.
Tomorrow they would know more.
Tomorrow Thomas would run the scans.
And tomorrow Niels would begin figuring out how to adjust the team if Crawley’s starting right-back wasn’t going to be available.
For now, though, there was nothing left to do.
