Together Apart: Her White Moonlight Has Returned Too-Chapter 99: From Now On, Let Me Be the One Who Loves You
"Vera, when I invited you to dance the first dance last night, it wasn’t because I needed a favor." Miles held her closer, "It was because I wanted to dance the first dance with you."
Vera was stunned.
"I don’t know when you started liking me, nor how many years you’ve liked me."
Miles’ voice was gentle, tinged with sadness, "Just thinking about how many times you’ve cried for me makes my heart ache unconsciously."
"These past few days, I’ve thought a lot, I’ve hesitated." Miles smiled helplessly, "Since childhood, I’ve been at ease with everything, except when it comes to you..."
"When I made you angry as a kid, if you refused to talk to me, I could still coax you, but what if..."
What if they start, but can’t have a happy ending?
Miles spoke wistfully, "What do I do if I really lose you? Zoey was right saying I treated you like a sister, but in my eyes, you’ve always been different from her. Forgive me for realizing it so late after all these years."
Vera blinked her sore eyes, "But I stopped liking you long ago."
"Then can it be my turn to like you from now on, is that okay?"
If eighteen-year-old Vera heard this, she might have cried tears of joy, but there was too much time between them.
Vera gently pushed his hand away, turning to face him.
"But I don’t want your affection anymore."
The air seemed to freeze.
Miles retreated half a step, "Eat breakfast while it’s hot, I have to go to the law firm, don’t worry about the online stuff, I’ll help you deal with it."
"Miles..."
"Vera, I’m not acting on impulse." Miles looked at her warmly, "I’m sure my feelings for you are not out of pity or guilt, and I’m certainly not thick-skinned enough to think you still like me."
Vera averted her gaze.
"Vera, I want to officially pursue you. I’m saying this just to let you know I’m not impulsive, this decision comes after careful consideration."
Vera thought of the figure from the banquet and almost instinctively asked, "What about Jane?"
"I broke up with her two years ago." Miles ruffled the top of her head, "I won’t deny my past with her in front of you, but that is just the past. Vera, let’s look forward together, okay?"
After Miles left, Vera forced herself to calm down.
Last night, amidst the cold wind, she was prepared to end things with him for good but didn’t expect him to suddenly confess.
How much could he possibly care for her?
Vera didn’t want to think deeply about it, after all, she wouldn’t let herself fall for such an elusive affection again.
Vera searched online, found previous commenters, and sent them private messages, hoping to talk with them.
But her messages went unanswered.
Vera forced herself to stop overthinking, she gathered past reports from when her grandfather was falsely accused online.
Not long after Simon Warren passed away, his clinic unexpectedly caught fire and turned to ashes. Clearly, someone wanted to hide something.
Vera thought of Luke Shaw, she carefully investigated Wellspring Pharmacy’s records, discovering that this pharmaceutical company had been growing rapidly in recent years.
Luke Shaw appearing at Corvid’s hospital was definitely not by chance.
Vera organized her thoughts and decided to first reach out to the patients’ families.
She called Linda Young, whose voice betrayed her excitement, "Are you with Miles now?"
Vera frowned.
"His law firm just released a statement, pointing out a dozen marketing accounts that led the charge against you, saying they’re gathering evidence and won’t let any off! His firm just opened, and the first thing they’re doing is defending you, you two..."
"No," Vera said firmly, "We’re not suitable for each other."
"What’s unsuitable?" Linda was puzzled, "Many of the accounts attacking you are handled by Jane’s domestic agency, these articles blatantly want to put you down and make you appear as an independent, strong woman!"
"I just don’t want to be the one left behind again."
Vera collected her thoughts, told Linda her plan, and Linda agreed to accompany her on a trip.
After hanging up, an unknown number called.
Vera hesitated before answering, Jane Shea’s voice came through, "Vera, I left too hastily last night, didn’t get a chance to catch up with you, can we grab a coffee?"
"You’re already broken up with Miles."
Jane paused for a few seconds and chuckled, "So what?"
"We’re not friends," Vera calmly said, "so there’s no need to meet."
Jane’s voice turned cold, "Do you think now that he broke up with me, you finally got your chance? Why don’t you guess why we broke up? Or guess who dumped whom!"
"It’s none of my business."
"Do you still think you’re that high and mighty princess?"
Jane laughed once, "Vera Yves, the Vera now can only wear knock-off dresses! As long as I’m around, he’ll never notice you. Stop wasting your efforts, find a divorced man to marry!"
"If you were really as confident as you claim, you wouldn’t have made this call." Vera concluded and hung up.
In the dressing room, Jane heard the busy tone, and gripped her phone tightly.
Back then, Miles didn’t choose Vera, and now that Vera is divorced, it’s even more impossible!
Vera hung up the call, spent the day in the study organizing her materials, found contacts for several media outlets that had previously followed up on the clinic’s incident.
Only when finished did she realize she was a bit hungry, she changed her clothes and stepped out, bumping into Miles.
Vera thought of his words from the morning, feeling somewhat awkward, "I’m about to go out, you..."
"I’ll go with you." Miles smiled at her, "Or, we don’t go out, I’ll cook dinner for you."
"How do you know I don’t have an appointment?"
Miles looked at her bare face, and the casually tied bun on her head, "Do you?"
Vera chose to walk into the elevator, Miles followed, smiling at her, "Why can’t you tie a neat bun yet?"
Vera kept her gaze fixed straight ahead, "I just didn’t tie it carefully."
Miles looked at her unemotional face, "Going to The Summit?"
"I want to eat noodles."
"Don’t you love their beef noodles the most?"
"Too far."
"Far?" Miles couldn’t help but pinch her cheek, "Even if you ask me to carry you there now, I wouldn’t mind the distance."
Vera finally reacted, rubbing her face and glaring at him.
Miles laughed heartily, "You’re still cuter like this."
At The Summit, Vera wrapped herself in a down jacket, revealing only her big eyes, following Miles inside.
Upon entering the hall, they bumped into a group of people.
"Miles!" someone approached, "You said you wouldn’t come, why have you..." seeing Vera behind him, the person smiled again, "Out on a date with your girlfriend?"
Miles laughed but didn’t deny it.
Vera sensed a gaze burning into her, she couldn’t help but look around and saw Winston Valentine standing not far away.
