Together Apart: Her White Moonlight Has Returned Too-Chapter 49: Don’t Forget Whose Woman You Are
Vera Yves shook her head, "No."
Someone laughed, "It’s really rare, after so many years since graduation, we didn’t expect that the two most prominent figures of our class would gather together one day."
Years after graduation, the number of reunions these two attended could be counted on one hand, let alone appearing together.
"Miles has been thriving abroad these years."
Miles Monroe smiled, with a hint of self-deprecation in his voice, "Just passing the days."
"How many days are you back this time?"
"The plan is a week." Miles Monroe glanced at Vera Yves, and said meaningfully, "Came back to handle some matters temporarily."
Compared to the always aloof academic Winston Valentine, Miles Monroe’s approachable nature made him more popular in the class, and everyone’s focus was on him, chatting endlessly.
Miles Monroe occasionally responded with a sentence or two, ensuring no awkward pauses, always handling things tactfully.
"I just remembered, you... aren’t you that little sister of Miles?" 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢
Someone pointed at Vera Yves, pleasantly surprised, "I thought you looked familiar, but back then you were just this little, still in middle school, often coming to our class door, asking us to call Miles!"
Vera Yves was not at all delighted, hoping they would quickly change the topic away from her.
However, these people seemed to have opened a floodgate of conversation.
"At that time, I thought, this little girl is fair and cute like a porcelain doll, surely she’d grow up to be a beauty, and indeed."
"She had such a sweet mouth, calling everyone brother and sister, really likable."
The always silent Winston Valentine suddenly chuckled lightly and spoke slowly, "Indeed, sweet mouth, and really good at acting coy."
Vera Yves looked at Winston Valentine in surprise.
Winston Valentine leaned in a bit, extending his long arm to gently wrap around her waist, "Calling everyone brother, it’s hard to refuse."
Vera Yves felt a bit bewildered, at that time she indeed often ran to the high school division to look for Miles.
She would ask whoever she bumped into to help call him, afraid they wouldn’t help, so she could only be sweet-tongued, with a sweet smile.
As for who she asked, she had no impression at all, because back then, her mind was full of Miles Monroe.
"Looks like even back then President Valentine had a fondness for Mrs. Valentine."
"The little girl was just developing at that time, she was really petite when she first came, but by our senior year she had already grown tall and graceful, it’s no wonder President Valentine liked her."
Winston Valentine just smiled, not denying it.
The crowd turned the topic back to Winston Valentine and Vera Yves, embellishing their interest-driven marriage into a tale of youthful passion.
A woman suddenly looked at Winston Valentine, "Winston, where’s Cecilia? Why didn’t she come? When I contacted her last time, she said she would."
The woman named Wendy Jennings, a daughter of The Jennings Group, was also Cecilia Vaughn’s close friend.
Her words showed her close relationship with Winston Valentine. While speaking, she also cast a disdainful glance at Vera Yves.
Vera Yves, still searching her mind for whether she ever asked Winston Valentine for help, didn’t even notice her look.
Winston Valentine just glanced coldly at her from the corner of his eyes, "Why don’t you have her contact details?"
His attitude was cold and distant.
Wendy Jennings awkwardly smiled, unwilling to give up, "I just thought since Cecilia and you are close, you would know her situation best."
Winston Valentine did not respond to her comment.
Miles Monroe looked at Winston Valentine and said meaningfully, "A married man should keep his distance from other women, otherwise it seems inappropriate."
Vera Yves clenched her palm tightly.
Winston Valentine’s face darkened.
Indifferently, Wendy Jennings said, "Cecilia is Winston’s cousin now, how can there be anything wrong with a cousin being close to her cousin? Besides, who in our class doesn’t know Winston took great care of Cecilia back then..."
Miles Monroe mocked coldly, "Adults should know the difference between love and friendship, mixing them up is truly ridiculous, President Valentine, don’t you think?"
Winston Valentine just shot a cold glance at Wendy Jennings, "Miss Jennings, I don’t think we’ve reached the familiarity where you can call me by name."
Chilled by his gaze, Wendy Jennings fell silent.
The dishes started arriving on the table.
Someone quickly changed the subject, finally moving past the awkward moment.
Vera Yves poured herself a glass of red wine, just as she was about to take it, Miles Monroe naturally pushed her glass away, "You don’t look well, better not drink, have some warm water."
Saying this, he considerately poured her a glass of warm water.
Vera Yves thought about her pregnancy and realized she shouldn’t drink, so she reached for the water glass instead.
The big hand on her waist applied a gentle yet firm pressure.
Vera Yves instantly blushed, picking up the water glass for a sip, Winston Valentine leaned close to her ear, "Tasty?"
Vera Yves choked and coughed once, while Miles Monroe watched her with concern, "Vera?"
Vera Yves suddenly stood up, "Excuse me, I... I need to go to the restroom."
Vera Yves hurriedly left the private room, and once the door shut, she felt like she could finally breathe again.
She hadn’t expected to see someone she’d been trying hard to avoid meeting here.
He was even more mature and steady than before, yet his voice was as gentle as it had been in her memories when he called her.
Vera Yves entered the restroom and splashed her face with cold water.
Linda Young’s call came through, and Vera Yves calmed herself before answering as she walked out.
"Vera, did you know Miles is back in the country?"
Vera Yves rubbed her temples, "I’ve already met him."
"It’s been years since you last met, right?" Linda Young mused, "How does it feel seeing him again, do you still have any..."
Suddenly, her wrist was grabbed, and the next moment she was pushed against the wall, with Linda Young still talking on the phone, but the man’s lips had already descended.
Vera Yves resisted, pushing against him.
The domineering kiss left her no room to breathe, swiftly conquering her defenses.
A short distance away, Miles Monroe stopped in his tracks, coming to look for someone.
Winston Valentine held Vera Yves’s waist tightly, pulling her into his arms with dominance, tender yet lingering.
Vera Yves tilted her head back, her cheeks flushed from his kiss.
That little girl who used to follow him around had already grown up into a mature woman.
Finding it hard to breathe from the kiss, the scene of him and Cecilia Vaughn embracing in the hospital flashed through her mind, and she pushed him away forcefully.
Gasping for air, Vera Yves said, "Winston Valentine, what do you want to do?"
Winston Valentine looked at her angry little face, her resistance frustrating him, "Vera Yves, don’t forget whose woman you are."
Vera Yves wiped her mouth corners.
Winston Valentine took her hand and, ignoring her struggles, led her back to the private room.
The men had already moved their conversation to business.
Vera Yves kept her head down, eating in silence, praying for it to end soon.
Miles Monroe watched her eating so hastily and chuckled, "Why are you still eating in such a hurry like when you were a kid?"
Vera Yves smiled faintly, "Just a habit."
Seeing the not-so-genuine smile on her face, Miles Monroe moved a little closer, "Vera, can we not hold grudges?"
The girl before him had shed her youthful naivety, now with an aura of elegance and maturity, yet her demeanor was filled with cold detachment, seemingly erecting a barrier between them, not allowing him to approach.
Vera Yves felt a warmth in her eyes, lowering her head, "I’m not holding a grudge against you."
