Together Apart: Her White Moonlight Has Returned Too-Chapter 47: He Won’t Let Her Have This Child
"I really shouldn’t have come back, being such a scheming woman." Vera Yves withdrew her hand, took off her coat, turned her back, and deftly tore her shirt into strips.
"If you die, I should be able to get quite a bit of inheritance and won’t have to worry about food and clothing for the rest of my life."
Much better than being this worthless Mrs. Valentine.
Vera put on her coat again and began to help him bandage the wound.
"So why did you come back?"
Vera’s voice was indifferent, "My grandfather often told me that one should return favors and repay kindness. You saved me, so I’m here to save you. It’s only fair, and didn’t you often say I’m stupid? Just consider this me being stupid once more."
Even though she didn’t want to admit it, she had unknowingly grown fond and concerned for him over the three years of their marriage.
This was a fact she could not escape, no matter how hard she tried.
Vera tied off the cloth strip, lifted her head to look at him, "Winston Valentine, I don’t want you to die."
The soft light of the flashlight shone on her face. Winston Valentine raised his hand gently to wipe away the tears from the corner of her eyes, then leaned in and kissed her lips.
Surviving a disaster, the touch on the lips was the most real sensation.
Vera suddenly wanted to be reckless, not thinking about who was in his heart, not dwelling on those troublesome matters, only wanting the person in front of her who dared to risk his life for her.
She gently wrapped her arms around his waist, responding to his kiss.
"President Valentine, Madam!"
A bright light shone over, bringing Vera back to her senses, wanting to pull away, but Winston Valentine held her hand.
After descending the mountain, Winston Valentine first went to the nearest hospital to have the bullet removed. Along the way, their hands remained tightly clasped, neither of them intending to let go.
It wasn’t until the bullet was removed from Winston Valentine’s arm, and the wound was bandaged, that he exited the operating room and instructed Walter Lowell to arrange a car immediately to head to the airport and return to Imperia.
Vera seemed only to come back to herself then. There were still scratches on her face from branches, faintly aching.
"Vera, are you alright?" Linda Young rushed to the hospital after getting the news and, seeing Vera’s disheveled state, her eyes reddened, "Why do you have blood on you? Are you hurt somewhere?"
Vera shook her head, "I’m fine, the blood isn’t mine."
"I had Walter book you a flight for tomorrow daytime, get some rest tonight," Winston Valentine instructed before leaving without hesitation.
Except Walter didn’t leave with him, instead staying to accompany Vera.
"Is the blood Winston Valentine’s?" Linda Young watched his departing figure.
Vera nodded, "He got shot in the arm."
"Why is he in such a hurry to return to Imperia despite being injured?" Linda Young asked, puzzled, then guessed, "It’s for Cecilia Vaughn again, isn’t it?"
Vera’s vision suddenly darkened, and Linda Young quickly supported her, "Vera, what’s wrong? Are you not feeling well?"
Vera regained herself after a while and shook her head.
She rushed back to the hotel that night, took a shower, and buried herself under the covers for a good sleep, waking up only at noon the next day.
Simon Warren had fallen into a deep coma, with no telling when he might wake up.
The police had sealed off his clinic and were conducting an investigation.
Vera hadn’t planned to return to Imperia so soon, but Walter’s constant presence made her uncomfortable, so she had to go back to Imperia in the afternoon.
It was already past eight in the evening when she reached the villa.
Winston Valentine wasn’t there.
Vera organized her luggage and called Hannah Hayes to let her know she was safe.
"Vera, it’s just as well you’re back. Tomorrow, you and I will go to the Valentine Family to propose marriage!"
Vera rubbed her temples, "Mom, don’t even think about it."
"If it wasn’t for you, would I be resorting to this?"
Hannah Hayes became more agitated the more she spoke, "Today at the hospital with your dad for a check-up, I saw Winston Valentine attending to that little tramp, treating her like she’s precious! Look at her and then look at you!"
Hannah Hayes disdainfully added, "If you had half her ability, would the project be a bust?"
He was in a hurry to come back for Cecilia Vaughn after all.
Vera felt a headache at her words, "I’m tired, I’ll hang up first."
After hanging up the phone, Vera went to the bathroom, feeling a dull ache in her lower abdomen.
Winston Valentine didn’t come home all night.
The next morning, Vera went to the pharmacy and bought a pregnancy test.
Back at the villa, after testing, Vera felt bewildered. Although she had vaguely felt it, seeing the two lines left her at a loss, with only one thought in her mind: Winston Valentine wouldn’t let her have this child.
After destroying the test, Vera threw it in the trash bin.
Having learned from previous experience, Vera didn’t waste time and went to the hospital, recalling carefully—it was likely from the night he was set up.
That night was so chaotic, she even forgot if he took any precautions later on.
While waiting for the report, Vera suddenly remembered Hannah Hayes’s words.
In the hospital room.
Cecilia Vaughn sat on the bed, her face pale enough to be frightening, and she looked at Winston Valentine who sat not far away, "Winston, tell me the truth, did you go looking for Vera?"
Winston Valentine rubbed his temples. The doctor said she couldn’t be upset, "I was just on a business trip."
Cecilia Vaughn looked at his injured arm. If it was just a business trip, how could he have heard about her disappearance and come back so late?
She spent the night in the cold wind by the river. Where was he? Was he with Vera? Was he hurt protecting Vera?
"Winston, do you know what I was thinking about the night by the river?" Cecilia Vaughn gazed at him affectionately, "Back in high school, when I was feeling down, you often skipped class to take me to the riverside to relax. I thought we’d be together forever then."
Winston Valentine stood up, "Cecilia, we’ve grown up, and many things require us to look forward. I have some work matters. I’ll come to see you again tomorrow."
"Winston!" Cecilia Vaughn saw he was about to leave, hurriedly trying to get out of bed, but in her haste nearly fell to the ground.
Winston Valentine stepped forward to catch her, and Cecilia Vaughn leaned into his arms. With his other arm injured, he couldn’t push her away.
"I beg you, don’t go, alright?"
Through the glass on the door, Vera saw the two embracing.
Cecilia Vaughn noticed the figure by the door and suddenly said, "Winston, I ended up like this all because of Vera! You promised to punish her for me, you must keep your word!"
Winston Valentine’s gaze deepened, "Rest assured, I will give you an explanation."
Vera tightened her grip, punishment? Explanation? What was he planning to do for Cecilia Vaughn against her?
Even after experiencing life and death together, he still didn’t trust her!
Vera thought of Cecilia Vaughn’s provocative look. If she did it, she’d admit it. If she didn’t, Cecilia Vaughn wouldn’t pin it on her!
Vera turned and left.
"Will you divorce her?" Cecilia Vaughn looked at him expectantly.
Winston Valentine moved her hand away, "No."
Vera took the test results, tore them up, threw them in the trash bin beside her, and sat back in the car, her mind in a mess.
Winston Valentine wouldn’t let her have this child, but it was her child, and she couldn’t bear to let it go.
Zoe Monroe’s call came in, and Vera collected herself to answer.
Zoe Monroe’s voice was filled with excitement, "Vera, my cousin will arrive at the airport at nine tomorrow morning. Why don’t you come with me to pick him up?"
