Chapter 35 -35 What a Good Student!
“Hiss…” Lucien tactically fell back, suddenly feeling Carly’s figure somewhat unfamiliar.
It was as if she was enveloped in a layer of glittering light, becoming exceptionally dazzling.
After vigorously shaking his head, Lucien finally managed to dismiss these strange thoughts from his mind. However, looking at Carly, who appeared somewhat restrained at the moment, his smile became even more genial.
For the current Lucien, reverence was just as precious as a Magic Stone, if not more so.
After all, having killed Apollo, Lucien had managed to replenish some of his resources; at least he was not as desperately short on Magic Stones as before.
But after upgrading his system, Lucien now needed a substantial amount of reverence to fuel the system’s identification module to accelerate his learning and progress in Pharmacy.
From that perspective, Carly herself was Lucien’s most valuable productive resource at the moment, second to none.
Thinking this, Lucien felt he needed to do something to coax some more reverence out of Carly, this “little tycoon.”
Right beside him lay his recently repaired Wizard Robe. Originally, Lucien had planned to keep it for a while longer, to reward her when she performed well, but now, for the sake of reverence, Lucien flexibly adjusted his principles.
“Here, this is for you,” Lucien said, handing the Wizard Robe to Carly with a smile.
“Thank you, Wizard Mentor Lucien,” Carly unconsciously stretched out her hands to receive the Wizard Robe from Lucien, but soon, she noticed something unusual about it.
“Wizard Mentor Lucien, this…” Carly felt that the Wizard Robe was somewhat hot to handle and hurriedly tried to give it back.
She knew all too well that Lucien was rather strapped for cash. Even the Wizard Robe Lucien used himself was just ordinary clothing, but this Wizard Robe was clearly a precious Witch Tool.
“It’s not of much use to me,” Lucien said with a smile as he handed the Wizard Robe back to Carly, his eyes encouraging her.
“No, no! According to the principle of equivalent exchange…” Carly’s voice was soft, and her mind buzzed.
In her heart, Carly couldn’t help but feel a faint sense of absurdity: while other new bloods were racking their brains to protect their rightful interests and tactically dealing with their mentors and fellow apprentices, she was painstakingly thinking about what she could offer to match Wizard Mentor Lucien’s unilateral contributions.
She really felt a bit embarrassed!
After all, since she had just entered the academy, Lucien had been the one leading her step by step on the wizard’s path, and she really had no way to help Wizard Mentor Lucien at all…
Not to mention, Wizard Mentor Lucien had invested in her multiple times, even the alchemical armor she was currently wearing was paid for with Magic Stones by Wizard Mentor Lucien.
Although Wizard Mentor Lucien had initially said that she should repay the Magic Stones used for the light armor herself, he had never urged her to repay them so far.
Wasn’t that virtually a sort of gift?
Carly gently bit her lip, looked at the Wizard Robe in her hands, and her gaze gradually became resolute.

“I… I can’t take it!” Carly stepped back, mustered her courage, and looked up at Lucien.
If she accepted it, she would feel somewhat uneasy in her heart.
Lucien watched Carly’s stubbornness at the moment, his fingers subconsciously tapping on the table.
Carly noticed the subtle movement of Lucien’s fingers and couldn’t help but lower her head, feeling uneasy.
After all, a student defying a mentor was a serious matter.

“Well then, let’s follow the rule of equivalent exchange among Wizards,” Lucien looked at the uneasy Carly and said after thinking for a moment.
“During this period, I plan to try Pharmacy, so you’ll start as my lab assistant, helping me with the miscellaneous tasks. Although handling some materials might still be a bit challenging for you now, tasks like washing test tubes and tidying up the lab—that’s all yours. Once you have a few more spirit runes solidified and meet the standard, I will gradually teach you about potions, but by that time, you’ll also need to take on some responsibilities typical of a Pharmacist Apprentice.”
“Yes!” Carly, hearing Lucien’s arrangement, couldn’t help but lift her head, her eyes twinkling, and her face could not hide her joy.

Lucien looked at Carly, who was sheepishly grinning, and couldn’t help feeling speechless.
Other Wizards’ apprentices wouldn’t take initiative without their mentor’s instructions, yet why did it seem that Carly was always eager to volunteer? This made the rewards he had intended to mention seem trivial.
Even giving him an extra 10 points of Reverence Value.
Lucien tapped the table with a bit of force to capture Carly’s attention before he spoke.
“I’ll need about four hours each day, and I’ll teach you about Pharmacy during this time, so the compensation won’t be high… just two Magic Stones a week, that sounds like an equivalent exchange.”
Carly blinked, having exchanged information with other apprentices these days, so she was quite familiar with the situation of other newcomers.
With other Wizards, just to learn the basics of Potion Studies, they had to pay at least twenty Magic Stones as tuition fees. And here was Lucien, saying that she would be his lab assistant, but in reality, she was learning Pharmacy directly from him; other Wizards’ apprentices would just do chores as expected. But here Lucien was, seriously discussing “equivalent exchange” with her?
Carly felt that the term “equivalent exchange” was almost being taken for granted in her mentor Lucien’s world.
“I, I don’t need Magic Stones,” Carly carefully spoke up after being sure that Mentor Lucien was not upset, trying hard to protect Lucien’s interests.
“Equivalent exchange!” Lucien sternly said, pretending to tap Carly’s head with his finger.
“Then… one Magic Stone… one Magic Stone is enough, it can’t be higher than that!” Carly said to Lucien, timidly holding up one finger.
She truly felt she wasn’t worth that much. Although she was deeply touched by Lucien’s mentorship, Carly insisted she also had her principles!

As Carly tried to negotiate downwards, Lucien received a prompt pop-up from the system.
Lucien: !!!
After the shock, Lucien looked at Carly with incredibly soft eyes.
Such a good student!
