This Spiritual Energy is Lethal!-Chapter 182 - Cavalry
Chapter 182: Chapter 182: Cavalry
Chapter 182: Chapter 182: Cavalry
Chen Ke and Sam pressed their shoulders against the rolling shutter door, glancing at each other.
“3, 2, 1, push!” Sam said.
Together they exerted force, feeling the rolling door dent significantly due to their effort, but it was blocked by something heavier outside.
Judging from the weight, the obstacle outside seemed to be similar to sandbags or cement bags.
“Keep going, push again,” Chen Ke said.
They both exerted more force, pushing the rolling door further outward, feeling the friction from the heavy object behind it, but there still wasn’t enough space.
Sam looked down at the survivors below and said, “We need a few strong men to help.”
Soon, three men volunteered to step up, but the staircase could only accommodate four people side by side.
“Whoever gets tired, rotate out,” Chen Ke said.
Thus, four men continued to push against the door with their shoulders.
“I don’t understand, isn’t a rolling shutter door supposed to open from top to bottom… why are you pushing it?” Diana, standing at the foot of the stairs, looked up and asked, finding it strange to see the men pushing a vertically operating door.
“There’s a heavy object blocking this door from outside; it’s deformed. We need to push this weight away first to open the door,” Sam explained.
The four men exerted force again, and with a loud “bang,” something fell to the ground outside.
“Keep going, we’re almost there, the door is starting to straighten,” Chen Ke said.
Hearing this, everyone was more motivated and pushed harder, the door creaking as it regained its normal flexibility.
“There should be enough space now, let’s lift it up,” Sam suggested.
Chen Ke nodded and searched the ground for the latch, but unfortunately, the door was locked from the outside and there was no lock mechanism on the inside.
“Difficult, the lock is on the outside,” Sam also failed to find the lock.
“No worries, this gun fires Magnum bullets,” Chen Ke pulled out Diana’s Luger revolver from his pocket; the .357 caliber bullets could easily shoot through this door.
“Do you need me to do it? After all, I am a Ranger,” Sam looked at the gun in Chen Ke’s hand and asked.
As a soldier, Sam was eager to hold the gun himself, but at that moment Diana had already rejected another Black person, making it awkward for him to speak up.
Moreover, he could tell that Chen Ke and Diana knew each other; otherwise, an Administration Bureau agent wouldn’t just hand over a gun to a stranger.
“Let me try first, if it fails, then you can give it a shot,” Chen Ke said with a smile.
The gun was given to him by Diana. Her trust in him and her reluctance to hand the gun to others made Chen Ke feel both reasonable and right not to pass the gun to anyone else.

However, from their brief association, Chen Ke felt Sam wasn’t a bad person and wanted to help as a retired military man, so it was hard to reject him outright.
“Alright, there are usually two locks on a rolling shutter door, one on each side, though some only have one. We’ll have to try our luck. Are there enough bullets?” Sam, seeing that Chen Ke didn’t conclusively deny him, began to give guidance.
“I still have 12 bullets; this Luger has a six-round chamber. I’ll try the middle first to see if the lock is there,” Chen Ke said.
He did not rashly fire but stepped back a few steps, standing at the left side of the stairs, aiming the gun at the bottom of the rolling door.
“Everyone step back, beware of ricochets,” Sam understood Chen Ke’s intention and thus moved everyone to the other side of the stairs.
“I’m going to shoot,” Chen Ke warned, and after speaking, he pulled the trigger.
“Bang!”
The large-caliber bullet exited the barrel, hitting the bottom of the rolling door and punched a hole directly below. The revolver’s shooting felt odd, and Chen Ke was unaccustomed to it.
He bent down to look at the hole, about the size of a fingertip, letting a bit of light through.
To get a view of the outside, Chen Ke bent down and peered through the bullet hole with his left eye, only to see piles of white sandbags stacked at the entrance, which had partially collapsed earlier due to shoving.
It was daytime outside, and although the light was mostly blocked by the sandbags, this much was certain.
“How does it look?” Sam asked.
“Barricaded on both sides, and there are a lot of sandbags outside, plus it’s daytime,” Chen Ke replied.
“Sandbags…” Sam mused thoughtfully.
“I’m not sure which station this is outside, but the hall must be filled with these sandbags,” Chen Ke stood up, aiming the gun at the lower right side of the rolling shutter door.
“It’s strange that the gunshots earlier didn’t attract anyone,” Sam said.
If this was the subway hall outside, there should have been people who heard the gunshots, but Sam reconsidered, suspecting that perhaps people nearby had been evacuated.
There were two more gunshots, the first bullet puncturing the rolling door as usual, while the second hit something hard, creating a sharp sound and ricocheting.
Luckily, this ricocheting bullet had penetrated the rolling door, embedding itself in the sandbags outside.
“Hit, it’s here, you try,” Chen Ke said.
Sam bent down, grabbed the gap at the bottom of the rolling door, and pulled up with all his might. The door did move, but the left side was still locked. However, the gap Sam opened on the right side was big enough to get a glimpse of the outside.
“Is there anyone there? Is anyone there?! We’re trapped here!” Sam called out, lowering his head toward the gap outside.
“Hey! Stop shouting, I have a feeling there won’t be anyone here,” Chen Ke shook his head.
He was worried Sam’s shouts might attract unwanted things; the world outside was unlikely to be Opportunity City, and any human presence could be disturbing.
He instructed Sam to step back, aimed at the other side of the rolling door, guessed the position, and fired two more shots.
“Alright, we can open the door now,” Chen Ke said, as he swung out the magazine, ejecting the five spent cartridges and the loaded bullet, reloading six rounds.
Impatient, Sam grasped the handles at the bottom of the door and yanked the rolling door upward. After a noisy disturbance, natural white light flooded into the subway station from the stairwell entrance.
After being in the dark, red-lit environment for a while, seeing natural light again relaxed everyone significantly. The survivors all wanted to rush to the streets to seek help and understand what had happened.
Chen Ke positioned himself at the opening, making a “shush” gesture, advising, “Up there might not be safer than down here. We should keep quiet for now and send a few strong young people up first to check things out.”
“Wait a minute… you mean…” someone in the crowd grasped what Chen Ke was implying.
Faced with a world already equipped with Spiritual Energy, the masses weren’t fools.
“He’s right, let’s send a few people up first to see what the situation is. It’s too risky for a large group to rush out,” Diana said from the bottom of the stairs.
“Alright, I’ll go.”
“Me too.”
“I’m not injured, I’ll go too.”
People from the crowd volunteered, including some robust young women.
Sam chose two men and one sturdy woman, along with Chen Ke and himself, forming a minimal cavalry team of five.
Chen Ke descended the stairs, handing his gun back to Diana.
“You need this gun more than I do, Chen Ke. Take it,” Diana said.
“There are many injured here, and we’ve taken the fittest. If something happens, you’ll need it,” Chen Ke said.
Convinced by Chen Ke, Diana took the Luger revolver in her right hand. “Be careful up there.”
Chen Ke nodded and joined the team assembled on the stairs.
