Chapter 224 -205: Monger Greyriver Dies a Horrible Death

Laine had ceased its offensive against the mountainous orc tribes. Although no news had spread, all who were concerned about the war’s progress guessed the reason.

That dreadful Silvermoon Knight had finally died.

Without the Empire’s strongest Paladin, the extremely arrogant Laine had no choice but to halt its invasion. Upon learning this, the orcs launched a full counterattack. The result was that four of the five cities Laine had occupied were retaken by the orcs, leaving only the City of Fangs firmly in the hands of the Laine People.

After several assaults by the orcs, which left behind the bodies of thousands of orc warriors, they could only temporarily abandon their efforts.

Laine had taken the City of Fangs, the gateway to the mountains, but they had lost a Silvermoon Knight. Whether this was a loss or a gain was unclear.

But Amberser had recently come into some fortune.

After waiting by Naomi’s side for two days, Naomi finally awoke from the dreamscape.

As Naomi’s master, Amberser had already sensed her transformation.

Previously, Naomi was just an ordinary druid girl, lacking in talent and skill. After binding with Amberser, she was forcibly brought to Legendary Rank, which felt somewhat like forcing the growth of a plant. Having slept for two days, she had actually spent a considerable amount of time within the dreamscape.

This Natural Dreamscape could perfectly simulate everything a druid needed, and Naomi was diligent enough. Upon waking up, she had undergone a complete transformation.

“Can you transform into a dragon now?” Amberser asked.

Naomi nodded. “Although I’ve only tried in the dream, I’m confident I should be able to do it. Moreover, my wounds have healed.”

Naomi pointed at her neck, where there used to be a wound that cut across her throat, wavering between existence and nonexistence. Now, the wound had completely healed, indicating that Naomi had integrated the temporal power at her wound and was in full control of it.

The Hourglass Artifact also played a role here. Amberser felt nothing towards the artifact, and Katherine was the same, completely unable to use it. However, when Naomi touched the hourglass, the residual temporal power in her body began resonating with it, allowing Naomi to grasp this special power more quickly.

Katherine asked with some excitement, “Shall we give it a try now?!”

Traveling back to the past was an experience even the Elf Queen had never had before.

Amberser quickly said, “If she transforms into the Time Dragon here, the castle would burst. Besides, this is druid territory, and casting time-reversal abilities here might have unforeseen consequences.”

Katherine asked, “You mean it’s time to leave?”

Amberser nodded, indeed it was time to leave. However, the real trouble was giving an explanation to the Fury Tide Kingdom.

Monger Greyriver had sworn so many oaths; it was time to leave him dead without a complete corpse.

Leaving Katherine’s Treehouse Castle, Amberser returned to that small ravine.

The illusion he had created was still dutifully playing its part; Amberser’s instructions were “to appear listless” and “to remain bedridden for a long time,” while of course, refusing all treatments.

The illusion’s performance was perfect. At least Airel and the other druids hadn’t noticed anything amiss. They just thought that the Child of the Storm wasn’t used to the druid’s diet. Old Saress even caught a few fish for him to improve his meals.

The effects of this illusion were truly impressive, arguably the most absurd of all spells Amberser had mastered.

Returning to his room, Amberser cast the illusion again, taking on the appearance of Monger Greyriver. This time, however, he added some details to his disguise, making his complexion sickly pale, with grayish-white skin and cyanotic veins – a sight that would alarm anyone.

As soon as Amberser stepped out, he saw Airel standing outside, fidgeting with something that looked like herbs.

Surprised to see Amberser, Airel exclaimed, “Your face… what on earth happened to you?”

Amberser forced a smile and said, “Does it look serious? Haha, there are no mirrors here, so I can’t even see my own face.”

Even Airel, who might be naive, felt that something was off in Amberser’s tone and anxiously asked, “What sickness have you got?”

Amberser didn’t answer her question, instead asking, “Princess, you came with me to the Emerald Dream Forest, you must have learned quite a bit, right?”

Airel frowned, feeling an ominous premonition, as if listening to a eulogy.

Seeing that Airel remained silent, Amberser continued, “Well, it seems that without telling you the truth, you won’t be satisfied. Haven’t you noticed how much I’ve changed these past few days, as if I became another person?”

Airel nodded.

“Indeed, it is another person. You have become much smarter than before,” Amberser said.

With a slight smile, Amberser explained, “Most of a person’s intelligence is innate. As one’s experience grows, there might be some improvement, but ultimately, talent is more important. A person can’t possibly become smarter in just a few days, right?”

Airel was bewildered by Amberser’s words and hastily asked, “What on earth are you saying? Are you suggesting that you became smart at some cost?”

“Indeed, Princess, you’ve guessed right. I exchanged my life for the wisdom of these past few days. Thankfully, the Deity’s blessing was upon me, and though it was only for a few days, I managed to turn the tide for the kingdom. The Silent Night Pirate Group is no longer a threat, the Emerald Dream Forest has shown a willingness to cooperate, and even the Elf Tribe has exchanged gifts with us. Princess, as long as you continue to adhere to these diplomatic policies, the kingdom will be able to weather any crisis.”

“Wait, what are you talking about? What do you mean by exchanging your life?!” Airel seized Amberser’s arm in great agitation.

The strength of her grip made Amberser’s bones creak—if it had been before, this force would have been enough to break Amberser’s transformation spell. But now, the Illusion Realm was so effective that even if his bones were crushed, it wouldn’t be detected.

Therefore, Amberser was free to act.

“Princess, I can’t explain too clearly because the being that exchanged with me is an entity that must not be spoken of. All I can tell you is that on the day I failed to ambush the Silent Night Pirates, I already died at sea. A great being gave me one last chance to serve the kingdom with my remaining time.

“I’ve been highly regarded by His Majesty my whole life, but in these past years, I’ve achieved nothing of significance, instead repeatedly leading the kingdom into setbacks. It was only after I died once that I realized my mistakes. So, I came to a sudden epiphany, understanding that the way I’d ruled was wrong, and that your ideas, Princess, were the correct ones.”

As Amberser spoke, he coughed fiercely, suddenly coughing up a large clump of blood in his palm.

Airel was so shocked that she rushed to assist him to a chair and stretched out her hand to heal him with Divine Arts. However, as soon as she raised her hand, she cursed violently.

She was wearing the bracelet, and casting Divine Arts would only plunge her into slumber.

Just as Airel was about to call over a Druid for help, Amberser grabbed her.

“Princess, I don’t have much time left. You must listen carefully to what I’m going to say next—you must remember all of it.”

Amberser was so solemn that Airel could only suppress her inner turmoil and said, “Speak quickly, and then I’ll take you back for treatment!”

“Princess, my life is coming to an end, but after I’m gone, you must not make any fuss. Quietly return to the kingdom, don’t blame anyone, and don’t mention this matter to the Druids. We’ve finally reached a basic understanding for cooperation; we can’t let any mishap disrupt it. Moreover, my life and death have nothing to do with the Druids, and seeking them out would be pointless.

“Next, do not investigate the cause of my death. Death does not mean complete obliteration. I will find a way back. But if you delve into the details, you’re going to anger that great entity, and I will suffer as a result.

“Finally, after you return to the kingdom, keep a close eye on those Court Mages, especially that Necromancer—make sure you watch him closely.”

Airel listened attentively, her face growing increasingly bleak. She couldn’t understand what was happening and knew she was powerless to do anything.

“Don’t give up. There’s no need to speak of Lord of the Storm’s greatness—we pray to him and perhaps…”

Amberser hastily interrupted, “No, you must not involve the Deity. This is the price I’ve paid for the Fury Tide Kingdom. If we ask the Deity to intervene, it would nullify all previous efforts. Princess, remember, death is not utter oblivion. As long as you do as I have said, there’s a chance for me to return. But if you blow this out of proportion, it’ll be very difficult for me to come back.”

Airel clenched her teeth, filled with rage, yet she didn’t know where to direct her anger.

The crisis had come too unexpectedly, leaving her completely unprepared.

But Amberser allowed her no time to ponder, grabbing Airel’s hands excitedly, “Princess, I deeply regret not embracing your ideas sooner. I regret the resources and manpower the nation has wasted. Yet, to be able to change all that before my imminent death gives me great satisfaction.

“Rest assured, we shall meet again soon—I promise!”

The blue-black veins on his face became even more pronounced, spreading across his skin like a spiderweb.

After uttering these words, his body rapidly cracked and then disintegrated into ashes before Airel’s eyes.

Airel’s eyes widened in horror, as she stared unbelievingly at the ashes on the ground.

Dead? Just like that, gone without explanation?

Hidden to one side, Amberser carefully watched Airel’s reaction. The bewildered girl stood motionless for several minutes, then cautiously gathered the ashes from the ground, even going so far as to dig up and collect the soil beneath them.

Airel didn’t make a scene with the Druids; instead, she clutched the ashes tensely and quickly departed with her entourage.

Watching Airel’s retreating figure, Amberser finally let out a sigh of relief.

There were many flaws in his performance, but as long as Airel hadn’t realized that he was an impostor, they would probably rationalize all the discrepancies.

After all, those ashes were real, and no test could reveal any issues with them.

The only potential snag could be the Lord of the Storm.

Although Airel might seek assistance from the Deity, Monger Greyriver was not a devout believer and would have likely gone straight to Hell. Without his Soul in the Deity’s Divine Realm, tracing him wouldn’t be simple, and the Lord of the Storm wouldn’t bother making deals with those Lords in Hell over such a trivial matter.

Everything was in place; it was time to leave the Emerald Dream Forest and embark on this journey through time.
