Thirteenth Lady's Comback: Her Everyday Life as a Bystander-Chapter 163 - 7: Visiting the Huang Family (Part 2)
Yang Liu took Susu’s hand and led her inside. "Let’s meet our Old Madam and Mrs. Huang first!" Susu curbed the anxious look on her face, calmed herself, and followed Yang Liu into the room.
Behind them, Nanny Zhou and others quietly listened to the two reminisce. Upon hearing Susu mention asking the Old Madam of Bo Mansion to summon the Imperial Physician for her, they all had different expressions. Especially Nanny Zhou and Aunt Han.
Upon hearing this, Nanny Zhou realized that this Miss Su was definitely not just an ordinary maid, as she talked about inviting the Imperial Physician too casually, as if calling for a physician was no big deal.
When Aunt Han heard this, she secretly raised her eyebrows, a contemptuous smile curled at the corners of her mouth, unlike her usually non-attacking demeanor. But the expression was fleeting, and since her head was lowered again, no one noticed.
Entering the main room, it was divided into three brightly lit and two dim areas, the middle being a living room. Upon entering was a nanmu wood and primrose-colored Kesi and glass four-panel screen. Bypassing the screen revealed a Zitan wood-carved cloud and bat Arhat Couch in the center, upon which sat an elderly lady with gray hair yet remarkably spirited.
This elderly lady was around sixty years old, with her gray hair styled in a round bun, adorned with flowered headpieces, wearing a bean green floral and silver-gray edge floral satin button-up jacket, revealing the ivory-colored inner attire’s cross collar. Beneath was a brown-green cloud pattern embroidered satin skirt paired with a horse face skirt. Susu amusingly thought that though the outfit was ornate, it was somewhat too ostentatious.
Below the Arhat Couch was a row of twelve Zitan wood armchairs, each pair with a matching small table. On the leftmost seat sat a woman wearing an imperial consort color lined with floral-pattern satin button-up jacket, white inner attire, and a cinnabar peony embroidered horse face skirt.
Given the seat placement, it was likely Yang Liu’s mother-in-law — Mrs. Huang. Judging by age, she should be about the same as Aunt Han, but her expression was sorrowful, making her appear ten years older at least. What could be the reason?
Susu discreetly glanced at Yang Liu, saw her slightly shake her head, and turned her gaze to the rightmost seat. There sat a petite and charming young girl, likely fourteen or fifteen, with two jade lotus hairpins holding a delicate bun, wearing a pink-purple small eight treasure threaded gauze top, with a moon-white ground filled bamboo embroidered skirt beneath, and a bean-green palace sash at her waist.
No word about a girl from the Huang Family, who could she be?
This observation happened in a mere moment. The crowd only saw Yang Liu pulling in a young lady, whose demeanor compelled them to show her due respect. Upon seeing her face, everyone — whether masters or maids — inhaled sharply, convinced they weren’t being judgmental after realizing such a distinguished person existed.
Having regained composure, they could clearly see Susu’s attire. This sight made them hold her in high regard.
Though Susu was a guest at the Huang family, different from her visit to Mrs. Zhao’s, today she was here to honor Yang Liu. After all, there’s a saying, "First admire the clothes, then the person," so she dressed splendidly.
Susu styled her hair in a formal lily bun, with a red gold Buddha hand with pearls hair band in the middle, a gilded gold phoenix hairpin on the left, and several fingernail-sized red coral carved rose flowers on the right.
She wore a light purple blouse embroidered with a cluster of orchids on the hem, paired with an apricot-white pleated skirt with ruyi cloud-pattern edges, a goose yellow silk sash at her waist, a light green pocket hanging on the left, and on the right a Mutton Fat Jade with red coral butterflies playing with peonies jade pendant.
Yang Liu led Susu forward, smiled, and said, "Grandmother, this is Susu." She then turned to Susu, "This is my great-grandmother!" Susu bowed in respect, but Old Mrs. Huang quickly stopped her, pulling Susu to sit beside her, "I’ve lived most of my life, only now realizing such a distinguished person exists in the world." 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮
She then looked at Yang Liu and smiled, "You should have called your sister to visit sooner; no wonder the Old Madam of Bo Mansion likes her so much. Such a dear one, who wouldn’t like her!" She said, removing a fine Mutton Fat Jade Bracelet from her wrist and placing it on Susu’s, a pause upon seeing the Glass-type Fu Lu Shou Three-color Imperial Bracelet on her wrist, her heart admiring even more.
Yang Liu pretended to be jealous, "I knew as soon as my sister arrives, Grandmother wouldn’t like me anymore. Seems like my efforts are in vain." Upon seeing Susu, Yang Liu felt a lightness in her body and playfully reverted making Old Mrs. Huang laugh as she affectionately tapped Yang Liu on the shoulder, "I like you too, love you both equally."
