The Young Miss Refuse To Love-Chapter 124: Who did you offend?
Chapter 124: Who did you offend?
While Qi Jianyi seriously gave advice to Wen Renyue on a part where he could improvise, Wen Renyue, on the opposite side, was stunned. It was his first time in eight years receiving such detailed and thoughtful guidance.
Qi Jianyi was different from other directors or screenwriters who typically brushed him off, leaving him to figure out his character on his own. Even when he sought to learn from more experienced actors, they would often sneer at him, belittling his efforts. "With your little side character, is there even anything worth learning?" they’d say dismissively. After all, he wasn’t the main character.
In the end, Wen Renyue had no choice but to study his scripts by himself. He poured over them, dissecting every line and imagining every nuance. Yet, no matter how much he improved, the results were always the same. His scenes would be cut, leaving him with only two or three fleeting moments of screen time.
This time, however, was different. For once, he wasn’t met with the usual dismissal or indifference. Instead, the writer of this drama took the time to explain everything to him, breaking down the character’s emotions and motivations.
Not only that, but she even pointed out specific areas where he could improvise, encouraging him to enhance his portrayal.
The kindness and professionalism Qi Jianyi showed were overwhelming. Wen Renyue’s nose stung, and he struggled to hold back tears. It wasn’t just the advice that moved him but the simple act of being seen and valued. After years of feeling invisible, this moment meant everything to him.
He was deeply grateful. Even if he wasn’t chosen for the role in the end, he would still cherish this experience. For the first time, he felt like he had genuinely learned something meaningful during an audition.
"I understand. Miss Yi, thank you for teaching me," he said sincerely and bowed in her direction.
Qi Jianyi was taken aback by his sudden action but accepted it. He was humble and willing to be taught, unlike other actors who disliked being instructed by writers. They often believed that only directors and senior actors had the authority to guide them, as if the writer, who created the script, was unqualified.
"Mr. Wen, I just gave a little advice because I like your acting. If there’s no problem, you will probably get this role. But before that, I have one personal question for you," she said without hesitation, seamlessly shifting the conversation.
Hearing that he had a chance to become the male lead, Wen Renyue did not hesitate to nod, indicating his readiness to answer her question.
"Miss Yi, please ask. I’ll try my best to answer your question," he replied calmly.
Qi Jianyi took a moment before voicing the question that had been playing in her mind ever since Wen Renyue began his performance. "Then, I will not sugarcoat my words. Mr. Wen, who did you offend?"
She stared straight at him, carefully observing his reaction. As she expected, Wen Renyue failed to mask his expression. His eyes widened, and his demeanor became visibly nervous.
In that moment, Wen Renyue felt his chance to be the male lead slipping away.
He didn’t reply immediately, and Qi Jianyi allowed him the time he needed. She waited patiently, understanding that the topic might be difficult for him to discuss. However, no matter how personal it was, she had to ask.
She couldn’t cast him without knowing who he had offended. What if the man who appeared so honest before her was, in reality, a sexual offender? Wouldn’t he tarnish her drama then?
She refused to work with anyone who carried a significant scandal that was proven true in their past. People’s greed knew no bounds. When they saw someone they despised gaining love and recognition, they would undoubtedly spread harmful rumors to destroy that person. Ultimately, her drama would be dragged into their conflict.
After a while, Wen Renyue opened his mouth, hesitated for a moment, but decided to bite the bullet and confess.
"I offended the actor Su Yunfei when I first started my acting career," he said, his voice almost inaudible.
Hearing the unfamiliar name, Qi Jianyi tilted her head. "Who?" she asked, prompting him to elaborate.
She didn’t forget to glance at Song Chengfeng, thinking there was a slight chance he might know since this man often watched romance dramas to satisfy his boredom.
Understanding her unspoken question, Song Chengfeng shrugged. "I just watch them. I have no interest in the actors," he replied perfunctorily.
While the two debated over who Su Yunfei was, Wen Renyue, on the other hand, was left speechless.
The A-list actor Su Yunfei was a household name, having received countless awards and starred in numerous big dramas and blockbuster movies. None of his projects had ever flopped, and he was renowned as a versatile actor.
It was only fitting to say that he was the nation’s first love, adored by the younger generation—from teenagers to young adults. Everyone seemed to like him.
Not to mention, the entire industry respected him. Unfortunately, Wen Renyue had offended him once, and because of that, he was shunned by many who feared getting on Su Yunfei’s bad side.
Therefore, hearing Qi Jianyi’s clueless question left him dumbfounded. But what could he explain to her? It was understandable for Qi Jianyi not to know who Su Yunfei was since she was not from this world and paid little attention to the entertainment industry. She even left most matters to He Zeqing to handle.
In fact, it would be more shocking if Song Chengfeng recognized Su Yunfei. After all, this man only had Qi Jianyi in his eyes. Would he really have the time to remember some actor’s name?
"Miss Yi, actor Su Yunfei is the one who just won the Best Actor of the Year award last year. He has won countless awards and is respected by many," Wen Renyue explained, realizing that Qi Jianyi might truly not know who Su Yunfei was. Despite his lingering doubts, he composed himself and provided the information.
Qi Jianyi nodded at his explanation but then realized he couldn’t see her gesture. She quickly followed up, "If he is someone you cannot reach, how could you have offended him?" she asked, voicing her skepticism.
Wen Renyue hesitated again, but in the end, he relented. "It was...a misunderstanding," he began carefully. "I was young and didn’t know many of the rules on set. I accidentally spilled coffee on the clothes he was supposed to wear later. But for some reason, his assistant began to yell at me and accused me of trying to sabotage him by putting laxatives in his drink."
Thinking back to the humiliation he endured, Wen Renyue lowered his head in shame, his voice tinged with lingering bitterness.
Hearing his questionable answers, Qi Jianyi frowned deeply. Wen Renyue’s account didn’t add up at all. How could accidentally spilling a drink escalate into an accusation of tampering with someone’s beverage by adding laxatives? The disparity was jarring, and it didn’t sit well with her.
"What happened after that?" she asked, her tone laced with both curiosity and a hint of skepticism.
There were too many gaps in the story, and she knew she wouldn’t be able to uncover the truth on her own. This seemed like the kind of murky situation best left to He Zeqing. She made a mental note to ask her cousin to investigate further.
Wen Renyue’s expression softened slightly as he continued, his voice steadier now, though tinged with lingering bitterness.
"The assistant insisted on suing me, but the director at the time intervened and begged actor Su to settle it there," he explained.
Qi Jianyi tilted her head thoughtfully. "So, you were thrown out of that project? And since then, no one has been willing to give you a significant role?"
The more she pieced together his story, the more skeptical she grew. Based on everything she’d heard, it seemed like Su Yunfei himself played only a minimal role in the fallout.
The assistant, however, stood out as a key figure in the situation—a thread that needed pulling.
"Did actor Su ever say anything to you directly?" she pressed, her curiosity sharpening.
Wen Renyue hesitated. Finally, he shook his head, his voice quiet but resolute. "No, actor Su never addressed me personally. He left everything to his assistant to handle."
Qi Jianyi’s frown deepened as a wave of confusion washed over her. The absence of direct involvement from Su Yunfei only added to the enigma. How could such a minor incident—one that the actor himself barely acknowledged—spiral into a career-stalling scandal for Wen Renyue?
The puzzle pieces simply didn’t fit together, and she found herself more determined than ever to get to the bottom of it.
"I understand. I will discuss this with the director, and we will let you know the result soon. Mr. Wen, thank you for your time. I hope you will continue giving your best effort." Qi Jianyi concluded the conversation with a composed tone, her professional demeanor masking the storm of thoughts brewing in her mind.
She had decided to drop the topic for now, sensing that Wen Renyue himself wasn’t entirely aware of the larger picture. He believed that Su Yunfei was the source of his misfortune.
Not knowing that he might’ve actually offended someone else. And that person might have orchestrated this, using Su Yunfei as a convenient scapegoat to veil their own malicious intentions.
As she watched Wen Renyue bow politely and exit the room, Qi Jianyi’s expression remained calm, though her thoughts lingered on the mystery. Who could have such audacity? And what motive would they have to ruin Wen Renyue’s career which was in its infancy?
She made a mental note to task He Zeqing with digging deeper into this. There was more to this story than met the eye, and if Wen Renyue’s potential was as promising as it seemed, Qi Jianyi wasn’t one to let a hidden hand dictate her cast.
With a soft sigh, she glanced at Song Chengfeng, who had been silently observing the exchange with a raised brow.
"This industry always seems to have their own dramas, don’t they?" he remarked, his voice laced with curiosity, as if he found it both perplexing and fascinating.
Qi Jianyi raised an eyebrow at him. "You can never underestimate people’s greed," she said. "Especially those who chase fame."
