Chapter 95: To Travel The Chaotic Lands (7)

Saving everyone was an ideal concept, but it was ultimately impossible. Khal’s job was to deal with monsters and raid dungeons. Logically speaking, doing that was enough to say he was already saving a lot of people from potential danger.

However, humans were like that. People tend to glorify the powerful, and as a result of that, they also hope for too much from them.

Hence, the saying, power comes with great responsibility. In a way, that was true. In some instances, this responsibility also became a significant burden.

One could save millions of people, and they would treat him as a hero. And once that hero failed just one mission to save a few hundred, then resentment would begin to boil against him.

It was very contradictory and also tedious.

Khal had experienced the same thing. He never meant to be a saint or a hero, but he was at least open to saving more civilians from danger.

Since he was more reclusive than others, he never really publicized his actions. Khal had gone from being enthusiastic about saving people to being cold enough to kill them without batting an eyelid.

"It’s the day the SS-class monsters invaded a green zone." From Khal’s memory, it was still fresh.

Not because it was a very traumatic incident for everyone, but also because it was the day he actually got to know Devion from a deeper standpoint.

It was not that they became friends immediately, but that they began to open up to the possibility of fighting alongside each other.

Devion’s eyes also glimmered from the memory; he silently leaned towards Khal and let him knead the back of his neck. He lifted his gaze and met Ayen’s, giving him a small smile.

Ayen also tried to remember that event. It was probably about fifteen years ago, before Devion and Khal were officially announced as two SS-class espers.

He was merely twelve years old at that time. His life at the Nevaris Clan was still stable, and so he also heard that news. After all, most of the clan espers also began to mobilize to help the frontlines.

Khal did not elaborate much about the events. Probably wary of the place they were in, or that he did not feel like telling the story in one go. Or the combination of both.

"The monsters were different from what we’ve been used to."

"They are also very intelligent," Devion chimed in.

"Right." Khal nodded. "They knew how to strategize. Within a few moments, they managed to control a large area of the city."

It had to be known that green zones were established as one because of their stable location and the higher security they possessed. It would not be easily breached; even if it were, the espers would easily arrive for reinforcements.

For Khal and Devion, at that time, they were actually just amateurs. Though they were aware that they might be different from other S-class espers, they were still just 19-year-olds about to become 20-year-old teenagers.

They did not have experience. They had not yet mastered their abilities. It was far too different from their current selves.

Fighting one SS-class monster might be doable, but too many would be a stretch. Khal knew he would not be able to defeat as many monsters before all of the citizens were killed or devoured.

So, he chose to save as many as possible before then. Khal also knew that it was impossible to save all of them. Khal did not waste time thinking too much and immediately went to his plan.

"I chose not to engage with the monsters. My priority was to save the citizens."

While Khal’s tone and voice made it seem casual, Ayen knew how much harder it was to save people than to fight the monsters. After all, Khal would still need to evacuate and escort them to a safe place as he also fought monsters along the way.

It was not that all of the monsters were at SS-class; they still had a lot of lower-level monsters as subordinates. But the majority of them were in A class, with some in S-class.

The difficulty was like ascending to the heavens. It was not an exaggeration at all. Yet, Khal did not give up. While most of the espers were distracted and fighting the monsters, Khal was transporting citizens in batches.

In one batch were thousands of people. However, in a green zone with a population of 30 million people, it was actually just a slight portion.

Khal would not be able to do more than that. His speed was astonishing; he created a mobile ice bridge, and he manipulated it as he went from different places.

The people would then come up from there and be distributed to the other end. His mana was spent making sure the ice bridge was stable and that it protected the people inside it.

He himself was fighting monsters on the ground.

With this alone, Khal had managed to save more than 10 million people at once. That was an amazing feat, considering the whole city was in chaos.

Khal did not stop there; he also went on from different directions and rescued people trapped in their homes. Overall, Khal saved almost half of the population of the city. That was millions of people.

By himself.

Doing this over and over spent most of his mana reserves. Remember, he did not have a guide by this time. He could only rest for a while and then went into action once more.

As he recounted this, Khal did not show obvious emotion. It was clear that he had already moved on and gone past this memory.

The same could not be said for Ayen, who was listening for the first time, and Devion, who was in the scene years ago.

One might think that the whole city would be prostrating at his feet for saving most of them. That should be the most obvious reaction.

Khal himself did not care about praise; he was only doing what his heart intended him to do.

Yet, why did some of them harbor resentment against him? To the point, in his exhaustion, someone tried to kill him?
