Chapter 257: Chapter 257

[SAMANTHA’s Point of View]

“Killian’s behind us?”

“Yes. He said he will bring his car,” Dominic answered. His eyes were on the road as he drove smoothly and fast on the outskirts of the Black Forest.

He and Killian both decided not to travel on foot through the forest because they believed that the Shadow Werewolves would easily track and detect them in the woods. At first, I thought that the idea of bringing a car was ridiculous. But they were right. It was the easiest and fastest way to get to Black Forest without being detected by the shadows of the Black Claws and the cursed wolves.

While staring at the road in front of us, I felt Dominic’s hand holding mine. I turned to look at him, checking if there was something wrong. But this face stayed serious and focused on the road while his other hand was tightly gripping the steering wheel.

Nervous and anxious about what was going on with Dominic, I still let him hold my hand. It made me wonder if he felt what I was feeling at that moment, but his face remained stoic. I had no idea what the silence was about, but the longer he held my hand, the less the heavy feelings in my chest bothered me.

The way he squeezed my hand somehow relaxed me.

“Do you think we can do this? Do you think we can sneak into their lair and save the child?” I asked Dominic as the thoughts started to put fears in my head again. “I am scared that once they find out we didn’t do what they asked us to do, they will kill the poor pup.”

“They won’t kill him, my love.” He gently pulled my hand up to his lips and kissed the back of it. “We will do everything to save him. I know you are worried about the child’s safety. Just know that I will do my very best to make sure we get him alive out of that place.”

My lips pulled into a slight smile as I stared at my husband’s handsome face. I couldn’t deny that I love that man with every fiber of my being, but he was also the only man who could annoy the hell out of me.

“Are we too far yet?” I asked him, and he lowered my hand. He didn’t let go of it, though. It was as if he was craving the warmth of my skin.

The thought of him wanting to feel me made my face flush, and I decided to pull my hands from him, which made him a bit flustered and confused if he had done something wrong.

“Did I say something?” he worriedly asked as he looked at me and then back to the road, with his brows arching.

“No. Don’t worry too much about it.” I made a tight smile and then bit my lower lip as I averted my eyes from him and stared outside the window, trying to avoid any more conversation that might end up in another heated argument.

I heard Dominic sigh, and he didn’t say anything anymore, which made me a little sad. I knew it was childish of me to wish for him to give me more reassuring words, but I understood that it was better to stay silent than say things that we might regret afterward.

“Dominic.”

It was Killian’s voice on the coms. Dominic’s eyes went sharp in an instant as he heard the MoonStone Alpha’s voice.

“What’s going on, Killian?” My husband answered in his stoic tone, making me stare at him. He knew that I didn’t like how he behaved, so he sighed and then tilted his head to the side, trying to relax his shoulder. He changed the tone of his voice as he asked again. “Did you see anything that is following us from behind?”

“Negative. The tracks are clear and the plan is working.” Killian answered, but there was tension in his voice. “I don’t know. I feel uncomfortable about it right now.”

“What do you mean?” I frowned as I asked him. I sat in the passenger seat with my back straight and spoke clearly as I answered him on the intercom. “What is it that is bothering you right now, Killian? Do you think the Black Claws know it is us?”

“It’s just an instinct, I guess?” he replied, his voice lower this time as if he were anxious. “My wolf is telling me we have to hide our car and set out on foot as soon as we get to the place near the Wolf Tomb. I have a feeling they wouldn’t be able to sense us if we travel northeast.”

“Are you sure about that?” It was Dominic who responded this time. He was skeptical about the plan, but he learned to trust Killian after I asked him how many times Killian had only wanted to help us.

“Yes. I know we can’t risk being seen. We can’t let them kill the child.” Killian answered with an adamant tone in his voice.

“Thank you, Killian. We will go to the northeast as you instructed.” I said, and then the conversation ended.

My heart was racing in my chest.

I didn’t know, but something felt wrong. I briefly considered whether I had forgotten something before we left the Pack Manor, but Dominic ensured that we both had everything we needed for this mission. I even checked the kids in their room before we left, and they were both sleeping so soundly in their beds as I kissed their foreheads goodbye.

Maybe I was just paranoid. Maybe I was too scared to leave the kids. We couldn’t afford to make any mistakes tonight when we got to the den of those evil men who took the child. We had to bring the poor kid inside Silver Crescent and make sure he wouldn’t get hurt in this operation.

I closed my eyes and prayed once again for the Moon Goddess to guide us. Help us in this fight; we are all going to face our enemies.

To my horror, Dominic suddenly stopped the car, and I almost hit my face on the dashboard. I was so angry I was about to yell at him, but then I noticed that his face turned pale and wary while he glared at something in front of us.

“What is it?!”

“Stay here!” He snarled at me as he unbuckled his seatbelt and then opened the door.

When I lifted my face to check what was happening, I saw ten shadow werewolves blocking our way to the border of the Black Forest.

They knew we were coming!

“Dominic, wait!”

But Dominic was already in front of the car, facing the shadow werewolves in front of us. I watched Killian stop his car behind us and step out of the driver’s seat as he checked on me.

When he saw me still inside the car, I saw a relief on his face. He immediately joined Dominic and stood in front of the car protectively.

My heart was like thunder in my chest. The enemies knew! They knew we were coming, and I was so terrified for the life of that poor child in the hands of the Black Claws.

“Dominic!”

“Stay inside, Samantha!” he roared as he raised his hand protectively, “Let me and Killian deal with this!”

“I can fight!” I snarled back at him.

“Listen to him, Sam!” It was Killian who bared his teeth at me, and I was surprised at that reaction on his face. I got confused at first about what was happening. But when I looked at the enemies in front of us, that’s when I noticed something was different about them. Their eyes were deep purple, swirling and dark, like they were possessed by something so evil that the hairs on my nape stood in horror.

They weren’t ordinary shadow werewolves. They were enhanced soldiers who possessed greater power from the curse.

But when I was about to step out of the car to join them, I heard something strange coming from the hood. Panic struck in my heart as I rushed towards it, and Dominic watched me, looking alarmed at the paranoia in my head.

And all the fears that formed in my mind, unfortunately, were true.

With wide eyes, I stared at my kids curling themselves into a ball so they could fit inside the hood of the car. At first, I didn’t know what to feel. My mind turned so blank and confused, trying to convince myself I was just having a bad dream, but no. It was Diana and Devon, who were both staring back at me, looking scared but smiling awkwardly, knowing they were in so much trouble.

“Uhh... Hi, Mom.” Devon whispered between his smile that turned into a wince.

“Our wolf says you will need us,” Diana explained, her brows arched as she tried to keep her voice from cracking in front of me. She was obviously scared that I would yell at both of them, and I wanted to, but I was too shocked to do it.

“Samantha, what are you doing there?”

I turned to my husband, and I saw how his shoulders drooped the second he saw our twins. That expression on his face, the fear and the disappointment—I understood that feeling very well.

“I-I think this is all my fault,” I said to my husband, still unable to believe that the kids were here with us. “I should have checked them...”

“Mom?”

Devon’s worried and scared voice distracted me from the shock. I looked at him, confused, and I didn’t know what to say.

“It’s okay, buddy.” Killian stepped towards us, leaving Dominic in front of the shadow werewolves snarling at my husband. “I am just glad that you and Diana are safe.”

Despite Killian trying to make the situation a little lighter, Dominic’s face darkened as he glanced at me and the kids. He didn’t say anything, but I knew he would never continue the mission while the kids were with us.

We had no time to get back to Silver Crescent anymore.
