The Werewolf King's Bride-Chapter 491: Let Us Play A Game
(From Ruby’s Perspective)
I watched in horror as the assassin’s body was dismembered by some kind of black smoke. There was an odd burning smell in the air. But that was the least of the concerns.
Tonight, all sorts of odd things happened. I was suddenly summoned to the palace by the Queen and she just showed herself in the crowd, even though the plan had been to keep her away until it was safe for her to return.
I saw a black dragon appearing out of thin air, black snake-like strings crawling on the walls and floor of the courtroom, a different appearance of Her Highness, an assassin trying to kill her, and some kind of black smoke dismembering the assassin’s body. Why did she suddenly show her power? Why did she become the kind of person I never thought she could be?
The Queen smiled. I did not know what to make of it. To be honest, she scared me. Out of all of us, Perita was the only one who seemed to be too cheerful and back to her old self. It was like she always knew what Her Highness was capable of. She had said it so many times to me and Calix, but we never thought it to be actually true.
I knew Her Highness was powerful; Luc said so many times. But I had never seen, this kind of power before.
Did Luc know? Did His Highness know? Hell, did even King Ford know? Did anyone know?
"Someone, clean up this mess," she said. Her voice was almost… bored. She glanced back at us. "Follow me."
Where did the gentlewoman I knew go? I almost blurted out, "What happened to you, Your Highness?"
We followed her in silence. Only Perita talked. She said how cool it had been. Her Highness did not say anything.
Perita opened the door of her office and we followed Her Highness inside. As soon as we were in, she motioned for Perita to close the door. Perita closed it. And before we knew it, Her Highness ran to the bathroom and from what I heard, it seemed like she was throwing up.
’Ah…’
Calix looked at me as if he was also thinking the same thing as me. What the hell was going on? Flint looked very bad. I had seen him looking miserable as he always was that way, but not like this. Tonight, he looked worse than ever.
Her Highness came back after a while, wiping her mouth with a towel. She looked… more like herself, not like the person I had seen earlier.
"Your Highness, that…," Calix started. "Why did you expose your identity?"
"It was time I should do it," she said. "I have wasted enough time. I should not have gone into hiding in the first place. That was a mistake. In hiding or not, I would always be a target. I just should have faced these things from the beginning.
There would have been no attack in the mansion, at least, not a surprised attack, is that not right, Flint?"
"Flint?" I repeated. I looked at Flint in shock. He had his head bent. What did he do? Did he betray us?
"Flint, no way…," Calix muttered. "It was you! You betrayed us!"
Calix almost jumped on him, but Her Highness raised her hand and he stopped in his track. She slowly advanced towards Flint. Flint did not move away, not even when she touched his chin and made him look at her.
"Why?" she asked, her voice cold, as she was trying to hide how hurt she was. "Why did you do it?"

"… I am sorry that I had to do it," he said. "But I am not sorry that I did it."
I wanted to smack him hard. What was he saying? What did he mean by that?
"I asked why, Flint. Answer me," she said.
"They threatened me."
"Who?"
"… The master of the magic tower of Mazazine," he replied. "They took my daughter away and threatened my wife to send me a letter. That’s why I had to leave the mansion… I needed to save my daughter."
"You gave away our location and our plan?" I asked.
"… I had to," he said, not looking at me, but Her Highness. "But you are alive, Your Highness! I would not have let them kill you, no matter what I said to them."
"What did they want to do, Flint? They would not kill me. They wanted me alive," she said.
Flint just nodded once.
*slap*
Flint did not move even when Her Highness’s palm struck his face. It was like he knew he deserved it.
"I trusted you," she mumbled.
"Your Highness, what would you have done if it was your child?" he asked in a murmur.
The question did not faze the Queen. She simply smiled a little. "I would have saved my child without a doubt. I would choose my child above everything and everyone," she said. "But Flint, I am a Queen. I serve no one.
No matter what choice I make, there is no one to punish me. I will face nothing, but you will. And nothing can change that. Not even the fact that I loved you. I loved all of you like my family. I thought we were family.
But Dem was right. He had always been right."
During the long nights when we could not sleep, Luc would tell me stories of his childhood. In most of the stories, His Highness was there. They were childhood friends, best of friends.
Not all people could see their friendship at first glance because of their odd natures, however, they were still best friends; in danger, they would come for each other no matter what, they would support each other from the back and they were a family. Luc said His Highness had always been very gloomy and someone who could not trust people.
For seven years, his mind had been controlled by none other than his own mother. I could not bear to think of what it might have made him.
I never thought Flint would betray us. Her Highness’s brother, Cyan, was who I suspected to be the traitor. It turned out to be Flint all along.
How did Her Highness find out about it? How did she feel when she heard it? I had seen her treating Flint sometimes like her brother, sometimes like her son. Despite her age, she always acted like she was scolding her son who misbehaved whenever Flint lost his temper or did something childish.
"It gets better when you get used to it," Luc’s voice echoed in my mind.
"Who betrayed you?" I had asked.
"I lost count. You cannot take vengeance for every betrayal, but you certainly can learn a new lesson. The first and foremost is- get used to it, trust no one but the ones you can give your life for, and give your life for only the ones who can give their life for you."
"That was really…," Calix muttered.
"Should I take him to the dungeon, Your Highness?" Perita asked.
