Chapter 581: Farewell

"I will be going back to my mother’s homeland. There isn’t a successor to the throne from the direct line." Alfonso suddenly mentioned.

Abrielle was not expecting it the slightest. "Congratulations, that’s truly unexpected." She blurted.

Alfonso nodded, "I would have invited you to the wedding, but I know your hands will be full." He added leaving Abrielle more stunned.

He only laughed. It wasn’t a marriage of love but pure convenience. Alfonso knew this was the best decision for him..

"I wish you a happy life but why go there to fight for the throne..." She could not help but ask. His gaze dulled. Alfonso spun her around according to the melody before holding each other again.

"I am happy you and Cedric are finally working out. It felt right. The current king is very ill and doesn’t have any heirs. My mother was his only sibling..." He explained lost a bit in his thoughts before he added

"I know I should not say this but I can’t watch Abrielle... knowing you are happy and it isn’t me...." He finally said. Her brain seemed to have frozen because she wasn’t expecting it.

"I know I should not have fallen for my brother’s wife but it happened...this is for the best." He finally added. The music ended. Alfonso placed a kiss on her hand...

"My carriage leaves tonight. Farewell empress Abrielle." His lips brushed her skin, and Alfonso’s fingers felt reluctant to let go.

"Alfonso," Cedric called out from behind Abrielle before holding her waist. His gaze was sharp; he recognised the look in his eyes. "I was just saying farewell. I wish you a happy rule brother." He said on a final note before walking away. His figure disappeared in the crowd.

"Did anything happen?" Cedric asked Abrielle. She shook her head. "Nothing." She blurted. From the corner of her eyes, she could spot Silvanius speaking with Pierre and Rebecca

It was made public now that Abrielle was the princess of Heliosa but the Nightshade will always be Abrielle’s first family

Rebecca felt her gaze and smiled at her. Abrielle returned the smile before walking towards them.

At another corner of the ballroom, Evelyn was observing the celebration. She hasn’t been in the social circle for years because of her identity as an unrecognised illegitimate daughter, despite being of noble blood.

Everyone seemed happy. Axel was talking with Curtis, the third in command of the shadow knights. While being surrounded by some nobles

Axel was from a simple background but he had made a lot of merits as a knight. She, on the other hand, was just a woman in their eyes, disregarding all her battles. She served as an assassin not a knight

She didn’t hate her duties. It felt lonesome knowing that because you work in darkness, no one will ever know your sacrifices. A soft laugh caught her attention, her eyes immediately fell on Elias.

He was the son of a noble, and his looks were naturally attractive to noble ladies. Her brows twitched, Elias was granted a title by Cedric for his contribution which he readily accepted

He had a lot of elder brothers and never had the chance to inherit his father’s title. Evelyn was also granted a title and land, something rare to be given to a woman. She was still considering the offer.

She sighed then found her way out of the ballroom. The night breeze was cold since it was the middle of winter. Her blonde hair danced with the wind while she listened to its silent sound.

She should be happy but didn’t understand why she felt heavy on the inside. "The storm has finally passed." She muttered, gripping the balcony’s rail.

"Then what’s stopping you..." She heard someone say from behind her. Her head snapped back to the entrance of the balcony.

"Elias," she gasped, staring back at his hazel eyes. "What are you doing here?" She blurted. Elias walked up to her, his gaze unwavering.

"Why did you leave? Did you find it uncomfortable with me speaking to other ladies?" Elias was straightforward. Evelyn was startled, she didn’t know what to reply.

"What nonsense are you talking about?" She managed to say. Elias laughed, she was truly stubborn.

"It’s nonsense indeed...I just wanted to know." He paused, and Evelyn felt her breath was stuck in her throat. "What is stopping us?" He asked and the world suddenly faded. She could not hold his gaze.

"Elias..." She whispered. He drew in a breath

"I love you, Evelyn. You know that and I know you share the same feelings. Why do you keep running?" He asked. He has noticed her the entire time at the ball.

He couldn’t stay still. Elias was being arranged for an engagement soon. This was his last chance

Evelyn didn’t even know what to say. She held her dress about to flee the balcony. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

Elias ran after she held her arm. "Cassandra stop." He called her by her name. "Aren’t you tired of hiding in the shadows? Please let’s stop hurting each other and giving nonexistent excuses." He pleaded

She shook her head and tried to shrug him off, but his hold only tightened. "Elias I don’t know. I’m older than you..." She whimpered, tears hiding in her eyes

"I know. I always knew Evelyn before I fell for you." He repeated, then slowly went on one knee. Her heart started to race, he wasn’t going to propose to her, was he?

To her biggest shock, Elias brought out the velvet box he had presented before her. "I never cared about the 6-year gap. So what if you are older it doesn’t change a thing..." He explained

"I know you are the one I want to spend my life with, Cassandra. Please do me the honour of being my wife." His voice was gentle, her heart squeezed and the tears rolled down.

They weren’t lovers. They weren’t even friends, but they had known each other for years. Being through hardship together

She knew when she started having feelings for him but hid it. During their last battle, she was scared of losing him, but now she is too much of a coward to accept him.

"I don’t know what to say." She cried. Elias smiled then reached out for her hand. He slid the ring on her finger. "Just say yes..." He chimed.

Her knees buckled and she fell into his arms, crying. She was so happy that the tears didn’t stop. "Yes... Elias."
