Chapter 32: Class Division Exam [24]

The sky over the Southern Forest of Grisha was dull and grey. A few golden rays of sunlight peeked through the mist, falling softly on the ground where leaves crunched under the boots of nervous students.

All 197 first-year students stood near the dungeon entrance. The two missing students were not there. And neither was Dorian Valen, the one who had been suspended.

The dungeon’s entrance looked like the open mouth of a giant stone creature, quiet but frightening.

Most of the students wore the same basic training robes. Some were whispering to their friends, planning how they’d face the challenge. Others stood alone, pretending not to be scared.

Everyone knew this day could change their life at the academy.

This dungeon wasn’t a normal one. It didn’t have real monsters—it created fake ones using magic. That way, students could fight without dying or getting badly hurt.

Still, it was dangerous. Especially because the dungeon was in the Southern Forest of Grisha, a place filled with magical beasts and secrets.

The City Guards stood all around, watching. Their job was to keep the students safe from anything outside the dungeon.

But they didn’t know that something was already wrong.

Somewhere, inside the forest, was a person no one expected to return.

Dorian Valen.

And deep inside the academy, hiding behind a smile, was a traitor.

No one knew who they were.

Not yet.

A tall woman in a dark coat stepped forward from the group of staff. Her silver-blonde hair glinted softly under the pale light. With calm steps, Professor Valerys de Cresent, the first-year homeroom teacher and exam overseer, raised a hand.

The murmurs died down.

Her voice, quiet but firm, carried across the field.

> "You all stand here today, not just to show your strength... but to show your worth."

She looked at each face with the sharpness of someone who missed nothing.

> "This dungeon will test your instincts. Your teamwork. Your choices."

She paused, eyes scanning the group again.

> "You are not expected to defeat every monster. You are expected to survive. Think, act, protect yourselves and your teammates. That is how you’ll be judged."

A few nobles yawned quietly, unimpressed. They already knew how to fight. They had been trained by private tutors and family knights since they could walk.

But Valerys continued, as if ignoring their arrogance.

> "Commoners, nobles... I don’t care where you’re from. If you’re here, you’re meant to be here."

Her eyes narrowed.

> "Even if you don’t have strength—if you have wit, courage, or something different... you’ll pass."

Some students glanced at each other.

Others straightened up, more serious now.

In the back, near the trees, stood a girl with black hair tied in a tight braid and quiet eyes that held too much knowledge for her age.

Monica Croft.

She had heard these instructions before.

She had lived through this exact moment once in her previous life. freewebnσvel.cѳm

Just like Dorian Valen.

But this time, it felt different.

Her fingers gripped the edge of her sleeve as she watched the proud children of noble houses stepping up to the front, ready to show off.

She said nothing.

Instead, she looked toward the forest.

Toward the place where someone else might be watching too.

Professor Valerys took a step forward, her coat brushing the soft grass, as her voice echoed over the clearing.

> "Now—listen carefully. These are the rules of the Class Division Exam."

A quiet tension settled over the students.

> "You will enter in groups of five. You can choose your teammates, or be assigned randomly. Once inside, each team must gather three dungeon tokens and reach the central hall within two hours.

Each token is dropped by defeating a dungeon monster. The monsters are illusions—but they can hurt you. Just not fatally. Still, you’d be wise not to take them lightly."

Some students nodded confidently. Others were already whispering, calculating who to team up with.

Valerys continued.

> "You cannot steal tokens from other teams. However... nothing stops you from doing so either. There will be no disqualification for such acts—unless a student is critically injured.

Whether you use strength, speed, magic, or manipulation—if you can collect three tokens and reach the center, you pass."

A pause.

> "Fail to do so, and you’ll be assigned to Class D."

A quiet gasp came from the crowd. Everyone knew what that meant.

Class D was the lowest—underfunded, looked down upon, often ignored by teachers. For many, it was the start of a slow fall into obscurity.

Valerys raised a finger.

> "Final rule. There are no second chances. You succeed today, or you don’t."

The students looked at one another with growing unease. So simple... yet so cruel.

The strong would pass.

The clever would survive.

The unlucky would fall.

Yet, despite such rules, a few of them stood tall, and confident with their heads high, as if declaring their victory, even before the exam even started.

They had proper background to do so too.

After all, the Royal Knights’ Academy is a place where the heirs to all the important families gather to study, to connect, to negotiate and to fight.

It was a battleground where the fittest ones only survive.

The wind rustled softly through the trees. A few birds scattered, as if they too were wary of what was to come.

Monica Croft exhaled slowly.

She already knew how this would unfold.

The strong would charge forward, chasing monsters with loud roars and louder egos.

The cautious would hang back, waiting for opportunities to slip through unnoticed.

And a few... would try something else entirely.

She wasn’t here to win. Not yet.

She was here to observe.

Because she knew everything.

The bell rang.

A low, deep chime that echoed across the forest clearing.

Valerys turned slightly, giving the waiting faculty members a nod. A blue shimmer passed over the dungeon’s entrance, signaling that it was now open.

> "Group formation ends in five minutes," she announced. "Those who do not choose a team will be assigned randomly."

Immediately, the students burst into motion.

Voices rose.

Friends called out to each other, forming teams quickly. Nobles from the same houses grouped together without needing to speak.

Some tried to blend in with stronger-looking students.

Others looked around, eyes full of hesitation.

And some... stood alone.

Monica didn’t move.

She stayed near the edge of the crowd, watching.

She knew who would form teams and who would be left behind.

She even knew which combination of students would clash with each other mid-exam.

Because she had seen it all before.

Will things change this time though?

Or will the end result be the same this time too?

Only God knows the answer.

Valerys de Cresent stepped forward

"Well then, without further ado, let’s start the exam."
