Chapter 66: Chapter 66: The Virago’s First Heart Flutter

Thorne’s expression suddenly turned grim, his eyes dark and unreadable.

Elias Moretti squinted at the two of them and said coldly, "Gable will not be going to your tribe with you. Based on the little friendship you have with Thorne, why should the Grymdale Tribe get involved in this mess? That’s a plague! A curse!"

He was currently the acting leader of the Grymdale Tribe, so there was no way he would let Gable go with him.

Lachlan’s hollow eyes were like a long, boundless night.

He didn’t press the issue, however. He simply nodded, his voice ethereal. "Fine."

With that, he turned to leave, his voice carrying back over his shoulder. "Thorne, we’ve known each other for a while. Since you can’t get the Witch to perform the ritual, then promise me this: find Evangeline, and kill her."

Lachlan’s long, flaxen hair traced a cold arc through the air as he walked further and further away.

Thorne’s hand slowly clenched, his knuckles turning white. He watched the retreating figure, knowing in his heart this would be the last time he saw Lachlan.

’Killing Evangeline... that was once his heart’s desire. But not anymore.’

At this thought, he turned to look at the little maiden by his side, only to see her still staring in the direction Lachlan had gone, a thoughtful expression on her face. His long brows furrowed. "Flora?"

"Thorne, I have to help him," Evangeline said, looking up at Thorne with a serious expression.

’Of all her Beast Husbands, Lachlan might have been the only male the original owner truly liked.’

’Because she hadn’t stripped him of any prized possessions. The only thing she took was his eyes, and there was a story behind that.’

She had just been sorting through her memories and had finally learned how Lachlan and the original owner first met.

It was at a great tribal trading meet. Beast skins, pottery, hunted game, and salt stones were piled high as mountains.

The original owner was indeed The Virago, but she was also the most beautiful female in all of Norfell and the daughter of the tribe’s leader. Pampered and beautiful, she was born to a position others could only look up to. With her snow-white skin, red lips, and a coquettish glint in her eyes, she was the very picture of arrogance.

And it was then that Lachlan entered her sights.

The Oasis Tribe, having a Witch with healing abilities, was selling medicinal herbs. Lachlan’s Frost-plain Tribe, however, was located on a high plateau of snowy mountains where such herbs were scarce. He had made this trip specifically to trade for them.

Upon their first meeting, the original "Evangeline" was immediately captivated by this male who carried an air of frost and was as pure as ice and snow.

She was dressed in a fiery red Beast Skin Skirt, as vibrant as a blazing flame.

"Little maiden, how many Beast Cores for these?" His voice was ethereal and just as pleasant to the ear, like an ancient ballad carried on the wind during a tribal rite.

The original "Evangeline" was smitten and eagerly tried to converse with Lachlan, but he remained cool and indifferent.

Lachlan had a pair of crystal-clear eyes, so limpid they seemed like colored glass submerged in ice and snow, yet they reflected no one’s image.

But the more he was like this, the more the original "Evangeline" wanted him.

And what the spoiled little maiden set her eyes on, she would always obtain by any means necessary.

Just as the original "Evangeline" was trying to find a way to get closer to Lachlan, a cheerful female voice cut in. "Lachlan! Are you done buying? I want to go look at the beast skins!"

Immediately after, another female appeared by Lachlan’s side—an adolescent Snow Leopard female.

Lachlan chuckled softly. "Coming. What’s the rush?"

It was only then that the original "Evangeline" realized he wasn’t so cold to everyone. When his calm, clear eyes looked at the female beside him, they were unmistakably like melting snow!

It was the first time The Virago had ever been smitten, and she had met her Waterloo.

At that time, however, she still hadn’t thought of harming Lachlan himself. Instead, she chose to "harm" his tribespeople.

Using the Beast-mother’s hand, she had rotten beast bones buried at the source of their stream. Once the plague spread, she leveraged their tribe’s lack of medicinal herbs and The Beast-mother Seer’s healing abilities to propose a Contract with Lachlan.

For the sake of his tribe, Lachlan compromised.

That was the first time the original "Evangeline" had ever considered treating a Beast Husband well after forming a Contract.

But unfortunately, no matter how ardent she was, Lachlan remained distant, as if he couldn’t even see how beautiful she was.

To control Lachlan, the original "Evangeline" only provided the medicinal herbs and didn’t have the Beast-mother intervene. But on the Beastman Continent, a plague was seen as a curse. The herbs couldn’t alleviate their plight, and his tribespeople fell ill one after another.

The original "Evangeline’s" patience finally ran out when the now-adult Snow Leopard female came to the tribe.

Even though they were already Contracted, when Lachlan’s gaze fell upon the other female, it still held that familiar light.

Afterward, the original "Evangeline" gouged out Lachlan’s eyes.

She had thought, ’How could a pair of eyes like that be allowed to look at another female?’

Evangeline clicked her tongue. ’Isn’t this just a classic story of "if I can’t have you, no one can," followed by a total meltdown?’

After hearing Evangeline’s words, Thorne’s body went rigid. His dark green eyes stared intently at her, and his Adam’s apple bobbed several times before he finally squeezed out a few words. "Why? That’s a plague!"

Elias Moretti’s brows knitted together as well. "The plague is incurable! The Beastmen who catch it... even their bones will rot away! You’re carrying a cub right now, how can you be so reckless with your own life?"

Evangeline spoke with righteous conviction, her words sounding both cringey and sanctimonious. "Since I am the emissary of the Beast God, I cannot stand by and do nothing. Every life is worth fighting for."

’Of course, it was all talk. If she didn’t do something for Lachlan and the Frost-plain Tribe, they were all going to burn themselves to death!’

’If Lachlan died, the mission would fail. What would all her achievements up to this point count for then? Bragging rights?’

’Whether she was actually trying to win him over or not was beside the point; Lachlan’s life had to be saved.’

Thorne’s eyes darkened abruptly, suppressed anger and worry swirling in their depths.

After a long silence, he finally concealed his emotions and looked at her. "Fine. I’ll go with you to the Frost-plain Tribe. But if we can’t solve it, we leave immediately!"

"No!" Evangeline frowned. "You’re not a Witch. Do you think catching the plague is a joke?"

"You just stay here in the tribe and wait for me. Once I’ve handled things with Lachlan, I’ll come right back, okay?"

"Don’t forget, I’m the one who made it back from Thorncliff!"

"Besides, the rainy season is almost here. You need to hunt more, store up food, and wait for me to get back."

As she spoke, Evangeline suddenly rose onto her tiptoes and planted a kiss on Thorne’s tense lips. "Thorne, I promise. I’ll come back in one piece. I won’t get hurt, and I won’t catch the plague, all right?"

Thorne’s hands clenched into fists, his fingertips digging into his palms. His dark green eyes were filled with a savage light, and he remained silent for a long time.

Elias Moretti watched Evangeline placate Thorne as if no one else was there, and he suddenly let out a cold sneer. "Sometimes I really want to crack open that head of yours and see what’s inside."

Evangeline completely ignored him, acting as if he wasn’t even there.

After a long moment, all of Thorne’s turbulent emotions finally dissolved into a single, suppressed sigh.

He stared at Evangeline, his voice hoarse. "Come back soon. If you’re not back before the rainy season arrives, I’ll come to the Frost-plain Tribe to find you."

"Okay!" Evangeline’s lips curved into a brilliant smile.

Elias Moretti’s expression was icy, but he was suddenly aware of Evangeline looking over at him.

He half-lidded his eyes, his crimson pupils trembling slightly. "What, you have something to discuss with me, too?"

Evangeline nodded with great solemnity. "I have a private matter I’d like to discuss with you."

Thorne’s brows knitted, the long corners of his eyes lifting as he looked at Evangeline. The atmosphere around him grew heavy.

A flicker of light crossed Elias Moretti’s eyes, and the barest hint of a smile touched his lips. He gave Evangeline a careless glance, then shot Thorne a mocking, raised-eyebrow look. With a provocative expression, he followed her to the side. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

His lips parted slightly, but before he could speak—

A streak of light shot through the air, aimed straight for his throat!

Elias Moretti froze, the sound dying in his throat.

His eyes, dark and vicious as tempered ice, fixed on Evangeline with a chilling stare.

The corners of Evangeline’s lips lifted in a slight smile, her eyes shimmering with mirth. She turned and chased after Lachlan in the direction he had gone.

Her steps were light. After a few paces, she suddenly looked back at Thorne. Seeing him standing there like a Stone of Longing, she raised a hand to the ends of her hair and formed a heart shape.

"Thorne! Be good and wait for me to come back—"

The last syllable of her voice had yet to fade, but she was already far in the distance, her mischievous laughter seeming to linger faintly on the wind.
