Chapter 178: Chapter 178: Cherished

The lower body was a thick snake tail, covered with tough scales, muscles adjusting their strength with the terrain.

When encountering a steep slope, the snake tail first coiled around a nearby tree to stabilize the body before moving bit by bit.

When passing over slippery stones, the scales spread slightly to enhance grip.

It moved steadily, without any wobbling.

Seraphina Caldwell could clearly feel the caution in his every move.

Raindrops slid down the brim of her hat, but her body was almost completely dry.

"Don’t move around, don’t scratch yourself."

"Wyatt Yardley, aren’t you getting too tired like this?"

Seraphina asked softly.

Her voice was nearly drowned out by the rain.

Wyatt looked down at her, his Adam’s apple moved, his voice softened.

"Not tired. You should gain some weight, you’re still too light now."

After saying this, his tone carried no reproach.

"Sleep a little if you’re tired."

Seraphina didn’t speak further, curling up more into his embrace.

After walking for more than an hour, Evan Orwell suddenly descended from low air ahead.

Landing beside Wyatt, his breathing was slightly heavy, his shoulders and back tight.

"Ahead is a fork, the two roads take almost the same time to reach the Fox Clan’s settlement. The left path is an open mountain route with few trees, but it just rained, the soil and rocks are loose, prone to landslides."

"The right path is through Veridia. Dense trees offer rain cover, but beasts roam inside, possibly with formidable creatures hiding. I just scouted a part, felt a trace of a fierce beast’s aura, likely not simple. That aura was deeply concealed, moving quickly, not traces an ordinary predator would leave."

Wyatt, holding Seraphina, stopped, leaving shallow prints in the wet, soft soil.

His gaze slowly swept over both paths.

His eyes weighed the exposed rock layers on the left mountain path and the deep shadow of Veridia on the right.

"Left is too risky, if it collapses, our previous efforts would be wasted. If the terrain breaks, it’s impassable in a short time, supplies also become an issue. Though there may be beasts on the right, we’re five, not afraid of it. If lucky, we might snatch a Beast Crystal. Seraphina, what do you think?"

Seraphina looked at his serious gaze, her heart softened.

She understood that this decision was critical, a small mistake might endanger everyone.

He could have decided himself, yet he sought her opinion.

This respect made her feel valued.

"I don’t know, I’ll go with what you decide."

Wyatt smiled, fine lines appeared at his eyes.

He lifted his hand and adjusted her cape’s hood, blocking out the rain that had sneaked in.

After ensuring she was completely shielded, he turned to face the entrance to Veridia.

"Then let’s go through Veridia."

With the first step inside, a strong scent of rotting leaves hit them.

Overhead, tall trees almost completely covered the sky.

The heavy rain was blocked above, only a few light spots filtered down.

Underfoot, a thick layer of fallen leaves buried their ankles.

Each step produced soft crunches, occasionally sinking into the soft mud.

The group moved forward cautiously, alert to their surroundings.

Evan led the way, right hand always ready on his waist’s short blade.

The other three spread along the sides and rear, forming a protective formation.

Each step was wary of the ground below, all the while observing any abnormalities overhead and within the tree shadows.

Suddenly, the pile of dead leaves to the left exploded with a crash!

Dry leaves scattered, dust rising.

A robust figure sprang out, stirring a foul wind.

Covered in scales, it was a Void Lizard nearly four meters long.

The patterns on its back nearly identical to the decaying leaves, its tail thick and long, with half-inch spikes.

A blood-red tongue hissed, two curved fangs glinting, it lunged straight at Seraphina cradled by Wyatt!

Even though Wyatt had wrapped her tightly in a cape,

the female scent still attracted the beast.

It moved swiftly, muscles bulging beneath scales, explosive force immense.

Fortunately, it was just a Green Rank creature, not too difficult for them.

Strength levels were clear, threat limited.

Though surprised, the group did not panic, immediately entering combat mode.

"Careful!"

Wyatt quickly retreated with Seraphina in his arms.

The silver-white snake tail carved a shallow mark on the ground, standing firm.

The Void Lizard’s tail swooshed over, spikes grazing Seraphina’s cape.

The fabric was torn open in a long gash, fortunately not injuring her.

Seraphina staggered back half a step, her face pale.

Wyatt reacted swiftly, stepping sideways to shield her, raising a hand to block.

Spikes scraped his forearm, skin and flesh turned up, blood beads immediately seeping from the wound, sliding down the skin.

"Isaac!"

At his shout, Isaac Vaughn acted immediately.

Without moving his steps, his right hand rose, fingers trembling, spiritual power surged from the sea of consciousness.

Ice-blue light lines emerged in his palm, swiftly expanding into a semi-transparent net of spiritual power.

The net descended accurately over the Void Lizard’s head.

A strong chill penetrated its nervous endings, causing violent convulsions.

The Void Lizard’s actions halted abruptly, pupils dilated, letting out a heartrending screech.

It shook its head trying to break free from the bind.

But the force had already burrowed into its skull, disturbing its perception and balance.

Its body swayed uncontrollably, turning swift attacks into dull and disordered movements.

"Leave it to me!"

Gideon Larkin shouted, muscles swelling, body bursting forward.

Hard scales shattered under the heavy blow.

The Void Lizard howled dully, trying to lift its leg to counterattack.

But movements slowed by spiritual interference, easily evaded by Gideon.

Kaelan Hawthorne followed closely, agility unique to the Fox Clan, quickly maneuvering to the ground.

She weaved behind the Void Lizard, lightly tapping a tree trunk with her toes to leap up, claws growing sharply.

The Void Lizard, extremely agitated, frantically thrashed, tail sweeping through the woods, snapping several arm-thick branches.

Isaac seized the moment, furrowing his brow, both eyes focused on the Void Lizard’s left eye.

Spiritual power gathered again, this time more concentrated.

A needle-like, cold-gleaming spiritual thorn formed, silently piercing through the air.

The Void Lizard’s whole body trembled, forelegs kneeling, continuous wails.

It rolled and struggled, collapsing a large area of underbrush.

Before its howling stopped, from the shadows to the west of Veridia, a gray-black figure suddenly darted out.

Dry leaves lifted by a strong wind, revealing a swiftly racing beast silhouette underneath.

Another beast emerged!

This time it was an Emberclaw Wolf nearly three meters long!

Its whole body covered in short, dense fur, color matching the tree shadows.

Muscles bulged in its legs, every step landing silently.

Paws wide and curved, edges sharp.

Even in dim light they reflected a cold glint, surface vibrant with an eerie blue-gray.

It bared its mouth, revealing two rows of sharp teeth.

Saliva dripping onto fallen leaves, "emitting a nauseating stench.

The corroded leaves rapidly blackened and curled.

Its nostrils flared, eyes fixated on Seraphina in Wyatt’s arms.

"Watch behind!"

Just as Evan warned, the Emberclaw Wolf lunged.

It pushed off the ground, leaping into the air, front claws shredding through the air, driven by a gust, aiming directly at Seraphina beneath her cape.

Wyatt’s pupils contracted, swiftly leaping sideways with Seraphina, simultaneously shouting, "Evan! Protect Seraphina!"
