Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Betrayal

"What a truly stunning taste."

She gently held Selene Kane’s hand, stroking it while showing a slightly apologetic smile as she spoke.

"I’ve lingered outside for too long; I should head back now."

Selene Kane nodded slightly upon hearing this; she understood well that the other was offering a polite way out.

"I definitely shouldn’t stay too long either."

She muttered softly, glancing down at her appearance—her gown was already tattered.

The bloodstains on the dress were also clearly visible.

She looked utterly disheveled.

Lady Wynn immediately understood her meaning and nodded in agreement without hesitation, personally instructing her staff to properly arrange Zane’s departure on the spaceship alongside her.

The spaceship smoothly lifted off, and soon after the sound of its gentle engines filled the air.

Selene Kane leaned back against the soft seat, looking somewhat helplessly at the mermaid beside her.

Though the mermaid had already transformed into a human, sitting upright with a handsome face.

"Now that you’ve completely transformed into a human, you don’t need to act like you’re new here."

She couldn’t help but speak softly.

But she also understood; after all, she had killed a mermaid companion that he had known for a long time right in front of him.

That scene was too shocking, too frightening.

But...

Could beastmen and mermaids truly be considered the same kind?

This thought suddenly emerged, and she fell into a brief contemplation.

She didn’t notice that the mermaid beside her was blushing vividly.

The originally snowy white cheeks now tinted with a soft pink.

"I... I understand."

He spoke softly, head bowed.

Cautiously, he raised his eyes slightly, stealing a glance at Selene Kane.

Then, he quickly lowered his head again, instinctively wrapping his arms around his chest.

"Please wait for a moment, once I’ve healed I’ll be able to serve you."

"Uh?"

Selene Kane froze for a moment.

Selene Kane was bewildered—why did the topic suddenly turn to this?

She furrowed her brows, trying to recall what had happened earlier.

What exactly did she say to trigger him so much?

Recalling what she had just said, she couldn’t help but feel guilty.

She knew deep down she didn’t mean it that way.

But the other side just had to interpret her words like this.

What a naughty little fish!

The more she thought about it, the more annoyed she became; she almost wanted to find a knife from beside her.

And just slice this guy into sashimi for peace and quiet.

"I don’t have that kind of thought; you don’t need to take care of me, just focus on healing."

After all, no one wants to be seen as a master, right?

She didn’t have any pet-keeping needs.

Zane was in a panic now.

He was born with an exceedingly handsome face.

But now, before Selene Kane, he seemed like a different person, so docile it was almost cautious.

He looked down at his fingers, speaking in a barely audible tone.

"I... I really don’t want to be driven away. If you find me bothersome, I can serve you right now."

As he said this, the corners of his eyes started to turn red.

After speaking, he let go of his hands, revealing the wounds that hadn’t yet scabbed over.

Those were left from his struggles and resistance.

His fish tail, due to his excitement, uncontrollably slapped against the water’s surface.

The scars that had already formed scabs were torn open anew.

Blood seeped out from the wounds again, staining the originally clear fish tank.

The small water tank quickly turned blood red in just a few seconds.

Because of his vigorous tail slapping, small waves splashed out one after another from the water surface.

Her clothes clung tightly to her body, her hair was wet, and her face was dotted with water droplets.

This unexpected "baptism" suddenly made her very annoyed.

She unhappily wiped the droplets from her face.

At that moment, a pristine and muscular chest unexpectedly loomed large before her eyes.

In the moment before she fell, only one thought remained in Selene Kane’s mind.

Male mom?

Could she really have a son that’s a male mermaid?

She let out a soft hum, but before she could react, Zane pinned her down, pressing her to the floor.

Her entire center of gravity instantly shifted, her back hitting the ground hard.

The force made her chest tighten.

The world spun around her.

The wet and cold sensation on her body made her very uncomfortable.

The mixture of water and the scent of wounds created an inexplicable sense of oppression.

"Can’t you talk things out properly? Why suddenly jump out like this!"

Her tone was irritated, tinged with helplessness.

At this moment, she only felt like an amateur angler struggling to reel in a heavy fish weighing two hundred pounds.

But before the fish came ashore, it retaliated against her.

Not only did it make her soaking wet, it directly pinned her down, leaving her helpless.

This sense of powerlessness from being outmaneuvered was simply speechless.

Zane pressed down on her from above, yet his expression showed no guilt at all.

"I know you land women like things this way," he tilted his head slightly, with a teasing tone, "Don’t worry, I’ll satisfy you."

Selene Kane was pinned beneath him, unable to move.

Her hands were braced at her sides.

She looked up at his face so close to hers.

Looking into his eyes, both earnest and strangely sincere, her panic was replaced by an unusual emotion.

Her heart skipped a beat, and she couldn’t help but laugh.

Zane misunderstood, thinking it was consent, was agreement.

He smiled, a hint of anticipation flashing in his eyes.

Before she could react, Zane lowered his head, pressing his lips to hers—a bit parted due to her breathing.

In that instant, Selene Kane’s eyes snapped open wide.

She stared, momentarily forgetting to react.

She was actually kissed forcibly by a fish!

Zane’s thoughts surged, a certain notion took root in his heart.

He fell for her, completely.

"What are you doing!"

It was Evan Sinclair’s voice.

Zane’s body instinctively stiffened.

And Evan Sinclair’s steps already thundered into the cabin.

His figure was swift, nearly rushing forward in several large strides, in a blink standing behind Zane.

Evan Sinclair’s eyes burned with fury, grabbing Zane’s fish tail which shimmered with a blue glow.

With astonishing force, he tossed it towards a corner of the cabin.

"Bang!"

The dull sound of a collision exploded, sending Zane’s entire body crashing against the wall before falling heavily to the floor.

His innards felt displaced, pain spreading.

His complexion turned pale instantly.

His chest heaved violently, blood spilling from his mouth, staining the ground.

Evan Sinclair stood behind him, gaze icy.

His eyes first swept over Zane’s battered form, then slowly shifted to Selene Kane still sitting on the ground.

Her hair was slightly disheveled, face showing panic.

Clothes slightly undone, lips somewhat flushed.

Evan Sinclair’s teeth ground audibly, arm muscles tensed.

He suddenly turned, walking swiftly to Zane’s side, raising another fist and slamming it hard into his face.

This punch carried heavy force, causing Zane to spew a second mouthful of blood.

His body slammed heavily to the floor, unable to move any further.

"How dare you touch her?"

Evan Sinclair’s eyes were searing red with anger.

They hadn’t initially intended to leave with Selene Kane, having wrestled internally with the decision.

His mother sent tears-soaked farewells at their departure, her words repeatedly warning.

They bade farewell to their mother and pursued without hesitation.

But who could have thought that right before, they witnessed a scene nearly shattering them completely.

She had now betrayed their trust.
