The Villain Mom Awakens — Going Viral by Parenting on a Reality Show-Chapter 47 - 48: If Only Annie’s Mother Was My Mother
Renee Jennings sat on a pile of leaves, gnawing on her steamed bun and pickled vegetables. Directly across from her was Naomi Kenway’s lavish spread of food.
Renee Jennings huffed and took another vicious bite of her steamed bun. Watching Naomi Kenway live in comfort was almost more than she could bear.
"Mom, I’m a little thirsty. This bun is so dry..."
Nathan Lynch coughed a couple of times.
Renee Jennings’s eyes lit up. ’This is my chance to show off the water filtration I practiced!’ She quickly stood up and straightened her clothes. "Just a moment, Mona. Mom will go get you some water."
Chelsea Raines always sided with Renee Jennings. She and her son were also gnawing on steamed buns. They were still soft, not yet a day old, but compared to Naomi Kenway’s food, they left a bitter taste in her mouth.
"A fool’s luck..." Chelsea Raines muttered under her breath.
Jared Woods stared at Naomi Kenway’s canned food, practically drooling.
"Mom, what does luncheon meat taste like? I haven’t had it in so long, I’ve almost forgotten the taste."
Chelsea Raines tapped him between the eyebrows. "Look at you, drooling over that. You’ve had your share of gourmet food, and now some luncheon meat has stolen your soul?"
Jared Woods reluctantly tore his gaze away.
Only then did Chelsea Raines notice that the steamed bun in Jared Woods’s hands was almost untouched. "Why aren’t you eating? If you get hungry later, don’t come crying to me!"
Jared Woods mumbled with his head down, "It would be great if Annie’s Mother was my mom... all that yummy food..."
His voice was very quiet, but Chelsea Raines’s sharp ears still caught it.
’In my own son’s eyes, I’m not even as good as that horrible Naomi Kenway?’ Chelsea Raines was so furious she snatched the bun from Jared Woods’s hand. "Then don’t eat! You live off my food and my water, I worked my fingers to the bone raising you, and you say I’m not as good as Naomi Kenway?!! Naomi Kenway is a violent brute who abuses her child! The way she is now is just an act for the audience. You’ll regret it once she beats you until you cry!"
Jared Woods threw a tantrum, turning his head away and crossing his arms. "But it’s true! You only give me pickled vegetables to eat, but Annie gets bread. I haven’t had bread in forever! I’m suffering every day with you, my stomach feels like it’s shrunk..."
Chelsea Raines was beside herself with anger, her finger trembling as she pointed at Jared Woods.
Seemingly oblivious, Jared Woods’s eyes darted around. ’I’ll go snatch Annie’s bread...’ As soon as the thought occurred to him, he flinched. ’But Annie’s Mother is really mean, and it kinda hurts when Annie hits you...’
He shot a wary glance at Naomi Kenway but ultimately decided against it.
Chelsea Raines fumed in silence. ’She had endured so much humiliation in her wealthy in-law’s family, and her son was her only hope. She had counted on him to become successful and give her a comfortable life, free from having to please others. But who would have thought that Jared Woods would be disgusted with her? They say a son never finds his own mother ugly, yet he wanted Naomi Kenway to be his mom?’
After finishing their meal, all the guests waited for a while, as Renee Jennings had not yet returned from getting water.
A flurry of hurried footsteps sounded, and it turned out to be Renee Jennings, who was carrying a bottle of water.
Margaret Jennings breathed a sigh of relief. "Rachel, where have you been? It’s best not to wander too far. There are wild animals around here. If you got hurt, the consequences would be unimaginable."
Renee Jennings’s face was flushed with excitement. As if seeking praise, she said, "Pearl, you probably haven’t had any water yet, right? Here, let me pour you some."
Margaret Jennings looked like she wanted to speak but hesitated.
Renee Jennings said smugly, "Pearl, I filtered and then boiled this water. It’s perfectly safe. It won’t upset your stomach."
Hearing this, Chelsea Raines came over and exclaimed in admiration, "Oh my god, that sounds so complicated. Rachel, you’re amazing!"
Renee Jennings covered her mouth and chuckled. "I just happened to remember some information I’d read before. I never thought it would actually come in handy."
"Here, Rachel, pour me a little."
Renee Jennings poured her some.
"Pearl." Renee Jennings turned her gaze back to her and said enthusiastically, "Would you like some? Don’t be shy. On a trip like this, it’s best if we all help each other."
"Ah..." Margaret Jennings waved her hand, declining. "No, thank you, Rachel. You should keep it for yourself. Nina just gave me a bottle of mineral water, and I haven’t finished it."
"...Naomi Kenway’s mineral water?"
Seeing Renee Jennings’s expression sour, Margaret Jennings didn’t have the heart to dampen her kind intentions. "How about... how about you pour me a little anyway? I’ll have a taste."
The smile returned to Renee Jennings’s face.
Renee Jennings then went to Ruby Preston, but she held up a bottle of mineral water and said she already had some.
Renee Jennings had no choice but to return to her spot.
So as not to hurt Renee Jennings’s pride, Margaret Jennings took a sip of the water she offered. There were no obvious impurities, but it couldn’t compare to the sweet taste of mineral water.
After one sip, Margaret Jennings placed the cup on the ground and didn’t touch it again.
Renee Jennings sat a short distance away, watching all of this, nearly grinding her teeth to dust in frustration.
Chelsea Raines sat next to Renee Jennings and asked quizzically, "Rachel, why are you staring at Pearl?"
"Was I?" Renee Jennings snapped back to reality, a gentle smile returning to her face. "Oh, no. I was just spacing out."
Chelsea Raines nodded and couldn’t help but praise her. "Rachel, I had no idea you had this skill for finding water. That’s really incredible. Your wilderness knowledge is quite extensive!"
The blow to Renee Jennings’s ego was softened a little. She said modestly, "I’m not as amazing as you make it sound. I just happen to know a few things, that’s all."
Chelsea Raines glanced around casually. Suddenly, her eyes fixed on one spot, and she said with a laugh, "Look, at a time like this, Naomi Kenway is still playing on her phone. I wonder what game has her so engrossed she’s even ignoring her own son right next to her!" She snorted. "She’s hopeless!"
Renee Jennings looked over in Naomi Kenway’s direction.
Not far away, Naomi Kenway sat under a large tree, her arm resting casually on her leg. Her gaze was fixed on her phone screen, seemingly in deep concentration. Meanwhile, Ian Shaw sat beside her like a small, lonely bundle, appearing to be completely ignored.
Renee Jennings laughed along with her. "Nina might have a gaming addiction. It’s not an easy thing to quit."
"An addiction is one thing, but couldn’t she pick a better time? She’s on a show and all she knows how to do is play games. She’s not taking this seriously at all! That’s Naomi Kenway for you—a rotten person!" Chelsea Raines cursed, her mind filled with what Jared Woods had said about wanting Naomi Kenway as his mother.
The guide’s whistle blew again. "We’re moving out!"
At the same time, Naomi Kenway put her phone away. She had been reading up on how to pitch a tent. There wouldn’t be any houses for them to live in out in the forest, so pitching a tent was an essential skill. There was no signal in the rainforest; she had saved the information to her phone beforehand.
After they had walked for some time, the sky began to darken. The guide spoke through a megaphone, "It’s getting late. For safety, we need to spend the night here and continue tomorrow. Now, please receive the second mission card of your journey!"
A staff member handed over the mission cards. Naomi Kenway tossed her wooden walking stick on the ground before taking the card.
