Chapter 205 -6: Filth

The arrival of Hoffman, Tracy, and their three-person party added some liveliness to the Caucasus, where a banquet was held for the three distinguished guests as well as Princess Vero, who had arrived earlier. Komer had invited all the prominent gentlemen of the Caucasus Region.

Unfortunately, the Caucasus was far too humble. In the entire territory, there was only Komer, a baron, as well as Ilot and Puber, two low-ranking nobles with knightly titles, aside from them there was only one more person considered a noble, a certain Melbourne Lord who wasn’t even properly nobility, having only purchased a lordly title without any land to his name or formal recognition.

Beyond that, there was a large number of affluent but otherwise status-lacking merchants. This made the banquet somewhat farcical. Even Hoffman and others felt it beneath them to attend such an event. However, as the host, Komer seemed oblivious, introducing Hoffman and the others to each guest, leading to a somewhat awkward atmosphere at the banquet.

Fortunately, these wealthy merchants, although not of noble birth, were not lacking in etiquette. As merchants, they had also attended such gatherings in their own countries and city-states, only the guests there had not possessed the nobility present this time.

During Hoffman’s visit to the Caucasus, aside from that one conversation opportunity, Tracy seemed to keep a tight leash on both Hoffman and Renta’s whereabouts, never affording Komer another chance to be alone with Hoffman. However, she herself took several walks with Komer which sparked endless recollections of the past for him. The past was gone, the people remained, everything seemed to enter a tunnel where time flowed backwards, often leaving Komer in a trance.

Princess Vero was able to sense the special relationship that once existed between the woman before her and Komer. While Komer could hide it, her exceptionally keen Spiritual Sense accurately perceived the awkwardness mixed with an odd air between the two.

Tracy behaved much more normally, while Komer was not as adept at concealing his feelings. It seemed that the rumors about them were not unfounded. However, she felt that the intimacy and unspoken understanding that might have been imagined to exist between them was gone, replaced by a somewhat deliberate coldness. Both seemed to focus more attention on the other two visiting guests, to the disappointment of Princess Vero.

Princess Vero had no interest in political matters. To her, arriving in the Caucasus felt like a heavenly freedom–green hills, brilliant sunshine, fresh air, new environments, and kind people–all of which made her joyful and reluctant to return. Those around her seemed to understand her feelings and never mentioned any bothersome issues. How wonderful it would be if it could always be like this.

She found herself particularly interested in the past between Komer and Tracy. Although she pretended not to care, she couldn’t hide the truth from herself. Even a casual word, gesture, or look between Komer and Tracy could send her imagination soaring.

She felt as if she were under some bewitching spell. Could it be that she was actually developing feelings for Komer, who always seemed to hide a tinge of melancholy behind his sunlit smile?

She couldn’t be sure, but she knew deep down that the flame of jealousy was scorching her fragile heart. What did jealousy imply? Even a fool would know. What should she do?

Hoffman and his party finally left satisfied three days later.

Hoffman and Renta were very pleased with Komer’s performance. Five hundred half-beast soldiers under his direct command might not seem much, but what intrigued Hoffman and Renta was Komer’s promise to assist the rebel insurgents in the chaotic Leon Region.

Hoffman promised to send someone as soon as possible to contact Komer and discuss the logistics of sea shipments to the Caucasus, including weapons, armor, and especially food supplies.

Komer pointed out that this was the largest bottleneck restricting the insurgents’ growth, and to break it, the volume of imports must be substantially increased.

Hoffman understood that Komer was looking to profit from the situation, as the Caucasus too lacked food. Although Mattdam had opened its port, importing food on such a large scale under Philip’s watchful eye invited concern for many food merchants. Moreover, food production in the region primarily came from the Busen Plain and the Galle Plain in the Galle Region, both under the control of Philip and Zellin’s alliance. So, a comprehensive plan was necessary to import large amounts of food to the Caucasus.

The departure of Hoffman’s party left Komer feeling lost. During this time, Tracy and Komer had also a profound conversation, in which she formally requested that Komer not enforce the “Utrecht Decree” and not to get too entangled with the kingdom, emphasizing that the Caucasus belonged first to the Homer region, then to the kingdom’s territory, and that this relationship should not be confused, lest it cause significant trouble.

This politically charged conversation finally brought relief to Komer’s soul, which had been troubled by an inexplicable emotion. Even Komer didn’t know why, after the talk ended, the oppression and gloom in his heart had eased, although not yet completely back to normal. But given time, he believed he could free himself from these mental shackles.
