Back inside the outer castle gate, a chill imperceptibly seeped up Komer’s spine.
The outer castle gate had silently closed at some unknown time, and Komer could clearly see the surprise mixed with a challenging gaze in the depths of his two companions’ eyes; it was obvious that this unexpected change had stirred their combat readiness.
Komer felt privately ashamed; it seemed that he, the protagonist, had been overshadowed by the atmosphere since entering the castle, unlike his two more carefree companions. Having stepped through these doors and embarking on this path, there was no longer a need for excessive caution.
At this thought, Komer let go of many concerns in his heart.
His nature had always been a bit wild and unrestrained; otherwise, he wouldn’t have committed such impetuous acts in the past. This wildness, running in his veins, had not faded with age. It had only been suppressed due to the memory and personality of the crystal stone’s original owner, but as the power of the crystal stone gradually waned and merged into Komer’s body, transforming into his own power, Komer’s true nature began to resurface. In addition to absorbing some of Kennifer III’s personality traits, he was gradually breaking free from the old constraints of his character.
Even Komer himself felt some indescribable changes in his character. It seemed a level of prudence and calmness had been added to his inherently wild and impulsive nature. While Komer noticed these changes, he was glad Kennifer III’s obsession with emotions hadn’t affected him, for in Komer’s view, such a masochistic approach to dealing with emotions was an inhumane way to treat oneself.
Mr. Rebry stopped in front of the suspension bridge, carefully inspecting the structure and possible dangers.
Although his spiritual sense did not detect the chilly aura he had encountered before, Mr. Rebry didn’t dare let his guard down.
The undead creatures, or those of the undead class, were nearly omnipresent. The Land of Underworld was not only a holy land for dark-based magicians’ cultivation but also an excellent habitat for them. The Nether Qi allowed them to move under the light of day without fear of being harmed by the sunshine. These undead creatures could also use the Nether Qi to continuously enhance their power; some special creatures could even retain their intelligence and memories before the loss of life through the use of Nether Qi, although this was an exception.
Facing invaders who trespassed into what they regarded as their territory, these undead creatures certainly would not give up resistance easily. If they showed weakness, they were undoubtedly hiding somewhere they believed they could launch a successful attack.
From the construction of the castle, it was evident that it was fraught with many strange features; the corridors were so wide they gave the impression of an inner and outer castle, and surprisingly, there was a moat beneath the suspension bridge.
Although the moat had dried up, the channel below was still covered with various murky, pulp-like substances, and it was impossible to gauge the depth beneath.
Two thick wooden posts extended outward from the recesses above the gate, connected to the bridgehead by ropes twisted from an unknown material. The peephole directly above the gateway was dark, and due to its height, the inside was indiscernible.
A sense of alarm suddenly surged from the depths of Mr. Rebry’s mind. Almost simultaneously, Komer and the Dark Knight sensed the impending danger.
A fire shield burst ablaze out of nowhere just above Mr. Rebry’s head, dark figures darting like lightning, cobwebs sweeping across, yet they all fell onto the seemingly suctioning fire shield, where screeching noises and the foul stench of charred flesh instantly filled the surrounding space.
Countless spiders, the size of fists, leaped and scurried out from the peephole, sprinting directly towards the mage at the forefront. The ever-extending fire shield enveloped all the attackers.
Komer and the Dark Knight did not join in the attack on these beautiful yet repugnant large spiders; they kept their eyes firmly on the doorway while fully expanding their dark senses to detect any other incoming dangers.
The greasy spiders instantly shriveled into black lumps in the flames, their shrill cries piercing the air. Mr. Rebry frowned, waved his large sleeve, and the ashes of the spiders vanished into the moat beneath the suspension bridge with the breeze.
Human-faced Spiders?! These were a peculiar kind of spider that lived in dark, damp environments, moving as swiftly as the wind, varying in size but not classified as Magical Beasts; rather, they were an extremely venomous and aggressive species from the Blue Continent.
As creatures of a naturally dark disposition, they shouldn’t instinctively attack a mage like himself who bore an essence of darkness. Yet the reality was so strange; these unprovoked Human-faced Spiders had suddenly launched an attack on him, clearly indicating someone was manipulating them.
Mr. Rebry’s profound gaze was directed towards the inscrutable peephole above, as if trying to penetrate the endless darkness.
“Mr. Rebry, is there any problem?” Komer’s spiritual sense had already scanned the vicinity several times; he hadn’t detected any valuable clues.
The entire Ancient Castle seemed to have fallen back into slumber. Those Human-faced Spiders, as if burrowing out from the depths of the ground, had initiated their Attack on his group without any forewarning or reason. Such illogical events, indeed occurring just as they had entered the castle, raised concerns for the journey ahead.
