Chapter 34: a test

"What king of test?" Arthur asked. He figured Alexander was putting Marcus to a test by the sudden questions and the staring, which only meant meant one thing—he must have figured something out. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

"The attack on the princess and Serena wasn’t a coincidence, it was meant to happen exactly like that." Alexander revealed.

Arthur frowned, what exactly was happenning. "If it wasn’t a coincidence and it was intention then why exactly did the person do that?" Arthur asked.

"There’re trying to cause a diversion, knowing the princess was an important figure in the palace and the lady is a guest, the king and everyone would to too busy to focus on other things." Faith added.

It was all making sense now, everthing that happened was too closely related. It being an intentional one made more sense than it being a one big coincidence.

"The diversion could be the newly experimented rogues, Marcus said they were stronger and faster than the normal ones." Derick said.

"It could be that or something else, whatever it is we need to focus more and work harder, things are going to get messy from now on." Alexander said, his voice cold. He wanted to put an end to this annoying charade once and for all.

"Yes your majesty, I’ll find out more about it, if the rogues are experiments then there must be something to stop them, a kill switch." Derick said and Alexander nodded.

Faith sighed, her work here was more than she expected. "Why can’t you just capture this Marcus and put him in the dungeon, then torture him to reveal everthing. Your majesty is an expert when it come to that, it’ll make the work easier." She said.

Arthur let out a light chuckle. "It’s not as easy as you explain it to be, we can’t just capture him and torture him, it is like waging war, no matter how skilled Noct is when it comes to war it is not always the best option." He explained.

"Marcus has a thick skull, he might be sloppy but very loyal, he wouldn’t reveal it even though he goes through torture." Derick added and she nodded.

"I wanted to ask what are the rogues experiment?" Faith asked, she’s been hearing them talk about the rogues and them multiplying in ten folds, she wondered what they were and why they were coming out.

"You don’t know, I thought a witch have eyes and ears everywhere?" Derick asked a little sarcasm lacing in his voice and Faith didn’t fail to notice it.

"I do but I don’t know everything, no one does." Faith said rolling her eyes, she knew Derick didn’t trust her but him being so open about it made her angry.

Alexander stood up from his chair. "You’ll know later, right bow focus on finding that witch." he said before walking out of the room.

Amethyst hadn’t stepped out of the palace after what happened, she was indeed terrified but today she missed the garden and decided to take a stroll.

"Prepare my sets, I’m going to the garden today." Amethyst who was standing in front of a large mirror said to Vera who stood behind her.

Vera looked up immediately she heard the word. "Are you sure your highness, you should stay here until the king gives the word that you can go out." Vere said, her tone shifting from normal to worry.

Amethyst picked two shawls trying to see which one matches her better. "I’m okay, I’m just going to my spot in the garden." She said dropping the first one and wrapping the other around her shoulder.

"Your highness, you almost died, do you know how worried I was. Let’s wait until the palace is safe enough to walk around." Vera insisted. Amethyst sighed, she turned to her maid who looked genuinely worried about her.

She touched her shoulders. "I’m fine so don’t worry besides, there are more guards and Alexander is in the palace so there’s nothing to be afraid of." She said. "Although I’d like to shove my foot in whoever hurt her and Serena’s throat. How dare they try to murder a whole princess of Noct." She whispered to herself.

"Did you say something your grace?" Vera asked.

"No." She shook her head. "Let’s go outside."

Amethyst and Vera exited her room. She walked past the hallway with guards stationed at different places, they all bowed when she passed, she wanted to pay her brother and Arthur a visit but she knew they would be busy so she had to spend her time alone.

"Have you heard any news on Lady Serena?" Amethyst asked as they made their way towards the entrance leading outside. No matter how much she asked they just wouldn’t tell her anything and it began to annoy her. "I don’t know much but I heard Lord Arthur brought in someone to the palace this morning—a woman. It might be related to Lady Serena." Vera explained.

Amethyst sighed, what exactly happened to her that everything is so coded. They stepped outside, the cool breeze hitting her skin gently, she closed her eyes to feel it taking in a deep breath, how much she missed being outside. She had been in the palace for only two days and it felt as if she was placed in a dungeon.

Amethyst walked around the garden with Vera walking closely behind her. She walked down the flower bed, it was so beautiful. Amethyst wondered why the attacker wanted to kill her, not much people know that she’s Alexander’s sister and as far as she could remember, she didn’t attend any court meeting or whatsoever, even her parents don’t showcase her to the public. They were rather protective of her. So what does this person want? To hurt Alexander by killing me? She thought.

She and Alexander go way back but no matter how she tires, he never pay her that much attention so she just accepted him like that, so what made the attacker think that she was an important figure in his life.

"What is bothering the Princess of Noct to have her thinking so hard." A voice said behind her, she recignized the voice and turned around immediatly, her eyes landed on Arthur and a smile appeared on her face.

"Are you okay?" He asked. Amethyst walked towards him and wrapped her arms around him in a hug taking him by surprise.

"Hey are alright? Did something happen?" He asked still trying to process what she hugged him suddenly.

"Shut up and stay still." Amethyst whispered. Arthur sighed, they stayed that for for some seconds before she pulled away. She punched his stomach and he flinched wrapping his hand around his stomach protectively.

"Did you have fun? You and Alexander, both of you just left me on my own and you ask me if I’m okay, no I’m not okay. I almost drowned!" Amethyst snapped in anger.

Arthur stood up straight, he knew she was going to act this way. "I’m sorry, we’ve been busy. There’s so much going on even around Noct that we can’t afford to slack off right now, Just bear with thus for sometime." He explained.

Amethyst sighed. "I can’t get angry for long, so would you mind telling me something, at least even if it’s a little. I’m the princess of Noct, I should know a little bit of what is happening." She said.

Arthur stared at her for a minute. "Walk with me." he said and she nodded almost immediately. Amethyst turned to Vera. "You can leave now, go and take a rest." she said and Vera nodded, she bowed one last time to them both before leaving.

Arthur and Amethyst started walking together. "Lady Serena was spelled." He began.

"What! Spell like magic spell." She whispered and he nodded. She used her hand to cover her mouth which was hung open expressing her surprise.

"Mm, the physicians couldn’t treat her normally so we had to take a different path, we found a witch who could cure her and she’s fine now." He concluded.

"Oh my, poor Serena, I hope she’s perfectly fine now?" Amethyst asked and Arthur nodded.

"That’s a relief, can I see her?"

"Not now though, she’s resting. let’s hope by tomorrow she’ll be up." Arthur replied and she nodded.

Amethyst turned her hair behind her ear. "About the witch? Is she the woman you brought this morning?" She asked and he nodded.

"Did you see her?" He asked.

"No I didn’t, Vera told me you brought someone this morning that’s all." She replied. "Hmm, don’t tell anyone she’s a witch, it’s still a secret for now." He said.

"Don’t worry, my lips are sealed." She said and they continued to walk in silence, she turned to look at him, she could see his side profile. "Did you sleep at all?" She asked.

He turned to her. "I’m doing fine don’t worry. One night of not sleeping won’t do anything to me." He said.
