Jael ran his fingers over his teeth as he walked away from Mauve. His fangs were still engorged and so was his lower region. He resisted the urge to look back as he knew he wouldn't be able to leave.
He had heard the library door open and had known they were going to be interrupted. He wished he didn't have to go but duty calls, more than anything he needed to hear their reports.
He adjusted his pants, his fangs had shrunk but its partner in pleasure was taking its precious time. He turned the handle on the door of the library a little too hard.
These days his patience was steadily running out, it didn't help that every time he closed his eyes he could see her flushed underneath him. Ever since the incident where he had almost lost control.
He wanted to get this out of his system as soon as possible. It was distracting in a way that almost annoyed him. Her reaction every time he touched her also didn't help. He wanted to push the limit, to see her at his mercy.
Jael sighed and ran his hands through his hair, he wasn't making this any easier with his imagination running wild. He cleared his mind and tried to control his arousal.
He wondered if it was because it has been a while that was why he was losing control so easily. He couldn't wait to get this dealt with.
He pushed open his study and Danag immediately stood to his feet. The rest were already standing. Damon was standing in the far corner with his hair slicked back as always. Erick with his dark red hair stood beside Danag.
"Sire," Danag called as they bowed simultaneously.
"At ease," he said with a wave of his hands and walked to his seat.
They raised their heads and Damon returned to resting on the wall. None of them said a word as they watched his walk.
"Good to see you without a scratch," he said as soon as he sat down.
"I wouldn't say without a scratch, your grace," Danag replied and they all turned to look at Damon.
He raised his shirt to reveal green scars across his gut, three long lines from one end to the other.
"Pretty," Erick said with a grin.
"Only you would consider that pretty," Danag grunted.
"I have specific tastes," Erick said with a smirk.
"Enough with the flirting, give me the details." Jael's voice rang out, he was still annoyed.
Danag cleared his throat. "There is nothing new about humans. They are still the same and even with the treaty none of them would take us in without making a fuss. We spent most of our nights in tents and whatever shelter we could find."
"I see," he muttered. He had not expected less.
"I still don't see how this treaty benefits us in any way. Humans think they have an edge over us, that this treaty benefits us more than it does them…" Erick blurted.
"Erick!" Danag called out. "Do not question the Sire's decision.
"I am not questioning it, I am just saying that it doesn't benefit us in any way."
"Erick," Jael called, and everywhere went quiet. "We are not here to discuss whether you like the new situation or not. I just need you to report to me what happened during your journey. You can shove your opinion up your rear end and out your mouth."
Erick took a step back. "My apologies, your grace."
"Danag, you may continue."
"Yes, sire. The paler's attack was worrisome. We had followed the path."
"I was going to ask about that. I understand that you were in a hurry but I do not imagine you would be stupid enough to take a path that would put the carriage in jeopardy."
"Something was out of place. The attack was not only unexpected but fast. We know Palers are faster and stronger but it was strong enough to inflict such damage on Damon."
"I underestimated it," Damon said with a groan.
"Did you get it back?" Jael asked.
"I wouldn't be able to face you if I didn't."
"The monster was in such a poor state that if it wasn't that only sunlight could kill them, it would be dead a hundred times over," Danag explained.
"Anything else?" Jael asked.
"The paler had attacked the carriage."
Jael frowned, "Palers attacked anything in their path, it would have been easier to catch up with the carriage."
Danag looked at Erick and Damon and they both nodded. "The creature was fast enough to outrun the horses and since vampire blood is their preference, it could have easily caught up with me instead it went after the carriage that held the princess and her maid. Either it was trying to slow us down all it was after the humans."
"What are you trying to say? Palers are not smart and they never go after humans but once they have their eye on a prey they would chase until sun up." Jael said.
"I know that's why I can't help but think something is wrong."
Jael paused, "This might be a case of coincidence, or not. I will put my ears out. I doubt anything out of the ordinary is happening. These things have been the same for centuries. Unkillable and persistent."
"We could conduct an investigation if you want," Damon said.
Jael frowned, "I will prefer you hear. The next couple of months is about to be annoying. If anything interesting happens during this period, we will investigate then sit still and don't have too much fun." He glared at Erick and he spoke.
"Whatever, do you mean?" Erick asked.
"You are dismissed. I will see you at the second meal, I hear Mill wants to throw a party. She is happy that you have healed." He said directly to Damon.
He scoffed, "Thank you, your grace. If you will excuse me."
He bowed and walked out first with Erick and Danag following after him.
Jael relaxed into his chair and ran his hands through his head. He didn't want this especially now. He growled. If there was any truth to what Danag said, they were in big trouble.
He sighed, he already had enough with the vampire lords, they were a pain in the ass and he needed to throw a party sooner than later. Having all of them in a room was enough to make him throw up but he needed to call their attention to the new ways things would be done around here.
Jael swore, he hated responsibilities and had tried to about them for over a decade after his parents' sudden death had dumped a mountain load of responsibilities on him.
He was certain the Lords were pissed that he was just showing up and making such a decision but the fact that he was King meant they couldn't directly go against him.
However, there was no rule that said they couldn't do so indirectly and that's the part he was worried about. He needed things to settle quickly, he didn't need any paler adding more problems to his plate.
He looked at the piles of paper on his desk and swore. He would have to attend to them soon enough but nobody said it had to be now. He stood up from his desk and walked out of his office. He needed to take a breather.
He walked out of the door and down the stairs. He got to the main entrance and pushed the huge doors open and closed it. The moon was shining so brightly. Its glow gave the landscape a silver tint. The stars were just as bright and Jael took a second to appreciate the beauty of the night.
He had barely taken a few feet forward when the door opened behind him. "I don't need an escort, Danag."
"Might I ask where you are headed?"
"Nowhere you need to worry about."
"Papers could be about."
"The fact that you think I can't protect myself against a paler is insulting."
"I apologize, your grace but what if you get attacked by more than one paler?"
"If you are trying to tell a joke. It's not a very funny one and I am in no mood for a joke, funny or not. We both know, Palers never attack in pairs."
"Yes but your parents…"
"Danag!" Jael turned around to face him, his blue eyes glowed in the night. "I would prefer to be left alone."
"Yes, sire. I apologize for bringing up such a painful memory." Danag bowed but held his ground.
"It's not painful, it's shameful." He said and ran into the night.
Jael didn't stop until he got to a stream of water. This was their major source of water in the vampire region. They had a few wells but this water was constant. It flowed all around in tiny streams all leading to one big fall.
Jael sat by the water and listened to the steady rush, during the rains, it was much louder and much fuller but he preferred it now. He sat still by the side of the stream for quite some time before he returned to the castle.
