The Valued Lady is Truly Dominant-Chapter 241 Family Misfortune
Chapter 241: Chapter 241 Family Misfortune
Although Song Ci knew that the Wei Family’s grand old lady was ill, she did not visit the mansion immediately. Instead, she waited a few days before sending a card to announce her visit.
Upon entering the Wei Mansion, Song Ci was escorted into a small carriage that took her to the second gate, where Madam Wei personally awaited her arrival.
"Lady Song, my apologies for not welcoming you from afar," said Madam Wei, bowing respectfully alongside her eldest daughter-in-law towards Song Ci.
"No need for formalities," Song Ci replied with a smile, raising her hand slightly. "I heard that your family’s grand old lady is ill, so I came to see her."
Madam Wei expressed her gratitude, saying, "Mother’s spirits lifted greatly upon hearing of your visit. Please, this way, Lady Song."
Following her lead through the back courtyard, passing through a moon gate and along a corridor, Song Ci arrived at Shou’an Hall, the lodging of the Wei Family’s grand old lady, in less than a quarter of an hour.
There stood a girl named Wei Wenfang, seemingly the third in line, but the second eldest young mistress was nowhere in sight.
Song Ci’s eyes flickered as she received Wei Wenfang’s courtesy, then she slowly walked into the main hall and sat down while maidservants presented her with warm tea.
Madam Wei asked her to wait for a moment and personally went to the east side room to pay her respects.
"Mother, Lady Song from the Song Family has come to visit you."
The grand old lady of the Wei Family, leaning weakly against the bed, said, "Please invite Lady Song in to talk."
Madam Wei respectfully complied.
Soon, Song Ci, assisted by her nanny, entered the room. Seeing the old lady, looking ashen and not as vibrant as before, leaning against the bed, Song Ci sighed in her heart.
Next to the bed, Wang Qiuman, dressed in attire of Hunan style, was gently wiping the old lady’s sweat with a handkerchief. Upon seeing Song Ci, she stepped forward and curtsied.
"Old sister, forgive me for causing you worry," the grand old lady of the Wei Family smiled weakly towards Song Ci.
Song Ci chided, "We only parted from the village days ago, how did you wear yourself out to this extent? It pains me."
The grand old lady’s eyes flickered with a touch of pain and coldness, "Isn’t it because of all the troubles? Seems like everyone can’t wait for my peace and are eager for my demise."
"Mother," Madam Wei interjected, embarrassed.
The grand old lady cast a less than amiable glance at her, saying, "You have many affairs, leave us be, I wish to confide with my old sister." Then, turning to Wang Qiuman, her expression softened a bit, "You’ve also not rested well these days, go take some rest."
Wang Qiuman tucked the blanket’s corner gently and replied softly, "I’ll be in the west side room, call for me if needed."
Placing the handkerchief down, she bowed to both Song Ci and Madam Wei, then withdrew from the room.
The room grew silent, leaving only Song Ci and the grand old lady of the Wei Family, along with the trusted nannies of both ladies.
The grand old lady’s face darkened, her voice filled with sadness and shame, "Old sister, truly a misfortune for the family, my Wei Family is bound to become a laughingstock in the Beijing Circle. Cautiously maintaining the family’s reputation, I never imagined that even with one foot in the grave, I’d witness a Wei Family girl disgracing herself and our family without shame... cough cough."
Her attendant, Nanny Shui, immediately patted her on the back, advising, "Madam, please do not get worked up, you just took your medicine, and such coughing might waste its effects."
Seeing her face flushed from the cough, Song Ci also advised, "Indeed, take it easy, don’t get agitated; speak at your own pace, I’m in no hurry to leave, there’s plenty of time to hear you out."
The grand old lady lifted her hand, took a deep breath, sipped water, and gave a bitter smile, "There isn’t much to say honestly. Frankly, my unworthy second granddaughter disgraced herself... I would rather she went to the temple than stepping into that filthy place."
