Chapter 56: Chapter 56: The Wolf at the Door

Wen Ran tentatively asked, "Are you here to take Hetao home?"

If the wolf wants to take Hetao away, she wouldn’t object at all.

You can’t make enemies with wolves; they’re really petty, holding grudges fiercely, ready to unleash their wrath if offended.

The wolf shifted, stood up, and paced in place a couple of times. Of course, it let out a couple of low howls subtly.

Seems like it wants to communicate with Wen Ran, only cross-species.

Like chickens talking to ducks.

"What does it mean?" Wen Ran was puzzled.

The wolf stayed still, staring at her with its glowing green eyes showing a sense of speechlessness.

If wolves know what being speechless means.

"Who’s taking care of Hetao, you or me?"

The wolf pushed Hetao forward, clearly indicating for Wen Ran to take care of it.

Wen Ran was utterly surprised. She knew wolves were smart, but didn’t expect them to be this clever.

The wolf stood up and walked to the door, then came in carrying a half-grown deer.

"Boom!"

The deer dropped to the ground, the wolf extended its paw, pushing it forward, "Awoo~"

Wen Ran: "?"

She felt somewhat numb, "Child support?"

Wolf: "?"

It felt bewildered, didn’t understand, but, it handed over the cub and the prey, hoping the two-legged creature would get its point?

Honestly, the leader wolf really wants to raise its cub but the situation doesn’t allow it. Its mate, Hua Hua’s enmity is yet to be avenged, and the pack is torn apart by a traitor.

The cub must be entrusted to a reliable wolf for care; it never expected that its cub would accidentally end up with the two-legged creature downhill.

In a way, it’s safer.

With a leisurely stride, the leader wolf turned to leave, but then, its raised paw halted mid-air.

When the paw landed again, it veered towards Hetao’s den, licking up the spring water Wen Ran had prepared for Hetao with its large mouth and two tongues.

After drinking, it walked away, satisfied.

Its resolve grew stronger.

Mm! Better stick with this two-legged creature; the water she prepared tasted good, making it feel warm and comforted after drinking.

The leader wolf mused it must visit often in the future.

~

The leader wolf came and left quickly; only after its departure did Wen Ran belatedly realize the potential danger seemed resolved.

The wolf bears no ill will towards her.

So will it not pursue the issue of her entangling the cub?

The wind blew, plastering her clothes against her back, the chill a reminder of her cold sweat moments ago.

She wiped the sweat from her forehead, fed the chickens, took a bath, and practically fell asleep as soon as she hit the bed.

What a day full of experiences!

...

The next morning, Bao Wenxuan came knocking.

"Wen Ran! Ranran! Are you awake?"

Wen Ran leaped out of bed in a flash.

Opening the door, she looked at Bao Wenxuan with disheveled hair, complaining, "Don’t you have work?"

Bao Wenxuan ignored Wen Ran’s grumpy face, carrying stuff as she slid inside, "What work! The autumn harvest is over, the land needs to rest, and we people need to chill!"

She sure didn’t treat herself as an outsider, feeling right at home at Wen Ran’s, "My parents sent me a bunch of things, let’s enjoy them together?"

Wen Ran lamented, "You may not have work, but I still do!"

Bao Wenxuan: "?"

She paused, turned her head, "What do you mean?"

Wen Ran went to wash up, "The land and people rest, but the pigs still need feeding."

Bao Wenxuan pondered, hey! Seems true.

"Then I’ll go with you to gather pig feed; two people might be quicker."

"Alright."

Wen Ran thick-skinnedly thought, given the good relationship with Bao Wenxuan, helping with pig feed was only reasonable!

Three baskets of pig feed, they finished it in forty minutes.

Since they started early, returning from the hustle, the sun hadn’t yet become unbearable.

Looking at the stuff Bao Wenxuan brought, Wen Ran was truly stunned, "You’re not planning to devour all this at once, are you?"

"What else?"

The package arrived a couple of days ago, but everyone was busy as bees then, so no time to enjoy these.

Now it’s all good, crops harvested.

There’s time, and coupons too, Bao Wenxuan went to town yesterday, bought two pounds of pork belly, soaked it in the well, then brought it to Wen Ran’s this morning, "You know what I mean."

Wen Ran was clear as crystal inside; it’s merely gratitude for past help.

"I know, but maybe we should ration the meat."

Pigs raised are different from wild ones, consuming it all at once, Wen Ran felt for Bao Wenxuan.

"Eat!"

Well, Wen Ran didn’t say more, eating was well enough.

Once back, the two slowly prepared, till midday, finally putting together a quite decent meal.

Braised pork, twice-cooked pork, sausage stir-fried with garlic sprouts, cured duck, sour potato shreds, cabbage vermicelli, eight-treasure rice...

In the past, Wen Ran would have certainly snapped a photo, posted it on social media first before eating.

But now, she humorously thought, perhaps friends could eat first.

Bao Wenxuan was eating, and while eating, tears rolled down, "Ranran, look at my hands..."

Those fair, soft little hands were already growing calluses; blisters and blood blisters had formed and healed, in just over a month, looking quite battered.

"I feel like I’m beginning to fragment," Bao Wenxuan’s face carried tears, looking quite anxious, "Do you think I’ll have a chance to return to the city in this life?"

"You will," Wen Ran’s heart softened, she raised her hand, wiping tears from Bao Wenxuan’s face, "We’ll all go back.

The current difficulty is temporary; in the future, not only will we return to the city, we’ll take college entrance exams, go to university, find jobs! Leading the fashion trends."

Returning to the city, college exams, university...

These things, for Bao Wenxuan now, really seemed so unrealistic.

So distant, like unreachable things.

Yet, through tear-filled eyes, meeting Wen Ran’s gentle, confident, and embracing look, she suddenly believed.

She believed everything Wen Ran said would soon become reality.

"Really?"

"Really!" Wen Ran vowed.

...

After the autumn harvest came rain, continuous drizzle for two days, leaving Wen Ran quite resentful, damn!

She still had to go out for pig feed every day!

Sometimes while on the mountain, she’d run into the leader wolf, who generously brought Wen Ran some meat to try.

Sometimes it’s a pheasant, sometimes a wild rabbit.

Last time was more intense, a whole rabbit nest was surrounded, big rabbits given to Wen Ran, small ones it munched immediately, one bite, crispy crunch.

Wen Ran looked on quite disdainfully, truly an unfastidious wolf.

Eating fur and all, doesn’t it choke?

"Roar~"

"Awoo~"
