The Spoiled Young Lady Who Married a Military Officer-Chapter 50: Lu Xiao’s Parents Are Coming to Visit
Zhang Cui nodded repeatedly at Su Tang’s words. "Exactly, Brother Lu. You know I’m an impatient sort. Hurry up and tell us. Good news or bad, I can take it."
She had managed something as monumental as a divorce; what else could she possibly not accept?
Lu Xiao didn’t explain right away, only saying, "Wang Jianfeng won’t be able to threaten you anymore, Zhang Cui."
He had gone to the logistics department today and received some good news.
Wang Jianfeng was a man of bad character—deceitful and known to have accepted bribes during his time in office.
The logistics department was already planning to hand Wang Jianfeng over to the authorities and strip him of all his posts.
This way, Zhang Cui would have nothing to worry about when she started at the cafeteria.
"Wang Jianfeng... he’s not at the logistics department anymore?"
Looking at the expression on Lu Xiao’s face, Zhang Cui seemed to understand.
Some things didn’t need to be spelled out for everyone to understand.
Zhang Cui froze for a moment, then covered her face with her hands and began to sob.
Su Tang and Lu Xiao watched, saying nothing.
For Zhang Cui, this was a tremendous blessing. She was free from her ex-husband and had been given a new lease on life.
Only after Zhang Cui had cried her fill did Su Tang offer a comforting word.
"This is a wonderful thing, Zhang Cui. Now that you’ll be at the cafeteria, people won’t be able to say I’m going hungry."
The teasing remark reminded Zhang Cui of when Su Tang first arrived at the family compound.
She chuckled, took Su Tang’s hand, and sincerely thanked both her and Lu Xiao.
"In any case, I have to thank you and Brother Lu. I owe you two a tremendous debt."
Su Tang squeezed her hand back. "Zhang Cui, don’t say that. What debt? It’s only natural for us to help each other."
’Good people deserve good things to happen to them.’
"Yes, yes, you’re right."
Zhang Cui agreed readily, thinking to herself that if the couple ever needed anything, she would help them without a moment’s hesitation.
Two more days passed. Once the divorce papers approved by Mr. Zhao came through, Zhang Cui took Mai Sui to stay at the guesthouse for the time being.
Su Tang heard that Mr. Zhao had even applied for a unit in the family compound for her.
Since Wang Jianfeng was being investigated for misconduct, he could no longer live in the compound.
Su Tang immediately understood Manager Wang’s intention. The house Zhang Cui used to live in would, in all likelihood, be returned to her.
Wang Jianfeng tried to cause trouble a couple of times after that, but Lu Xiao shut him down each time.
With Lu Xiao there, he couldn’t make any waves and had no choice but to leave in disgrace.
After her argument with Zheng Jinxin at the hospital, they had become true enemies.
When Vice President Jiang Kang learned of it, he made a point of speaking with Su Tang.
However, Su Tang had nothing to hide. The facts were plain to see, and anyone could find out the truth just by asking around.
Because of this, the hospital president and vice president conferred and decided to transfer Zheng Jinxin to the emergency room. This would stagger her shifts from Su Tang’s and prevent any unnecessary trouble down the line.
One day, as Su Tang was leaving the hospital after work, she saw the mailman riding over on his bicycle.
"Doctor Su! A letter for your household!"
Hearing this, Su Tang stopped in her tracks and walked toward the mailman.
’A letter for our family? Could it be that Mr. Su and Mrs. Su have settled in on the island and written to me?’
The mailman placed the letter in her hand and left. Su Tang looked down at it. The sender’s name was Lu Zhenfeng.
’Wait, isn’t that Lu Xiao’s father’s name?!’
Su Tang held the letter from Lu Zhenfeng. The thin envelope suddenly felt as heavy as a brick.
The letter said that Lu Xiao’s parents were coming for a visit and were expected to arrive in three to five days.
’Lu Xiao’s parents... they’re coming. But... but I’m not ready!’
She ran back to their little courtyard in a clumsy, uncoordinated rush, shoved the gate open, and frantically looked for Lu Xiao.
Lu Xiao was crouched in a corner of the yard, repairing a wobbly chair. The evening glow of the setting sun outlined the sharp, focused contours of his profile.
"Lu Xiao! Lu Xiao!"
Her voice was laced with a tension she didn’t even realize was there. She rushed to his side in a few short steps and grabbed his sleeve.
Lu Xiao looked up at the sound of her voice, his gaze meeting her beautiful eyes, which were filled with anxiety.
He stopped what he was doing and stood up, his tall frame instantly casting a shadow over her.
"What is it?"
he asked, his voice deep and gentle.
Su Tang shoved the letter—a hot potato in her hand—in front of his face. "A letter! From your dad! Your parents... they’re coming! They’re really coming!"
She stared up at him, her long eyelashes fluttering like the wings of a startled butterfly.
"Lu Xiao, you have to be honest with me. Your parents... are they strict? Are they easy to get along with? Are there any topics I should avoid?"
The questions tumbled out one after another, like a sudden downpour.
Seeing her act as if she were facing a formidable enemy—so adorably helpless and flustered—made Lu Xiao’s heart melt.
A smile slowly bloomed in his eyes until he finally couldn’t hold it back and let out a laugh.
He reached out and gave her soft cheek a playful pinch, his tone full of mischief. "So, the fearless Comrade Su Tang is getting shy, is she? Is the ’ugly bride’ afraid to meet the in-laws?"
Those two words were like a spark, instantly igniting Su Tang’s indignant embarrassment.
Her earlier anxiety was instantly swept away by a wave of indignation.
"Lu Xiao!"
She stomped her foot, her face flushing crimson. She swung a fist at his solid chest, but the blow had no real force. It was more like a petulant display of her embarrassment.
"You’re the ugly one! Your whole family is ugly! Stop talking nonsense!"
Lu Xiao didn’t even try to dodge, just stood there and let her pummel him. Her light blows felt like little more than a cat’s pawing.
The smile on his face only grew wider. His chest rumbled with a low chuckle, which only made Su Tang more furious.
"Yes, yes, you’re right. My whole family combined isn’t as beautiful as you."
"Stop laughing! And start talking!"
Su Tang shot him a fierce glare, but her eyes began to redden against her will, half from anxiety and half from embarrassment.
Lu Xiao finally managed to stop laughing. He looked at his little wife’s adorable attempt to look fierce while feeling timid, her brave front, and his heart melted into a puddle.
He caught her hand and enveloped it in his own warm, broad palm.
"Okay, okay, I’ll stop teasing you."
Lu Xiao’s playful tone vanished, replaced by a low, gentle voice that carried a reassuring steadiness.
"My parents are wonderful people. My mom is gentle and very reasonable. As for my dad, he might look a little serious, but he’s actually very warm-hearted. Don’t worry. Once they meet you, they’re going to absolutely adore you."
He paused, his thumb stroking the back of her hand reassuringly. "Besides, who was it that arranged for you to be my wife in the first place?"
If it hadn’t been for Lu Xiao’s parents, Su Tang never would have married him.
They were the ones who had made the final decision about the marriage.
"Who said I was scared? I just needed to get the facts straight. The unit next door is empty, right? Go ask later if we can borrow it for a few days."
"We can’t have them stay at the guesthouse, can we? It’s so far away. How are they supposed to spend time with their son?"
Su Tang pulled her hand free and immediately began making plans.
She’d never met any in-laws before, but it wasn’t like she had a choice. They were practically on her doorstep.
"I’ll go arrange it now."
"However, Su Tang... when exactly are you going to give me that ’big gift’ you promised?"
