The Sole Prince of the Fallen Kingdom-Chapter 23. Possession
Chapter 23 - 23. Possession
"The Sole Prince of the Fallen Kingdom, huh..." The words came out of Aiden's mouth involuntarily.
It pained him just to see those words written as the title, as if he had obtained it through his actions—or wait, maybe he had.
C'mon, focus, Aiden! No need to dwell too much in thoughts. You have a path in front of you that you need to follow, so focus on it!
"Char, would you mind explaining the 'Possession' to me? It seems like it's something I inherited after Father died," he asked in a rather solemn voice.
[It is indeed as you think, Host.]
[Possessions are matters that are tied to one's soul and cannot be stolen by anyone, as when their owner dies, they either vanish with them or get passed down to their successor if that was the owner's dying wish. However, the owner willingly transferring their possession to someone else is possible.]
[Possessions can include anything: be it a living or non-living being, be it the cutest and fluffiest animal or the most gruesome of the Monsters known or unknown, be it a needle or the sharpest sword gifted by the divine. Anything and everything can be considered as a Possession, and as long as the possession is bound to someone, it cannot hurt its owner, regardless of its own will.]
[Your Possession, {Possession: Legacy of the Everharts}, is an energy of an artifact passed down through the generations of Everharts for as long as they have existed, and after your Father, Azriel Everhart, died fighting against the waves of monsters, it has been inherited by you, whom he thought of as his rightful successor.]
That sounds like a slave contract but applicable to anything. It disgusted him that these kinds of things were part of the system.
And due to everyone having a system, wasn't that legalizing slavery?
Was that the case even in our Kingdom?
Did the knights also get their souls captured that night because they were a 'Possession' for Eugene? But how?
They shouldn't be his possession from the beginning. Did someone transfer their right of possession to him? If yes, then who?
Uncle? Mother? Or maybe... Father?
Urghh! This 'Possession' thing is too messed up!

He shook his head as he realized that maybe having your life indirectly dictated by a Higher Being or God isn't all flowers and rainbows.
Especially in a world where everyone has such systems bound to them since birth.
[...I agree with you, Host. Systems should not be— %$&@^^%%!]
[Error Error— %##$&*@]
[%#@$$^^!!!$]
"Char? Are you alright? What happened?" Concern filled his voice as Char's words got cut and replaced with an annoying, incomprehensible sound halfway through.
[...Nothing happened, Host. I hope that you forget what happened right now. It was simply an error on my part.]
"Are you sure? It seems like your words were forcefully cut." Aiden tried to get a definite answer from Char out of genuine concern.
It was the first time Char had ever spoken something against its own (species?) that could very well offend the creator of this world.
Also, her being cut forcefully mid-sentence while saying something like that gave Aiden an ominous feeling that he couldn't seem to shake.
[Yes, I'm sure, Host. Anyways, shall I explain the other things about your Possession?]
Weird...
"Sure." Aiden had his doubts but decided not to pry too much at the moment and put his trust in Char.
After spending ten years with her, he had come to trust her that much.
There's no way Char would do something useful on her own...
[I can hear your thoughts, Host.]
"Ahem! Would you please elaborate on my possession a bit more, Miss Char? A humble, foolish being like myself would extremely appreciate that." Aiden switched his casual speech to a more formal one, addressing Char with the utmost respect in an attempt to butter her up.
[Alright, I will, so drop that tone. It's seriously creeping me out!] The disgust in Char's voice was palpable, which made him embarrassed.
"Okayyy~ Now, if you will." Aiden stressed his words to hide his emotions behind a casual, goofy tone.
[...]
"What? I stopped, right? Why do I feel like a child getting looked at as a disappointment?"
As those words left Aiden's mouth, he realized that he had disappointed himself.
His subconscious mind was still doubting his ability, no matter how much he tried to remind himself to forgo those useless thoughts.

{Char's POV}
[Sigh~]
With a defeated sigh, Char didn't try encouraging him this time around and continued the explanation of Aiden's Possession.
She believed that giving him time would be the best course of action, as of the moment.
[Host's Possession, {Possession: Legacy of the Everharts}, would manifest into a weapon if the Host had a true and burning desire when trying to manifest it. Once the legacy is manifested for the first time, the weapon would get bound to the Host's soul and would stay with the Host as long as he possesses the Legacy of the Everharts.]
[The type of weapon to manifest would be decided by the legacy itself. It would consider all things such as the Host's talent, his determination, the desire it was manifested with, and other factors before manifesting into a weapon that fits the Host the most.]
[If the manifested weapon has been wielded by anyone in the Everhart bloodline, the Host would also gain the Arts they once used to wield it. However, if a weapon that has never been wielded by anyone in the Everhart bloodline is to be manifested, the Host would have to create an art himself to maximize the weapon's potential.]
"..."
After finishing the explanation, Char stayed silent for a moment to venture into Aiden's thoughts.
[...You aren't following, are you, Host?]
"Ah! Yes, I am foll—" As Aiden jolted out of his thoughts and instinctively tried to defend himself, he decided to be honest. "...I apologize. I wasn't. My mind is just all messed up, and I can't seem to get my thoughts together. Could you please explain once again?"
[...]
"Please?"
[Sigh~]
With another defeated sigh, Char repeated everything.

"I'd have to create an Art myself?! How does one even make an Art by himself?" Aiden was dumbfounded when he listened to the entire explanation about his possession.
[The Art is, in dumbed-down words, the knowledge about something. So, as long as you would use any weapon or anything, you are bound to acquire some Art. The thing that differs most among Arts is their quality. An Art that is being passed down to generations, refined by everyone little by little throughout the countless centuries, is bound to be better than an Art that is only getting practiced and developed by a single individual, though there could always be exceptions.]
"How rare are these exceptions?" Aiden asked curiously while simultaneously looking for some wood and food nearby.
[If one is a generational genius, there's a 2% chance that they could develop such an Art.]
"So, for someone like me, it should be around at least 5%, right?" Aiden took a jab at himself in sarcasm.
[Yes, it should be.]
SNAP
"...Really?" The unexpected indirect praise from Char gave him such a shock that he broke the dozen frozen twigs he had collected in a single snap.
[Yes, it should be. After all, you have me with you!]
SNAP
He snapped them again. This time intentionally.
[Ahem! Well, first of all, I don't think there would be a weapon that hasn't been used by Everharts. They are one of the oldest lineages, at least according to what I have picked up during the History classes that host was taking.]
"Oh? I'm so proud of you that you at least paid a little attention during those classes. I thought that I would become someone whose system is so dumb that he had to teach it personal tuitions." Aiden replied while wiping off a fake tear from the corner of his eyes.
[...That was a really clever insult, Host. I am honestly more impressed than annoyed.]
"Right?" Aiden grinned while trying to climb a tree to get its leaves.
If he didn't find anything else edible, he was going to eat those leaves tonight.
Of course, after testing if they were edible or not in the first place.
[But I will still remember this insult, Host.]
BAM!
"Ouch! ...Why?" Aiden's foot slipped, and he fell off the tree he was trying to climb in sudden change in Char's words.
[Because I am still annoyed, just a bit less than impressed.]
"That's not fair! ...Oww, that really hurt."
