The Smiling Death-Chapter 364: Maybe...He did Find Someone
After having their afternoon lunch, Amon stepped out of the canteen along with the others.
The soft murmur of villagers chatting filled the air as people slowly dispersed toward their homes or training grounds.
Amon walked beside Scarlett quietly.
A few steps ahead of them were Julian, Katherine, Ethan, Steffeny, and Oliver, talking among themselves.
Just then a gentle voice called out, "Julian, are you going for training?"
Julian turned his head and saw two middle-aged figures walking toward him.
They were none other than his parents.
His mother had a warm smile on her face, while his father carried a calm and proud expression. Her name was Marina.
Julian smiled slightly. "Yes, Mom," he replied. "I will spend some time with my friends and then go for training."
His father chuckled approvingly. "Haha, good," he said with a nod. "Now we all need to train. We cannot remain lazy anymore."
"That’s the spirit, Jordan!"
Another loud and energetic voice suddenly came from the side.
A large beastman approached them with confident steps. His build was strong and sturdy, and his appearance looked quite similar to Ethan. His name was Mark.
He was Ethan’s father. Ethan sighed the moment he saw him. "Dad..."
The beastman laughed loudly and patted Ethan’s shoulder with force.
"So, you were here all along! We all heard the big announcement. Looks like things will finally start moving."
Around that time, Katherine’s parents also approached from another direction.
Her mother, Rei, greeted them warmly. "Julian, Ethan, Katherine, Oliver... it seems the younger ones are already preparing themselves."
Katherine smiled politely. "We will need to, Mom."
Steffeny’s parents also joined shortly after.
Her tall figure looked almost identical to her mother’s build, while her father stood proudly beside her.
Oliver’s father, Ophir, waved casually from behind them. His mother was just beside him. The most unique thing was that Oliver was not a pure human.
He was half human and half werewolf. Amon was really shocked to know this. Since werewolves and humans looked similar to each other, no one could tell whether his parents were human or werewolf. The same goes for him.
Soon a small gathering formed between the young group and their parents.
The atmosphere was lively.
"So you all heard Roland, right?" Julian’s father said seriously. "From now on we cannot waste time."
Ethan’s father crossed his arms. "That’s right. If we are truly leaving this place... then everyone must prepare."
Katherine’s mother nodded. "Training will start again. Not only the young ones. Even we adults must be ready."
Steffeny’s father laughed. "Haha! Looks like peaceful days are over."
Julian clenched his fist slightly. "We will train hard."
Ethan nodded beside him. "Yeah. If we are leaving this place... we need to be ready for whatever is waiting outside."
A few of the parents then turned their attention toward the young man standing slightly away from the group.
Amon.
He was standing about one or two meters away beside Scarlett.
Julian noticed and waved. "Amon! Come here."
The parents also looked at him with curiosity and friendliness.
Amon had already met them in the span of four months. Ethan also had younger sister. He had met her. But he rarely spoke to his friends’ families. Most of his time went with Julian and the others... or Scarlett.
Amon stepped forward slightly. Julian’s mother smiled warmly.
"Oh Amon? Looking as cheerful as ever."
Amon scratched the back of his head awkwardly.
Then he gave her a polite smile. "Yes, ma’am."
Jordan nodded approvingly. "I know you are quite skilled. Hope you can continue to help my son."
Oliver’s father laughed lightly. "Looks like you will have to help train these lazy fellows."
Amon chuckled softly. "I will do my best."
Ethan’s father looked at him with interest. "I already know that you are strong... but I heard you are good with women as well."
Amon smirked. "Of course I am... I will give Ethan some advice."
"Haha! Ethan is lucky to have a friend like you."
All of them laughed. They talked for a few more moments about training and preparing for what was coming.
Amon silently stepped away and then stood beside Scarlett.
But while standing a little away, Amon’s gaze slowly drifted toward the parents standing beside their children.
The way they spoke. The way they encouraged them. The small smiles and pats on the shoulder.
A faint smile appeared on Amon’s face.
But behind that smile, there was also a quiet ache. A feeling of something missing. Something he hadn’t felt for many years now.
He was an orphan after all. His parents were not alive.
Seeing the warmth between parents and their children made him remember the parents he once had, who loved him so much.
His eyes softened slightly as he looked at them.
Soon they were going to have a fight against thousands of monsters to leave this place. It was hard, extremely dangerous. Yet... one thing was clear. They were together... they had their family with them.
Amon was missing his own parents now. Unlike them... he had no one here... nor outside. Maybe... that might be one of the reasons he always tried to get closer to everyone.
But even after trying that, does he have anyone like them? No... he doesn’t have anyone like family.
While Amon was becoming more silent and gloomy, Scarlett, who was standing beside him, quietly noticed his expression.
Her cold amethyst eyes rested on his face. For a brief moment, her usual indifferent expression softened.
She knew him well over the past months. He had told her nearly everything about him. So she knew what he might be feeling.
She slowly raised her hand. It hovered in the air for a moment. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
As if she was hesitating.
Then she shook her head slightly, as if dismissing her own hesitation.
Without saying anything, she reached out and grabbed his hand. Her palm touched his. Warmth could be felt by his palm. His calloused hand had become familiar to her... too familiar.
Her fingers slowly intertwined with his.
Amon suddenly flinched at the unexpected touch. He turned his head and looked at their intertwined hands in surprise. Then at her face.
Scarlett didn’t look at him. Her face had already returned to its usual calm expression. But her earlobes were pink.
She didn’t let go of his hand.
Amon didn’t say anything. He grabbed her hand more tightly. He stepped closer to her as his shoulder touched against hers.
"Thanks," he whispered softly in her ear.
"Hm.." She just made a small sound with a nod.
A genuinely happy smile formed on his face.
Maybe... he did find someone.
