The Smiling Death-Chapter 320: Hehehe~ this is going to be fun
Amon sat inside the canteen at a dark wooden table while looking outside.
It was already dark now.
Huge wooden poles stood outside, each holding a wooden lamp with fire burning inside. They had been arranged carefully by the villagers. The warm orange flames flickered gently, pushing back the darkness of the night.
Soon it would be time for dinner, when people would slowly gather in the canteen. So he decided to wait.
’When will you come, my dear~’
Basically, he was waiting for her. He was waiting for Scarlett.
The villagers who cooked in the canteen every day gave him weird looks, but he dismissed them.
A gentle voice called out to him from the counter side where food was served. "Oh, young man. It seems you are waiting for someone."
Amon turned his face toward the counter. Standing there was an old lady who looked to be in her late fifties, maybe around sixty. She was a human.
Her hair was grey and white, indicating her old age. Wrinkles lined around her eyes and lips. She looked like a kind grandma from the neighborhood.
With a slightly embarrassed smile, Amon replied, "Oh... Ma’am, I’m not waiting for anyone."
The old lady’s dark eyes glinted in amusement. Her lips curled up playfully.
With a light chuckle, she said, "Boy, you can just call me Granny May. All the kids call me that."
With a polite nod, Amon answered, "Okay, Granny May then. I am Amon."
With a teasing expression, she leaned on the wooden counter. Her elbow rested on the wooden surface, and her chin rested on her palm. "I can see you are waiting for someone, Amon. Don’t think this old lady can’t even tell that much."
"Hehe~" Amon giggled sheepishly.
With a slightly shy smile, he admitted, "Yeah, I am waiting for someone... actually, I didn’t have anything to do currently. So I thought, why not just sit here and wait if she comes early."
With curiosity sparkling in her eyes, she asked, "Oho. Can I know the name of that girl?"
Amon thought for a while.
In truth, it was not as if he was really in love with Scarlett or had a crush on her. For him, it felt like some kind of entertaining thing to flirt with her.
Yup, he was just looking for some fun. That’s why he kept joking with other girls even if it felt cringe flirting. Because for him, it was some kind of fun. Of course, for now he couldn’t say the same thing when it came to Adelia or Seraphina.
For the first time, he had felt some affection for them, not the friendly feeling he had for his friends, but something more.
His heart had beaten for some unknown reason for a few moments with them. But for now, he was back to his old self here, trying to have a little fun again.
With a wide smile, Amon said, "Her name is Scarlett."
With slightly raised brows, Granny May replied, "Ohh. You really picked the hardest person, don’t you? Well, I won’t stop you. Maybe you can have a chance with her." She was not much surprised, but her eyes were sparkling.
With a casual grin, Amon scratched his right cheek. "Yeah. Nothing wrong with giving it a try."
With a nostalgic expression, Granny May chuckled softly. "Haha~ it’s good to be young."
Then, straightening up, she said, "I will go. I still need to arrange some things and then bring the food. By the way, I am the head cook here." 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺
With genuine surprise, Amon said, "Really! I enjoyed your cooking. The food tastes a lot better compared to what I eat outside."
With a pleased smile, she replied, "Thanks, boy. See you later."
She left and went inside the kitchen. Leaning back in his chair, Amon kept his gaze fixed on the entrance from time to time.
Half an hour passed.
Gradually, people started coming in. The once-empty canteen began to fill with movement.
Amon greeted a few of them with a polite nod and smile. Soon, his new friends entered as well. Julian, Ethan, Katherine, and a few others.
When they stepped inside, Amon waved his hand at them with an eager expression. They noticed him and walked toward his table.
Julian, however, gave him a suspicious look before sitting down beside him.
Ethan dropped into the chair casually, while Katherine greeted Amon with a soft smile.
Soon, the empty canteen was filled with noise and chatter. Laughter echoed here and there. Conversations overlapped. The sound of wooden chairs scraping against the floor blended with the lively atmosphere.
At the corners of the canteen stood large wooden fire lamps. Flames burned inside them, lighting up the dark interior with a warm glow.
One by one, everyone went to the counter and collected their food. Amon and his friends did the same.
Carrying their wooden plates, they returned and sat back at their table.
Amon tried to act normal. But his eyes. They kept drifting toward the entrance.
Was I always this desperate? Or did living two months on this island without seeing a real beauty make me a fool?
Then just as he looked outside again. He saw her. Scarlett was walking inside alone.
She was wearing the same brown outfit. Her red hair looked enchanting. Her crystal-clear eyes were otherworldly.
She took a wooden plate, served herself food, and sat at a corner seat where no one else was seated.
Amon immediately got up from his seat.
Ethan stopped talking to Katherine and looked at him with confusion. "What happened, Amon?"
With a casual tone, Amon replied, "I wanted to have a talk with someone. So I will be eating with them. Bye. See you later."
Thus, Amon left his friends for a woman. He was the worst friend they could ever have. Julian, who was already aware of Amon’s intentions, looked at him with a suspicious gaze.
Amon ignored the looks he got from his new friends. Carrying his plate, he moved toward the corner where Scarlett was sitting alone and eating quietly with her stoic expression.
With a calm smile, Amon sat on the chair beside her. "Hello, Scarlett."
Her spoon, which carried soup, stopped midair.
She slowly turned her face to the right and saw the same young man she had met that evening.
She frowned slightly.
With confusion in her voice, she asked, "What are you doing here?"
With his most honest face, Amon replied, "Of course, I am here to eat dinner."
With a slightly irritated look, she said, "I know that. But why are you here? I saw you sitting with that group."
Her eyes fell on Julian’s group for a moment, then returned to Amon.
The boy was still smiling gently. With a calm tone, he said, "I am new. I thought it’s better to get to know as many people as possible. You are the only person about whom I don’t know anything."
It was a pure lie. There were still many people whose names he didn’t even know.
She stared at the man with dubious eyes.
As much as the young man beside her might be saying the truth, Her eyes remained doubtful, as if she didn’t believe a single word he said.
After a long silence, she finally spoke.
With a cold and warning tone, she said, "Listen, Amon. You can eat here if you want... but don’t try anything funny. And don’t even think about hitting on me."
Saying that, she resumed her dinner.
Amon’s gentle smile widened in excitement.
’Hehehe~ this is going to be fun.’
Sometimes, he really looked like a real creep despite having such an innocent face.
