The Slender Waist-Chapter 239 - 168: General to the Rescue_2
Deng Guang was launching a full assault.
It seemed they had discovered a weak point in the south wall, sending even more soldiers there, climbing atop each other to scale it.
Feng Yun’s gaze swept to the corner of her eye before she summoned a few guards.
"Release arrows!"
Why wait until now to release arrows? Because weapons were limited, and so were arrows.
She needed to use them when the enemy was frantic and enraged to affect their judgment.
Feng Yun then took out a small horn, projecting the presence of an enormous army with just a handful of men.
"First team of archers, advance."
"Second team of archers, prepare!"
"Third team!"
"Shoot those dog thieves full of holes!"
The rebels confronting the enemy watched the arrows, as if they had eyes, fly towards them, accompanied by torches doused in tung oil descending from above, which scared them into retreating.
They didn’t understand how many soldiers the villa actually housed.
Dodging attacks not meant as weapons and wary of surprise arrows, they fought in utter disarray...
Deng Guang, a true commander of vast armies, had not expected to be outmatched by a mere woman, and in his frustration, he flew into a rage.
"Retreat and you will be executed!"
He drew his sword and advanced.
If the villa is not taken in a quarter of an hour, everyone will march with their head between their legs."
"Yes!"
The rebels cried out in unison.
Feng Yun felt a chill in her heart.
She had just scored a critical hit against Deng Guang by leveraging two advantages.
One was that Deng Guang wanted her alive, not dead.
The second was her unexpected and ingenious moves.
But the rebel army was vast, consisting of real soldiers capable of fighting and killing, and her troops and weapons would soon be exhausted, ending the initial advantage.
If the standoff dragged on, they certainly wouldn’t last until Wen Xingsu’s return, and she would fall into the enemy’s hands.
Feng Yun, with a cold expression, lit a torch and scrambled up the ladder, holding the torch aloft.
"General Deng! Do you really want to force me to a mutual destruction?"
Deng Guang, looking at the beautiful face under the glow of the flame, was momentarily dazed.
Her beauty was like a painting come to life, a vision of loveliness.
How could there be such a beautiful girl in the world, whose anger still couldn’t provoke irritation in others?
If she truly died in the fire at the villa, it would be a great pity.
"As long as the lady is willing to surrender, I, Deng, swear to the heavens to treat you kindly ever after..."
Ha! Feng Yun had seen enough of such faces, and she sneered coldly, squinting as she looked over the walls at the layers of houses and streets beyond.
"I also swear here, if General Deng takes one step into the Camp Villa, I will set myself aflame on this very spot..."
As she spoke, she suddenly looked off into the distance with great intent.
"The Great General! The Great General is back!"
The moment she spoke,
the people in the villa were filled with joy.
"The Great General is back."
The cheer erupted like thunder.
Deng Guang’s face changed.
Stationed lower down, they couldn’t see the distance.
A stir immediately went through the crowd.
But after waiting for a moment, Pei Jue did not appear.
Deng Guang clenched his teeth, "Playing me again."
He was no longer polite, "Charge in! I want that woman alive."
"Miss!" The loud shout for Feng Yun did not come from Deng Guang, but from Xiaoman on the north side of the wall.
Xiaoman’s voice of surprise overwhelmed Deng Guang’s roar.
"General! Miss, the Great General has returned..."
Feng Yun turned her head to look.
Xiaoman nodded, "It’s true."
This time Deng Guang didn’t believe it.
But Feng Yun did.
Xiaoman didn’t lie.
She carried the torch and walked over.
She saw it.
On the long street, a "Pei" banner fluttered in the wind, streaming fiercely in the cold air as Ta Xue charged toward the Camp Villa with a majestic stance.
The weather was gloomy without sunshine, yet Feng Yun felt as if she was being blinded by a piercing sun.
It was Pei Jue.
Pei Jue, alive.
Ta Xue valiantly extended its legs, galloping with Pei Jue’s tall figure becoming clearer from a distance. His Wind-Gown seemed like it would soar into the air, with the long procession rolling in like dark clouds, an unstoppable force...
"The Great General has returned!"
The shouts became high-pitched and intense.
Feng Yun did not move, her throat felt as if it was choked.
"Miss!" Daman came over to support her, as if awakening from a dream.
"He’s back. The General has returned."
Daman and Xiaoman’s faces were flushed with joy.
Feng Yun tried to smile, only then did she realize that her cheeks had been tense for so long that the muscles had stiffened.
"It’s good he’s back."
Deng Guang did not surrender without a fight, but neither did he struggle for very long.
The ones coming from the Camp Villa were his personal guards, but in the face of Pei Jue’s absolute authority, a natural sense of suppression made them fight as if their hands were tied. In less than a quarter of an hour, some were dead, some had surrendered...
Deng Guang tried to flee on horseback, but Zuo Zhong and Jiu You entangled him from both sides, and soon he fell off his horse. A crowd rushed over, pinned him to the ground with long spears, and he could not free himself.
The crowd knelt on the ground, begging for mercy and forgiveness.
Pei Jue remained silent, did not dismount, and walked directly near to gaze at Feng Yun on the wall.
"Open the gate."
Feng Yun’s face carried a smile.
"I can’t open it. General, please wait."
The large stone blocking the door was difficult to move, and the guards, already exhausted from dealing with Deng Guang, could not budge it now that they were safe, despite putting all their strength into it.
Pei Jue stood in silence, the two of them gazing at each other across the courtyard wall.
Suddenly, Feng Yun asked softly, "General, are you wounded?" 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
She was shorter than Pei Jue, and rarely had the chance to look down on him like this. The first time she did, she saw a battle-worn General Pei.
There were scrapes on his face, his eyes were bloodshot, even the stubble on his chin looked battered. Yet, strangely enough, there was not a hint of disarray on him, his dark eyes deep, his nose straight and prominent, accentuating his masculine strength to the extreme. It made her want to kiss him, embrace him, or even tease him...
Feng Yun was captivated.
The few guards heaving the stone panted heavily.
But they couldn’t budge it.
Whether it was the longing in her eyes that the man outside the courtyard wall sensed, or perhaps Pei Jue was also growing impatient, he suddenly sheathed his sword, pulled back the horse a distance, and then charged towards the courtyard wall. As he neared, he stood on Ta Xue’s back and leapt, his toes lightly tapping, and he vaulted up onto the city wall...
