Chapter 68: The hardest trial (2)

«You know, boy, there’s something I’d like you to know about that so-called charming magic. But first — do you even know what a Soulmate is?» Raelor asks, slowly walking toward Aoshi.

«A... what...?» Aoshi replies, completely taken aback.

«Yeah, just as I thought. How could you?» Raelor shakes his head, amused. «Anyway, regarding what you asked me earlier — how Princess Eliss is doing...» His tone shifts, turning noticeably more serious. «She only regained consciousness a couple of hours ago, after spending the entire night yesterday and the whole day today under close observation by demons specialized in healing magic. So, to answer your question, she didn’t have it easy — but she’s fine now.»

At those words, Aoshi jumps to his feet, alarmed and panicked. After all, you don’t need to be a demon expert to understand what healing magic is usually required for.

«D-Did Princess Eliss have an accident? Was she attacked? What happened to her — tell me!» Aoshi blurts out, firing off a barrage of questions.

«I’m pleased to see you’re so worried about her,» Raelor notes calmly. «Well, let’s just say she suffered from severe exhaustion, along with several injuries and internal fractures, after a small scuffle with... me.»

«Y-You’re joking, right?! You’re her bodyguard — why the hell would you hurt her?! Have you lost your mind or what?!» Aoshi explodes, heedless of the possible consequences of raising his voice at a demon who, for all he knows, might be merely pretending to be calm before turning violently aggressive in response to a human’s insolence.

Fortunately for him, Raelor takes no offense, maintaining his usual playful composure.

«I won’t deny that it saddened me greatly to have to resort to force in order to bring her back home,» the incubus replies with a shrug. «But orders are orders, and I can do nothing but obey.»

«I-I don’t understand... why would she have resisted...?» Aoshi stammers, confused. And yet, Raelor’s words ignite something deep inside him — not just a thought, but a fragile hope that makes his heart pound harder with every passing second.

«I’ll be brief,» Raelor says. «Everything Eliss did for you over these months, starting from the very first day you met, was not the result of any charming magic. Simply put, there was never any charming magic binding her to you. At most, we could call it a major misunderstanding born of Eliss’s naivety and limited knowledge. In any case, going into further detail would be pointless with someone unfamiliar with our world — you wouldn’t understand.»

And more importantly, there’s no reason for that boy to know anything beyond this. To a human like him, Eliss’s love might look like nothing more than a feeling born from physiological reactions, not genuine love. Explaining why it is, instead, far purer and deeper than what humans usually define as love would be nothing but a waste of time.

Aoshi’s eyes widen, his mouth falling open in disbelief.

«S-So... are you telling me that Eliss has always truly been in love with me...?»

«Indeed,» Raelor replies. «And in any case,» he continues, his expression growing even more serious, «the reason she required an entire day of treatment is that last night she fought me tooth and nail to prevent me from bringing her back to Elyndra. She fought until complete exhaustion — until she collapsed from pain and fatigue — and she did it because she didn’t want to be separated from you.»

«E-Eliss... she really went that far for me...?» Aoshi murmurs, shaken to his core, yet at the same time overwhelmed by an indescribable happiness. His greatest fear has vanished — the fear that Eliss would hate him forever once all of this was over.

«Yes. And believe me, I’ve known her since she was a child,» Raelor says, a faint note of pride in his voice. «I practically watched her grow up — in fact, we grew up together, like brother and sister. And yet, in twenty years, I’ve never seen her show the kind of grit and determination she displayed last night.» Then his gaze sharpens. «But back to us. It’s clear that the deep love Eliss feels for you is reciprocated, and in light of that, I can’t help but wonder one thing...» Raelor’s eyes narrow as they lock onto Aoshi’s. «Would you, in turn, have been willing to face death for her?»

Think carefully about your next words, boy. It’s true that no magic exists that can break a succubus’s bond of love with her Soulmate. But it’s also true that such a bond can be nullified in the simplest of ways — by killing the Soulmate himself. Eliss isn’t merely the princess I’m tasked with protecting; she’s also, and above all, a little sister. And I have no intention of watching her suffer for the rest of her life for someone unworthy of her. Over these months, you’ve proven time and again that you are worthy — refusing that gold was the final proof. But now comes the most important test. A man unwilling to risk his life for Eliss does not deserve to stand at her side.

«I-I...» Aoshi hesitates for a brief moment, then meets Raelor’s gaze head-on. «I’d be willing to do anything for her! Even to face every single suitor who dares court her! I don’t care if my life is the price to pay, as long as I get to see her one last time!» Aoshi declares with unwavering determination.

Raelor smirks, clearly pleased. He then extends one arm to the side — a purple glow erupts from the palm of his hand, and an instant later a black rift nearly two meters tall opens in the middle of the apartment.

«Beyond this dimensional rift lies the Narkhalis family palace, where Eliss is at this very moment. But be warned — the chances of a mere human like you crossing it unharmed, without being disintegrated before reaching your destination, are extremely slim. And even if you do make it through, once you arrive, a royal guard may mistake you for a hostile intruder and kill you on the spot.» Raelor’s smile twists into a dark, threatening grin. «So, what do you intend to do? Opening a rift between this world and Elyndra requires such an effort that I may be unable to open another for weeks. Moreover, it will close in a matter of seconds. Time is running out, boy — make your choice.»

Aoshi hesitates for a moment, his gaze lost in the absolute void stretching endlessly beyond the dimensional fracture. He has no way of knowing that Raelor’s warnings about the mortal danger of crossing that portal are nothing more than a bluff — just another test of his resolve and worth.

«I already told you, didn’t I?» Aoshi replies, taking a firm step toward the unknown black rift. «If crossing that portal gives me a chance to see Eliss again, then I don’t care what price I have to pay.»

At those resolute words, Raelor’s sadistic grin vanishes instantly, replaced by a smile — no longer mocking or derisive, but warm, reassuring, and filled with genuine satisfaction. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

«Then I’ll be waiting for you on the other side, boy,» Raelor says, giving Aoshi a light pat on the shoulder before disappearing beyond the dimensional fracture.

And Aoshi, without the slightest hesitation, follows him a moment later.
