Chapter 265: Handling Absence

Liam was looking at her without saying anything. But Rory knew that he has something bothering him.

"What is it, honey?" she asked brushing his hair with her finger.

"It’s..." Liam held her hand.

"Don’t say it’s nothing," Rory kissed his palm. "Or you might trigger my pregnancy rage."

Liam chuckled.

"Don’t laugh. It’s very real, you know...?" Rory smiled.

"I bet it is..." Liam kissed her forehead. "I bet it is." His smile vanished and he looked at her and sighed.

"What?" Rory asked. It was not like him to be this annoying.

"I’m thinking if I am taking the wrong path," Liam said.

"Oh, that’s...deep..." Rory tried to sit up. Liam helped her and sat facing her. "Explain."

Liam held her hands. "I...I am running toward money when I should be with my pregnant wife..."

Rory got what is troubling him by now. But she let him speak more as he was still looking for words to say.

"When you were pregnant with Ellie, I was not there. And... I thought arranging someone to look after you would be enough. But it had hurt you... I know it did. You talked to me about it. And now... you’re pregnant and I am leaving you to... be alone, again... I’m not the best husband, am I? I’m such a... jerk..."

He bowed and kissed her hand.

Rory smiled. He remembered what she talked about. And he wants to be by her side all the time looking after her. He’s become cuter, hasn’t he?

"Is it really you, Fizzy?" she patted his head.

Liam looked at her with a pout.

"Why have turned so...adorable?" she leaned forward and kissed him.

Liam looked at her with confusion.

"I very much appreciate what you are feeling, Fizzy. You are thinking of me and what I might feel. Now I’ll tell you what I feel," she scooted closer to him.

"It is true I felt so lonely and abandoned when I was pregnant with Ellie. It was not because you weren’t waiting on me hand and foot. It was because you weren’t even talking to me. It was entirely different then. I thought we were divorced and... I was..." she took a deep breath.

"It’s different now, Fizzy. You are not leaving me to enjoy yourself. You’re leaving for work. It’s entirely different. I cannot and will not expect you to not take care of your work for me. Unless I badly need your assistance, you should prioritize your work. Because you are working for us too, Fizzy. You’ve just started your business and you should not wait on me just because of my pregnancy. I’m neither that dumb nor that weak to expect you by my side all the time," she playfully patted his thigh.

Liam nodded. "You are not dumb. You are smarter than me," he said. "And you are strong to handle your own."

He then looked down in deep thought. She could see his smile returning to his face.

"I am going to miss you...your touches and kisses..." she said holding his hand. "Ellie will miss her dad too. But we can handle it...I know you will miss us too. But you’re leaving because it is needed, right?"

Liam nodded.

"You can support me even when you are near me. It’s just pregnancy. I’ve been through it before just fine. Just text me when you are free. Facetime me before you go to bed or when you wake up. It’s not mandatory. The time difference sucks. But... We’ve done it before. We can do it again. Just... Remind me to take my supplements and... I don’t know... come with me to the doctor’s appointments... I don’t want much from you," she said.

To be honest, if there was an important meeting on the day of her doctor’s appointment, she would go with someone else or alone. She wouldn’t mind. But she didn’t want to tell him that though. She knew that he would want to go with her and wouldn’t let her go alone this time.

This is what she truly feels. She is not someone who expects her husband to be lingering around her all the time. It would annoy her. A man should work and build a life for the sake of his family. He shouldn’t be lingering in the house waiting on his wife. It’s not very manly.

She could be wrong to think that way. But this is what she feels.

"I will call you at least three times a day. And I want to know everything Ellie does. Even if I am there, I will be thinking of you. I already miss your scent and Ellie’s giggles..."

Liam went on hugging her. Rory nodded along. He was talking and talking and before she knew it, she fell asleep.

Liam took a cab to the airport as he flew commercial. Just like he promised, he called her a lot. Ellie was a little cranky for a few days because she missed her dad but got used to talking on the phone.

It was similar to the few weeks Rory lived away from her family in her hometown. But this time Liam was there, and she was with Ellie and Mrs. Delport.

She missed his presence, but it was not very terrible. And she was busy running behind Ellie. Liam looked happy as his work was going well.

Just as she predicted, Liam returned for her twelve-week ultrasound. Ellie stayed home with Mrs. Delport and Liam drove Rory to the hospital.

For Rory, it was familiar although she was excited. She wanted to know if the baby was healthy, and she was looking forward to hearing the beautiful heartbeat sounds of the baby. She still remembered how overwhelmed she was when she heard Ellie’s heartbeat for the first time.

Liam was sitting with his lips tightly pursed. He was questioning a lot and Rory had "asked" him to keep quiet. he was not pleased and was very restless. He was staring at the nurse so hard, even she left her chair and went elsewhere.

"How long should we have to wait?" he mumbled.

Rory held his hand and patted it. She understood his hurry. This is the first time he is doing this.

"Will they tell us if it is a boy or a girl? I hope it’s a girl..." he said.

Rory pretended to not hear him. He’s been repeating this same line for the twelfth time today. She didn’t want to explain everything to him one more time.

The nurse came and asked her in and Rory stood up. She was a little nervous. She wanted the baby to be fine. She didn’t expect the pregnancy and she had drinks. She hoped everything would be fine.
