The Secret Obsession of the CEO-Chapter 241: Series of Troubles
Sidney’s initial statements were an integral part of the trial. Almost fifty percent of the case was built on Sidney’s statement and her notes that coincided with Jake’s observations.
If everything Sidney stated becomes invalid, the foundation of the case had the possibility of shaking.
Just because of Sidney’s stupidity, Lennon now can possibly avoid the death penalty.
The defense was already planning on arguing that the lockers that were found in Lennon’s office in his old mansion didn’t belong to him and that someone else planted them there.
They were not naming names, but they were indirectly pointing fingers at Rory as the culprit. They were arguing that Rory set that place up to save her husband.
The confessions Lennon already made and the bodies that were recovered were all twisted into Lennon confessing because of duress. The defense insisted that Lennon knew of those places because Liam told him about it and he confessed unable to bear the mental torture he was put through.
Lennon did confess to r*ping Liam’s mother, and stalking Rory, and he denied ever r*ping Allison. He didn’t confess to killing any woman and took back all the confessions he made. He even decided to plead not guilty to all the murders.
Lennon was very careful with everything and not much evidence was found at the crime scenes or the bodies they recovered. The case against him was all that Jake said and Sidney said. With Sidney out of the witness stand, that only left Jake’s statements.
The only DNA found was the DNA of Allison’s baby and even that was partial DNA. The experts said that the DNA could also be from Liam. And there went that proof.
The defense got the information that Jake is a clinically diagnosed psychopath with a previous record and argued that Jake conspired with Sidney to get back at Lennon.
Within some days, the defense was entirely changing the premise of the case to Liam being the killer and Lennon being the one who was framed.
But still, there were the records of the secret flights Lennon took and the bodies that were found in the woods. There was no proof that Rory transferred any of those to Lennon’s mansion.
So, it was pretty obvious that Lennon was lying. But then to get the death penalty to Lennon, the law required proof beyond any doubt.
Even Rory’s statement would only prove kidnapping, assault, and other offenses that do not warrant the death penalty.
The prosecution asked for some more time to collect more evidence. Even the judge knew that Lennon was the culprit, but no one can break the law even if is to put a terrible man behind bars.
The defense was against giving more time to the prosecution. They did not want to delay the trial. It was then the prosecution was forced to announce that they’d added Rory’s testimony to the trial.
The defense had to ask for more time to prepare for Rory’s questioning.
As everything was going on behind the screens, the public was eagerly waiting for the trial. The news organizations were kept in the dark about what was going on behind the screens.
But Sidney getting admitted into a mental health facility caused a stir. People were blaming the prosecution left and right and many already gave up that Lennon would be allowed to roam free as the justice system never punishes rich men.
It was then news about Lennon’s "innocence" started to spread around even against the better efforts of the prosecution. The defense team washed their hands about that issue although everyone knew it was them.
Even then, people only got angrier. They all accused the prosecution of playing games so that Lennon would be set free. No one believed Liam to be the perpetrator.
With just a couple of weeks left for Rory’s testimony, that night, Rory and Liam sat by their patio. Liam was manning the grill, more like burning the meat, but Rory didn’t mind. Anything tastes better if it is covered in ranch dressing.
"Please don’t feed Ellie this monstrosity," she stopped him from feeding Ellie.
Liam looked at her with mixed emotions of sadness and anger.
"Uncle Frank is better at the grill than you. You should have learned more from him. Why don’t we call him and ask for his suggestion? It’s all burnt. Barbeque should not taste this burnt," she said.
It was a suggestion. Maybe she was a little hard on him. She should have been more considerate when he tried for the first time.
"Shut up!" he pointed the spatula at her. "One more word and I..." he gritted his teeth. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎
"What?" Rory did not understand why he got so mad.
Liam threw the spatula into the fire and walked to the bar. He opened the expensive whiskey he was saving for some special occasion and started drinking.
Rory let him be. She found that her husband at times gets PMS too. At those times, she would keep her distance. He would go out or do something he wants to do to cool off. And then everything will be fine between them.
Rory cleaned up the grill and made sure Ellie had her fill. After bathing Ellie, she put her to bed. Liam still was not talking to her which surprised her.
Since Liam was not talking to her (she tried talking to him, but he kept on glaring at her and didn’t say one word to her), she called Julia to ask her opinion.
And then she gained one more knowledge about the Roberts men.
Apparently, the Roberts men do not like to be told that they are not good at the grill. Everyone knew Frank was the best at it and none of the others want to be compared to Frank. It’s almost the same as telling them that they have a small d*ck or that they underperform in matters of bed.
Rory did not think that it is this big an issue for Liam. But she knew it is not just this one issue. A lot has been going on badly these days and he must have accumulated stress. He just burst out today.
She wondered about the best way to let him know that she appreciates more than he thinks she does.
She could in the end come to a simple conclusion.
The only thing her dear husband loves more than anything is...
