Chapter 654: Chapter 567 Little Romance

Nan Zhan spoke so bluntly that Leng Shaoqing on the other end couldn’t help but let out a "pfft" and laughed.

"Leng Shaoqing, I’m seriously discussing the matters of men and women with you," Nan Zhan said with a straight face. "Please make a judgement with a professional attitude."

Leng Shaoqing didn’t know whether to cry or laugh.

"Counselor, let me tell you solemnly, you are about to fall in love."

Nan Zhan frowned.

"How long has it been since you’ve had this kind of feeling?" 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

"A long time, so long I can hardly remember."

"Well, for a young man experiencing the dawn of love, it’s very normal to do something outrageous to attract the attention of a woman he likes, but often the approach backfires. Not only does it fail to please her, but it might also panic and annoy her," Leng Shaoqing seemed to have a clear insight into the person on the other end of the phone,

All of a sudden, Nan Zhan began to think about his own behavior these past days, and it seemed... indeed a little counterproductive. Could it be that she had already started to find him irritating?

"How do I make amends?"

"Women, ah, always like the pursuit of details. A little care, a little romance from time to time, and she will slowly start to notice you. If she likes you too, your actions will soon resonate with her, and she’ll care for you and welcome your closeness."

Nan Zhan said, "Wait a moment."

Leng Shaoqing: "..."

Nan Zhan took a piece of paper and a pen, "Okay, continue."

Leng Shaoqing helplessly touched his forehead, could it be that Counselor Nan didn’t even have that bit of memory, or is it that the smarter one is, the lower their EQ, oh, to be negative is really something else.

"You’ll find her more and more attractive as you look at her, incomparable to any other woman."

"You’ll involuntarily start considering her feelings and thoughts, prioritizing her in everything."

"Most importantly, when you guys are alone, you’ll want to do... with her."

Nan Zhan nodded, "You make a lot of sense, let’s do that, keep in touch."

Some people are shrewd when it comes to others’ feelings, but turn into fools when it’s their turn, this is what’s called being blinded by the situation, right?

And Nan Zhan was just such a person.

Jian Si lay in bed tossing and turning, unable to sleep even though the air conditioning was cold enough that her cheeks were still burning hot.

Jian Si found that thinking about him was far more complex than any case; cases have clear beginnings and ends, while he was completely enigmatic.

Finally, she covered her head with a quilt.

Counting sheep.

The next morning, Jian Si got up early as they had to go to the accident driver to understand the situation; the driver was still in detention, and there were some procedures to be done first.

While she was tying her hair, there came a knock at the door. Jian Si thought it was Nan Zhan urging her, but instead, she opened the door to see the boss personally holding a tray, on which there was a delicate breakfast and not just that, next to the breakfast was a small transparent vase with a fresh rose inserted in it.

Jian Si stood stunned at the door.

"Miss Jian, please enjoy your breakfast." The boss smiled politely at her.

Jian Si took it with both hands and said "thank you". She certainly didn’t think that the hotel’s service had improved; almost certainly, the breakfast was prepared at Nan Zhan’s request.

Jian Si sat down at the foot of the bed, staring blankly at the tray in front of her.

A heart-shaped fried egg, a cup of milk, two croissants, along with a bowl of lean pork porridge and fried ham.

In this ordinary little county town, this breakfast was already considered "luxurious."

She pulled the rose from the bottle and brought it to her nose; the flower was fresh with dew, faintly emitting the scent of nature.

Jian Si couldn’t help but curl the corners of her mouth upward. What was he planning, all of a sudden being so romantic?

A thought flashed through her mind, but it seemed incredible.

Having finished breakfast, Jian Si felt refreshed and, upon leaving, happened to see Nan Zhan. The events of yesterday made it hard for her to look directly into his eyes, so she averted her gaze and said a brief, "Morning."

"Morning," Nan Zhan said, eyes fixed on her flushed face. Hmm, she looked comfortable, just as Leng Shaoqing had said; the more he looked at her, the more pleasing she seemed. No other woman could compare to her.

Nan Zhan’s faint smile caused Jian Si to pause momentarily, but she quickly regained her composure: "Have you had breakfast yet?"

"I have," he said, pausing. "Was the breakfast good?"

His gaze was so piercing that Jian Si felt as if she had nowhere to hide, "It was okay."

"Then I’ll tell the boss to prepare the same for you every day."

"No need. I can just have the same as you; there’s no need for anything special."

Suddenly, Nan Zhan leaned in closer, his fresh breath mingling with a distinct masculine scent: "Do you like having breakfast with me?"

Jian Si was rendered speechless by his question, unsure of how to reply. It was just a polite remark, but he seemed to read too much into it.

"Let’s go, aren’t we supposed to visit the detention center?" Jian Si lowered her head, "I’ll go hail a cab first."

When it was time to work, Nan Zhan didn’t bring up personal matters anymore, reverting back to his cold lawyer persona, which made Jian Si feel less pressured.

These people didn’t know of Nan Zhan’s renown; naturally, no one would inquire how such an insignificant driver could afford to hire such a prominent lawyer.

Of course, Nan Zhan’s response to their advice was to turn a deaf ear.

After several approvals, they finally met with the defendant, the driver responsible for the accident.

The driver’s name was Li Kaiquan, a man in his forties with a bald head, from an average household with two daughters in primary school. His wife was a typical rural woman without a career, staying at home to take care of the children, dutifully serving her husband and in-laws.

Li Kaiquan looked utterly disheveled. Perhaps surprised that his family hired him a lawyer, he was initially shocked, but soon buried his head in his arms, trembling as he spoke: "I’m guilty. I caused the death of so many people; I deserve to die."

Jian Si said, "Mr. Li, your family is doing everything they can to help you, trying to lessen your sentence. You need to work with us now, or else you’ll spend the rest of your life in prison. Your wife, your children, your parents will all be left helpless."

Upon hearing this, Li Kaiquan burst into tears of regret: "I’ve wronged them."

"Tell us what happened, in as much detail as possible," Jian Si said, turning on her voice recorder and taking out a notebook to record.

Li Kaiquan said: "On the 19th, I received a call from the higher-ups, saying they had a job for me, to transport a travel group from out of town. I asked how many people, and they said thirty-five. I told them my vehicle could only fit twenty-five, but they said it was fine as long as it was cheap, it didn’t matter if we had a few extra. I thought since they didn’t mind, I, of course, agreed. I didn’t expect everything would be fine when I took them up the mountain in the morning, but by evening, there was an accident. I wasn’t driving fast, but it felt like the brakes failed. There was a winding road ahead, with cliffs on both sides. I couldn’t control the vehicle, sweating with fear. At that moment, a bold idea came into my mind. I decided to crash the car into a mountainside, hoping this might avoid disaster. But when I turned the steering wheel, it also failed, and the vehicle rushed towards the cliff. I yelled ’Jump out!’ I don’t know how many jumped out, or how many were thrown out, but when I jumped, I hit a slope and caught a vine, which prevented me from falling. I saw several people thrown out of the car one after another, while others tumbled down the cliff with the vehicle." Li Kaiquan covered his face, "If it weren’t for the overloading, maybe the brakes wouldn’t have failed, and none of this would have happened. I deserve to die."

"You sacrificed thirty lives just for a trifling profit," Jian Si suddenly became emotional as she looked at him, her eyes brimming with tears. "If you had checked the brake system before driving, if you had even a little sense of safety, none of these people would have died. Their families wouldn’t be torn apart. Do you understand how painful it is for the families of the deceased? Their whole lives will be overshadowed by this tragedy."

Li Kaiquan looked at her, stunned.

Jian Si closed her eyes for a moment to compose herself: "Sorry, I lost my composure."

She picked up her notebook and walked out.

Li Kaiquan watched her leave, dazed, then turned to look at Nan Zhan: "Lawyer, what’s with her?"

Nan Zhan replied: "Her parents also died in a car accident, and the one responsible has never been caught and brought to justice. I want to ask, this ’higher-up’ you mentioned, what’s his name, where does he live, do you have his phone number?"

Li Kaiquan shook his head: "Here in Hengshan County, all the private vehicles are managed by someone called ’Brother Kui’. We pay him dividends every month. He has our phone numbers, but we don’t have his."

"Brother Kui? So is he from Aus City?"

Li Kaiquan thought for a moment: "I’ve heard from others that he used to be from Aus City and even owned a car repair workshop."

Nan Zhan pondered: "Do you still have the number he last contacted you on for business?"

As soon as Nan Zhan left the reception room, he saw Jian Si standing by the window, a lone, slender figure, so fragile it was heartbreaking. **
