Chapter 18: I just had a super shitty day and Yoon Seoyul isn’t here

Dropping the empty injector, Cheon Areum pressed his palm against the worm’s hardened shell, forcing his energy into it, trying to corrupt it from within. For a split second, it worked—he felt the familiar give, the momentary surrender of matter to his will.

And then it failed.

The corruption collapsed in on itself before he could even react. He didn’t even get the chance to check whether Han Kakta was still alive inside the creature.

Jaw tightening, Cheon Areum straightened. Without wasting another second, he moved to the worm’s head and planted both hands firmly against it, right where the brain should have been. His energy flared, coiling tightly beneath his skin as he prepared to force his way through by sheer dominance rather than finesse.

[The remaining energy is insufficient. It is dangerous to proceed with the skill: Energy Explosive.]

"...."

Without changing his expression, Cheon Areum pulled out another energy booster from his inventory and drove it straight into his leg. The warning vanished, and he activated the skill without any issues. The worm’s head detonated in a series of violent blasts, smoke erupting outward again and again. Cheon Areum didn’t stop—he injected yet another booster, forcing more energy into the explosion. When the smoke finally thinned, he saw that the shell was still intact.

The boss didn’t move, but it let out a violent, ear-splitting shriek, the sound vibrating through the air like millions of insects crawling all at once. It drilled straight into his skull, turning his stomach and making bile rise in his throat. Cheon Areum sat atop the creature’s head, breathing hard, fists clenched so tightly his nails bit into his palms. His thoughts scattered under the assault of that nauseating noise, frustration and unease twisting together as the shrieks continued to tear through him.

The worm beneath him had definitely weakened. Not enough to retreat—but enough that Cheon Areum could restrain it far more easily with his energy than before. He wiped the sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand.

At that moment, the ground ahead of him shook.

The sand split riotously as the remaining three bosses burst out headfirst, their massive forms surfacing almost in unison. The air filled instantly with their shrieks—piercing, layered, overwhelming—each sound colliding with the next. Cheon Areum stood up straight despite it, his face crunching as the repulsive, deafening noise hit him from point-blank range. His head rang, his stomach lurched, and his jaw clenched hard as he forced himself to stay upright, bracing against the assault with sheer will.

"So noisy—shut up!"

Cheon Areum snapped, his patience finally shattering. He gathered his energy in a tight, crushing grip and bundled the three newly emerged bosses together, forcibly sealing their mouths shut. The shrieking from them cut off abruptly, the sudden silence almost jarring. At least that much, he could manage. The one beneath him, however, continued to scream.

Cheon Areum couldn’t close its mouth—not without sealing off the only possible exit for Han Kakta. Gritting his teeth, he stomped down hard on the creature’s head in frustration, but the shriek only intensified, raw and agonizing, as if the monster were in constant pain. Realizing there was nothing he could do to silence it, Cheon Areum injected yet another energy booster and launched himself into the air, wings flaring wide as he put as much distance as he could between himself and the maddening sound.

Restricting all four worms at once was exceptionally difficult—even for him. The strain gnawed at his focus, his energy stretched thin in too many directions at once. He wanted to dive back down immediately and search for Han Kakta, but if he let go now, even for a moment, the other three bosses would rush forward—and they would head straight for the others. His gaze dropped to the three restrained worms below.

After a brief, tense pause, Cheon Areum made his decision. He would take care of them first. The boss Han Kakta was inside had already been weakened. As an S-Class, Han Kakta should be able to endure a little longer—at least a few more minutes. That was the only assumption Cheon Areum could afford to make as he steeled himself, tightening his control and preparing to end the remaining three as quickly as possible before going back for him. He counted it precisely—how long he could maintain control without another booster while restraining all four bosses.

Ten seconds.

That was it.

Cheon Areum injected another energy booster into his arm. If he could take down each boss within a minute, he’d need at least eighteen energy boosters. And that was assuming he only used energy to restrain them—any additional skill used meant an immediate follow-up injection.

He had already used five.

That left him with forty-five energy boosters.

If even one of them took longer than a minute, he risked running out before he could search for Han Kakta—or worse, before he could return to help the others. Cheon Areum separated ten boosters and pushed them to the very end of his inventory, setting them aside like a final lifeline. Then, before his energy dipped again, he selected his first target, wings beating as he dove straight toward one of the massive worms below.

Just as Han Kakta had said, the fastest way to kill a boss was to go inside it and destroy the core.

Choosing one at random, Cheon Areum forced its mouth open—his legs braced against the lower lip, hands gripping the upper one as he poured pressure into it. He injected another energy booster and stepped forward. The throat offered an easy path, slick and slippery with viscous fluids, but the worm’s bite strength was terrifying. Once his hands were in place, he couldn’t pull them away without risking being crushed between its jaws.

Deciding it would be better to use the monster itself as a slide, Cheon Areum lifted the worm into the air, forcing its massive body to form a line, its head tilted slightly off-center. He seated himself on the warm, slick tongue, preparing to let gravity and momentum carry him down—when suddenly, the worm’s movements burst with newfound strength. Its jaws snapped inward, the mouth beginning to close with Cheon Areum still inside. Because his energy couldn’t penetrate the inside of the worm’s mouth, forcing it open from within was impossible.

The moment Cheon Areum entered, the creature recognized him as a life-threatening foreign object and, driven purely by survival instinct, poured all of its remaining strength into crushing him.

Its jaws snapped shut.

Cheon Areum jammed his legs between the slick tongue and the roof of its mouth, muscles screaming as he braced himself. One hand shot up to clasp around a fang-like tooth descending toward his face, its sharp edge grazing dangerously close to his eye. He twisted his head away at the last second, breath hitching as the pressure closed in from all sides. With his grip on the other two restrained worms loosening during the momentary struggle, he had no time to hesitate. Using his teeth, Cheon Areum tore the cap off another energy booster and stabbed it into his arm one-handed as the worm continued to try to bite him in half.

Stretching his neck back as far as he could, Cheon Areum caught sight of the other two bosses slithering with their raised heads rapidly toward the floating box. The structure was wide enough for them to force their way inside—and if they did, the situation would spiral out of control.

Still trapped inside the worm’s mouth, he extended his free hand toward them. A thick rope of black energy shot out from his palm, snapping forward like a living tether. It wrapped tightly around both worms in an instant. With a quick motion of his hand, Cheon Areum lifted and yanked. The captured bosses were roughly flung away from the floating box, their massive bodies crashing back into the sand, buying him precious seconds despite his precarious position.

"Haa... haa..."

For a split second, Cheon Areum’s vision swam, his senses threatening to slip away. He didn’t allow it. He stabbed another energy booster into himself and forced his focus back just as the fang biting into his hand began to split his skin. His hands transformed instantly, reinforced claws forming as he crushed and snapped the tooth clean in half. Abandoning any thought of calmly reaching the core, Cheon Areum shifted tactics entirely.

If precision wasn’t possible, then destruction would be.

He drove his claws deep inside, tearing, cutting, and mashing everything he could reach. Flesh ruptured under his assault, organs shredded as he rampaged through the worm’s insides without restraint—turning its interior into chaos, intent on pulverizing it from within.

Pressed for time, Cheon Areum poured energy into his own body, hardening his muscles and bones until not even the crushing strength of the worm could harm him. Without hesitation, he plunged fully inside its massive body, claws slashing and tearing at every organ and piece of flesh in his path.

He ignored the core entirely, his focus solely on obliterating everything within. In moments, the worm’s interior was reduced to a chaotic mess of red mesh, gooey flesh, and dripping juices, leaving the shell itself completely useless and immobile.

Emerging from the worm in under a minute, Cheon Areum didn’t pause to catch his breath. His gaze snapped to the remaining two worms. Black energy pulsed visibly around his body, crackling like lightning as he stalked toward them, dragging their massive forms closer with sheer force, ready to end them with the same ruthless efficiency.

The next worm didn’t even get a chance to react. Cheon Areum plunged his claws into its body, tearing and gutting with brutal precision. The creature convulsed vigorously, spewing its own insides before finally collapsing, lifeless, into the sand.

By the time he faced the last one, Cheon Areum was practiced, his movements honed by the previous two. It took him only half the time to slice through the worm’s interior, every strike efficient yet crude. He could have crushed the core easily, but instead, he lingered, reveling in the chaos. A dark smile curved his lips as he drained the blood from the bodies, savoring the bloodshed and the thrill of the carnage.

When the last of the three worms fell, Cheon Areum emerged from the carnage, chest heaving but unshaken. Without hesitation, he grabbed the final energy booster in his inventory and injected it straight into his arm. In the frenzy of slaughtering the worms, his appetite for energy had grown insatiable. Every increase, every spike of energy, had only made him thirst for more.

Cheon Areum strode toward the last source of his entertainment, only to find it already lifeless. Han Kakta stood beside the fallen worm, one hand pressed against his lower face, brows knitted tightly together. The coppery stench of blood hung thick in the air—it must be overwhelming for this human.

"Why did you kill it?"

Cheon Areum asked, tilting his head curiously.

"What?"

Han Kakta replied, turning to him, confusion flickering across his features at the unexpected question.

"What happened here? I had no idea there were two cores inside the boss—that’s why it took me longer than I intended..."

"Did you do this?"

Even after seeing Cheon Areum drenched from head to toe in blood, Han Kakta couldn’t help but ask him. The thought that Cheon Areum had single-handedly taken down all three worms in mere minutes was absurd—bordering on impossible. His eyes flickered over Cheon Areum’s bloodied form, a mix of awe and shock anchoring his words. Truly an absurd concept.

"What’s up with you? Do you need another recharge?"

Han Kakta’s eyes followed Cheon Areum as he approached, then flicked behind him, taking in the sight of discarded energy booster injections, now embedded in the shredded, fleshy remains of the worms.

"Do you fight?"

There was no reason for him to kill weaker beings, yet the sheer irritation that this human had slain the worm he’d wanted to kill gnawed at him, sparking a deep, almost primal annoyance. In an instant, Cheon Areum lunged at Han Kakta, pinning him to the ground, brandishing his claws. Just as the tension peaked, a voice called his name, cutting through the charged air and freezing him mid-motion.

"Areum, that’s enough!"

Cheon Areum paused mid-lunge, his gaze dropping to Han Kakta’s wide, alarmed eyes and upraised defensive arms. Before he could react further, a strong tug yanked him away. Yoon Seoyul, panting heavily, had grabbed him by the wing and yanked him back, forcibly removing him from Han Kakta’s prone form. Seeing Yoon Seoyul standing there, chest heaving, Cheon Areum let out a soft, almost sheepish scoff. He rested his head sideways against Yoon Seoyul’s chest, claws slowly retracting as he lowered his hands.

"Gasp... What happened here?"

Kim Yebin’s eyes also widened as she stepped closer, taking in the grotesque scene—the worms gutted from the inside, their innards shredded and smeared across the sand. She moved carefully as the others followed behind her, equally horrified and fascinated by the aftermath of Cheon Areum’s brutal display.

"Master! Are you alright?" 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Yoo Jihyeon rushed forward, steadying Han Kakta and helping him to his feet. Cheon Areum, meanwhile, kept his eyes on Yoon Seoyul’s hand resting firmly on his shoulder. The knuckles were scraped and bleeding.

"Did I hurt you?"

"No, you didn’t. You wouldn’t hurt on purpose."

"That isn’t true."

Cheon Areum responded briefly in a low voice, and in an instant, the bleeding knuckles were healed, the cuts vanishing as if they had never been. He made no effort to explain his answer. Yoon Seoyul ran a hand through his hair, brushing back strands to reveal the skin that had been scratched and roughed up by the pointy teeth of the bosses, his gaze flicking over Cheon Areum with concern.

"Jihyeon, will you heal him, please?"

"I... I’ll have to come closer..."

Jihyeon’s voice wavered, uncertainty threading through his words. He glanced at Cheon Areum, clearly weighing whether it was safe—or even possible—to step near right now.

"Areum, close your eyes and don’t move just for a moment."

"Okay."

Cheon Areum obeyed instantly, though closing his eyes made little difference. His energy enveloped everyone around him like a vast, invisible pool, letting him see, hear, and even sense the tiniest movements—including the subtle flick of their eyes. Yoon Seoyul gave a careful signal to Yoo Jihyeon, who stepped forward hesitantly, each movement small and cautious. He stopped a few steps from Cheon Areum, raising a trembling hand. Despite the visible unease, he channeled his healing energy. Yellow light clashed briefly with Cheon Areum’s black energy, but Cheon Areum let it flow into his body.

As soon as Yoo Jihyeon finished healing him, he stepped backward, still very cautious of Cheon Areum. Despite being the most potent healer of his time, he had never faced a danger like Cheon Areum before. Yet, despite his shaking hands and wary posture, he had maintained his composure remarkably well—and even volunteered to heal him, coming to stand this close to him, which none of the hunters here had done by their accord. Cheon Areum liked him; that’s why he allowed the healing process.

"Are you certain he took down all three of the bosses by himself? Without Han Kakta?"

The guild master of Voidwalkers asked Kang Yura, his tone laced with disbelief. All the other hunters stayed close to their guild masters, not one of them wanting to approach Yoon Seoyul and Cheon Areum.

"Yes, master. Han Kakta had been inside the fourth one’s body, and Cheon Areum was restricting its movements too. He fought against all four of them but killed three of them himself without taking any energy from Han Kakta. I guess that’s why he has become like this."

"That’s right. No human is capable of this—he’s a monster."
