Chapter 18 - Cooperation

Violet's face glowed, resulting from the amazing sleep she had last night.

This made her forget about the unpleasantness she felt, and even the warm soup in front of her tasted better, especially with her body holding up better.

Lucas's narrowed eyes remained on Violet as she swayed her feet, enjoying her meal with a bright smile.

"Say, Violet, do you remember anything from last night?" There was a hint of resentment in his voice as he glanced at Alpha and Lydia.

He tried to get both of them to clear his doubts easily in the morning but was unable to get any response. While Lydia changed the conversation, the Alpha directly threatened to have a duel with him if he had so much energy.

"I went to bed early last night," Violet spoke out. There wasn't anything she did other than sleeping.

Violet picked up the spoon, taking a mouthful of the soup when Lucas abruptly asked, "Is there anything going on between the Alpha and you?"

Violet immediately choked upon hearing that and started to cough violently.

Lydia, who sat beside her, patted on her back and glared at Lucas. "What has gotten to you so early in the morning? Spare the poor girl."

Lucas opened his mouth, about to spill on how she sleepwalked last night when he felt a chill travel down his back.

"Lucas, you will be tasked with patrolling tonight," Sylas ordered.

"With you here, there is no need for that, Alpha," Lucas pointed out.

"And for rest of the week. It has been quite restless recently," Sylas added.

Lucas grabbed on to his spoon tightly, wanting to argue on how he had no basic wolf rights when Sylas's narrowed eyes made him release a quiet, subservient howl.

"Has anything been going on?" Violet questioned.

"Some wolves have been going out of line," Lydia vaguely answered.

Mathew never felt so humiliated. Standing outside the pack borders of Yellow Arrow pack, he could easily feel the disparity between the ranks. Unless he got the permission from the Alpha, he wouldn't be allowed to enter.

Tyler and rest of the warrior wolves standing beside him felt the pressure emanating from him, and they felt nervous. It wasn't because he was a superior wolf that they felt afraid of him, but because of the cruel tortures he will be subjecting them under if things went wrong.

Bella grabbed on to Mathew's hand and softly said, "Alpha, it's alright. I know one day you will show them the consequences of not respecting you now. The time hasn't come yet."

Mathew's temper felt soothed when he heard Bella's words.

Didn't the entire pack look down on him, thinking he wasn't worthy of being Violet's mate?

Now, he rendered Violet powerless and kicked her out of the pack.

And everyone in the pack had to bow down to him.

It will be the same for rest as well.

After a while of waiting, the Third-in-Command from Yellow Arrow pack arrived. Behind was only a few warrior wolves, and there was a dismissive attitude on his face.

"Welcome, Alpha Mathew. The Alpha is waiting for you."

Usually when another Alpha visits a pack, as a gesture of respect, the Alpha of the pack comes out to welcome. However, in this case, they didn't even bother to send the Beta here.

Mathew's hand clenched tightly.

"Is this how Yellow Arrow pack treats us? Are you looking down on us?" Mathew wasn't willing to take this humiliation.

The Third-in-Command spoke out, "The Alpha is busy. If you have any discontentment, you can leave and come back another day when the Alpha is free to welcome you."

Mathew was a boiling pot, with the lid on his head about to explode. He felt as though everyone was pointing fingers at him and laughing at his incompetence.

"Are you challenging me?" Mathew growled— his eyes flashing red.

There was a hint of disdain in Third-in-Command's voice. "Alpha, with no due disrespect, I do have blood of my ancestors running through me. It wouldn't do you well if you get involved in an altercation and get injured."

His words insinuated whether or not he was worthy.

Noticing how Mathew was on the verge of losing control, Bella interceded, "Please lead us."

Mathew looked at Bella, displeased.

Bella softly whispered, "It wouldn't be wise to get in a fight in their territory. We are outnumbered."

Mathew knew Bella was right.

They were then brought to meet the Alpha of the Yellow Arrow pack. Alpha James stood up and greeted them.

"I hope you didn't have a hard time coming here, Alpha Mathew. I apologize for not being able to receive you. I was a little caught up," James said.

Although Mathew had dissatisfactions inside him, under James' presence, he didn't dare to voice them out.

"No, Alpha James. It is us bothering you. We would like to seek your cooperation."

"Cooperation?" James then indicated for them to sit down as he took his seat.

Mathew explained, "As you might have heard, Violet escaped from the pack. It saddens me to admit this, but she betrayed me greatly before leaving, and she ran away on the fear of being humiliated and punished.

But since she is my mate, I am willing to look past it as long as I can have her. At the end of the day, one of us has to be magnanimous. Therefore, I would like to ask for your cooperation, so that I could get her back."

Mathew put on the image of a pitiful werewolf distraught in love.

James would be a fool if he bought this act with his years of experience. He stared at Mathew, bored, before asking, "Do you want me to lend you my wolves?"

Mathew looked at him, pleased. "If it isn't too much of a trouble for you, that would help our pack a lot."

James contemplated for a while before responding, "It wouldn't be an issue for me to do that."

Mathew instantly smiled upon hearing that. "Thank you, Alpha James."

"However, for our pack to go out of its way to do this, you have to compensate us in some way, right?"

Mathew hesitantly spoke out, "What do you need?"

"Our pack is the largest in the state, and we have most well trained members. Therefore, in return for help, it wouldn't be too much for us to request one of your pack's mines. After all, you have more mines than you can take care of."

The previous Alpha of the Blue Rise pack inherited many mines, but due to the lack of man power, most of those mines remained untouched. All the nearby packs wanted to get a piece out of the pie, but due to the alliance, they could only watch enviously.

'This sly fox— so that was what his intentions were.'

Mathew wasn't foolish enough to give up the mines. He knew the huge wealth that laid within them.

"Aren't you asking for too much, Alpha James? And those mines, they belong to Violet. I do not have the rights to transfer them to you even if I wanted to," Mathew replied, keeping his voice steady and calm despite the undercurrents.

"Since you are all mighty, I know you can if you wanted to, Alpha Mathew," James probed. "Also, I had some information on where the previous Luna might be. Few of my pack members spotted her recently. She might run away if you keep on hesitating."

Mathew knew although James did not take him seriously, he would not lie to him on this matter. After all, promises made between the Alpha were serious matters.

Mathew seemed to be contemplating.

Through the mind-link, Bella conveyed to him.

'Agree to him. Weren't there few mines without any finds? We can hand those over to him. If any other pack gets their hand on Violet, we would fall in trouble.'

Mathew understood that all the nearby packs were eyeing on their pack and the treasures that the pack might hold. If they got their hands on Violet, it would turn out very bad for Mathew.

Mathew took in a deep breath. "Alright. I agree to your proposition. Bring me to Violet first, Alpha James."
