The Retired CEO's Guide To Being Spoiled-Chapter 98: The Architecture of Ambition
In truth, the concept of virtual reality was hardly a fledgling idea. It was a veteran of the technological age. For years, VR had been quietly maturing, its tendrils reaching into every corner of industry and entertainment. Humanity, ever ambitious, had already laid the first stones of a new foundation: holographic immersion. The ultimate dream was no longer just to view a screen, but to sever the anchor of the physical body and allow the consciousness to drift freely, fully ’living’ within a universe woven from code and light.
Naturally, the gaming industry became the crucible for these experiments, the frontline where tech giants sought to plant their flags. Yet, history was littered with the wreckage of their attempts. Previous forays into full-dive holographic worlds had collapsed under the weight of their own promises. To echo the bitter sentiments of the player base, they had been sold a dream wrapped in exorbitantly priced hardware and silver-tongued marketing, only to wake up in a nightmare of glitching textures and sensory chaos.
The tragedy lay in the irony of the technology itself. Modern holographic science had indeed mastered the art of the neural bridge. It could successfully ferry a player’s brainwaves into the virtual pod, allowing the mind to inhabit the simulation. The failure lay not in the connection, but in the illusion. Graphic synchronization remained the unconquerable peak. To truly immerse a soul in a digital vessel, to make a player believe they were the character, required a level of graphical fidelity that pushed the boundaries of processing power to their absolute breaking point.
A mere discrepancy between the hardware and technical conflicts could cause the surrounding environment to collapse, generating glitches that would render the experience unbearable for the user.
"You must realize that every setting within a specific cultural era in a full-dive VR environment requires billions of distinct lines of code. The way they function varies depending on the angle of visual rendering, shifting dynamically whether the character is standing, sitting, or lying down. Integrating two such distinct cultural zones poses a massive operational risk."
"Which is precisely why we sought out the leading technology firms, is it not?" Julian Sterling navigated the interface on his computer, pulling up a conceptual draft for Ethan Caldwell to inspect. The screen displayed only a few rapid sketches, such as the artificial rings forged from the metals of the Centaurian Dynasty. They possessed a bizarre composition - metallic yet maintaining a certain fluidity between matter, preserving gaps that evoked a sense of weightless levitation. If one zoomed out, these particles of matter seemed to glow with varying intensities, forming intricate, mysterious patterns that felt both ancient and futuristically advanced.
"The civilization in this title does not originate from any existing culture. This means the details, the way of life, customs, culture, and knowledge are a fusion of two distinct stratums: the interstellar and the ancient." As Julian spoke, he opened another file. This one was a data sheet densely packed with notes, expanding on every descriptive silhouette and quick sketch to serve as examples.
"They do not stem from the aesthetic perception or concepts regarding the interstellar and ancient eras of this world, but rather, they come from "my" world."
Ethan raised an eyebrow. He simply interpreted the phrase "my world" from Julian’s lips as a realm the younger man had concocted in his own imagination. Such a construct would allow for greater freedom in blending these two aesthetics, yet it also presented a significant challenge. When a sole creator hit a creative block, the entire project would suffer.
Seeming to sense his concern, Julian continued with a relaxed demeanor: "Rest assured, I will complete all these surface-level descriptions simultaneously with the detailed project plan. Furthermore, what I am proposing is merely the synthesis and some foundational architectural culture; the rest will depend on the creative expansion of Iris Visuals."
Julian possessed such confidence in maintaining his creative rhythm because the "world of his own" he referred to was, in fact, a real world - the place where Julian had lived for nearly thirty years. As someone who had been immersed in a highly developed socio-economic environment and had absorbed the cultural lifestyles and aesthetics of both East and West, Julian wished to breathe life back into an era that was once intimately familiar to him.
"Moreover..." Julian paused for a moment. He reached out to clasp the other man’s hand, his fingers toying playfully with the wedding band on Ethan’s finger. "Who is without ambition? Ethan, when you first began to take this project seriously, you were full of ambition yourself, were you not?"
It had started with snatching a plot of land from Aaron Sterling, largely because Aaron had been crossing the line, ceaselessly using the Caldwell family’s influence to secure benefits for himself. Initially, Ethan had merely intended to amuse himself. A piece of land in the far suburbs cost a trivial amount compared to the colossal fortune of the Caldwell Empire.
Even when Julian had actually suggested developing a project there, Ethan had not envisioned it evolving into a long-term strategic development or a key priority. It was simply that... Julian was right. At some point, unbeknownst to him, Ethan had indeed invested his ambition into this plan.
Engaging with cutting-edge technology and transforming it into a completely new market sector for the Caldwell Empire meant stepping out of his comfort zone and venturing into uncharted territory. Ethan possessed ambition, and it was by no means small. The Caldwell Empire might appear massive, but if one looked beyond the borders of Saint Lawrence City, could it truly compare to other leading giants? Not to mention the ever-expanding multinational corporations and the volatility of politics - anything could collapse at any moment. Everything compelled Ethan to realize that only by bolstering his own intrinsic strength could he truly feel secure.
That was the reason Ethan had personally traveled abroad. Despite being the President of a major conglomerate, he had humbled himself to negotiate from a lower position with The Olympus Group. He understood perfectly well that if this project was to succeed, the core technological issues could not be neglected.
Ethan did not answer Julian immediately. Instead, he enclosed Julian’s hand within his own palm, then pressed a gentle kiss upon the back of his hand.
"I hope your ambition becomes a reality, Julian."
"Then I also hope that our Mr. Caldwell achieves his heart’s desire, elevating the Caldwell Empire to new heights."
