Chapter 375

Hidden from the world deep underground lay the UD Group’s secret research facility. Here, the company studied necromancy—the very foundation of its core technology. It was a place considered one of the most crucial assets of the group by Wurgen during his lifetime.

But while its long-standing existence since the company’s early days was part of its significance to Wurgen, the main reason was in fact the innermost chamber of the lab—Wurgen’s personal laboratory.

Wooong-

Thick black mist filled the hallway. The ceiling lights, which should have been functioning normally, flickered erratically, casting eerie, shifting shadows on the walls.

It was a sight that instinctively triggered fear in anyone who witnessed it. And being no exceptions, the researchers passing by were all clinging tightly to the opposite wall, their bodies trembling.

“Ugh... No matter how many times I pass by here, I still hate it.”

“Doesn’t it seem worse than before?”

“I heard someone say it’s because the President’s vengeful spirit lingers here... Ah! Let’s walk faster!”

Fearing some kind of supernatural curse, the researchers hurried away, leaving the hallway eerily empty once more.

Step-

That was when a lone figure appeared, striding forward, unfazed.

Instantly, the black mist condensed into ghostly hands and lunged at him, while the shadows along the corridor stretched open like gaping mouths, ready to devour.

The assault was straight out of a horror film, with wraiths rushing at him from all directions as well. But before they could reach their target...

“It’s me.”

Everything froze.

“Oh! Our apologies!”

“It’s fine. You were ordered to behave this way in the first place. I can’t blame you for that.”

“Thank you for understanding! Make way, everyone! Let him through!”

At the command of the leading wraith, the black mist and shadows vanished, and the flickering lights returned to normal. Calm, Se-Hoon walked through, effortlessly bypassing the security system Wurgen had set up. He then turned his gaze toward the farthest end of the corridor, toward a wall.

“...So it’s really here.”

Squinting, Se-Hoon ran both hands carefully along the seemingly solid surface. Soon enough, his fingers brushed against something that was invisible to the eye and so elusive that even the slightest loss of focus would make it hazy, like smoke dispersing into the air.

“Found it.”

Finally, after days of searching, he had located the entrance. Without hesitation, Se-Hoon activated his power of Boundaries and a glowing line extended from his right hand, outlining a rectangular shape about two meters tall. Then, once the boundary forming the door was complete, the hidden wall phased out—transforming into a black door.

Grasping the handle, Se-Hoon twisted it open and stepped inside.

Whoosh!

Wurgen’s personal laboratory revealed itself.

It was meticulously organized, every piece of research equipment arranged in perfect order. The devices ranged from high-tech devices to occult artifacts like a bull’s skull. Yet, despite all of the advanced and mystical tools present, the space itself wasn’t very large.

Looks like it would be seven hundred square feet at most... smaller than I expected.

Se-Hoon had assumed it would be as expansive as Ludwig’s lab, but reality proved otherwise.

Scanning the surroundings, his gaze landed on something peculiar: two massive windows. One looked out into the research facility, and the other overlooked the Netherworld’s vast ocean. Looking through them, Se-Hoon at last grasped where the lab had been built.

So it’s between reality and the Netherworld.

The lab was hidden so well that it was impossible to find—let alone enter—without the ability to manipulate boundaries.

No wonder he was so confident.

He had been wondering why Wurgen had left his secret lab so openly within the research facility. Now it all made sense.

I thought the research facility would be buried somewhere deep within the Netherworld, but instead... it was right here, in between two worlds.

With a smirk, Se-Hoon turned his attention to the windows reflecting each realm.

No one should be able to enter here without permission.

He had been considering just gathering all valuable materials and sealing off the lab. Now, though, given its unique location, he thought it made more sense to keep using it for himself.

With that decision made, Se-Hoon wasted no time and began his investigation.

“Let’s see...”

Opening the door labeled “Storage” first, he was met with the astonishing sight of a room dozens of times larger than the lab itself. A vast array of artifacts was neatly displayed on shelves inside, each one giving off the feeling of immense value.

“...Impressive.”

Was the sight before him what the legacy of a man who once commanded a global company would be? Browsing the room with extravagant relics, Se-Hoon quickly summed them up.

By sheer monetary worth, Ludwig wins by far. But in terms of practical use, Wurgen’s are better.

Ludwig’s stash contained rare materials—resources money alone couldn’t buy. In contrast, Wurgen’s mainly consisted of functional artifacts, including weapons and tools designed for combat.

These don’t seem like they were just collected for the sake of it... hmm, were they meant for the Einherjar?

Many of the artifacts had properties related to spatial erosion, barrier destruction, and elemental control. In other words, it was equipment clearly designed to counter specific threats. Their condition was also remarkably well-maintained.

...Should I take a few?

Currently, Se-Hoon only had two weapons suited for battle. Abgrund, an unbreakable sword that could deliver devastating strikes, and the Sin-Eclipsing Blade that indiscriminately burned both friend and foe.

The Pilgrim’s Incense Burner became useless once I mastered his power. And the Phantasmal Spyblade is basically just a decorative piece.

There was also the Celestial Infinity Blade, which was why Se-Hoon never felt weapon-starved, but having a few more tools at his disposal certainly wouldn’t hurt. Besides, they were relics he had inherited, meaning there was no reason to hold back.

So, after collecting the most useful of the lot, he returned to the lab. Only one task remained.

What’d he do with Zayed’s Soul Crystal...

Zayed—Amir’s cousin—had been kidnapped by the Dream Demon, who attempted to use him as a vessel to summon the Harbinger of Fragmentation. Recalling the crimson orb that contained Zayed’s soul, Se-Hoon searched the lab until he finally spotted it.

Woong-

His expression stiffened the moment his eyes laid on the blood-red sphere resting on a black cushion.

At first glance, it looked the same as when the Frost Dog first created it. However, upon closer inspection, the soul within had changed significantly—it was now far more stable than before.

This is... almost completely restored.

Zayed’s soul, once on the verge of complete erasure, had somehow been fully repaired.

Flipping through nearby research notes, Se-Hoon soon discovered the secret behind its restoration.

Of course... He applied modifications to the internal structure of the Soul Frame.

The notes detailed various experiments, applications, and even countermeasures related to soul manipulation. It seemed, while researching ways to circumvent the Soul Frame’s restrictions, they had tested the same method on Zayed, restoring his soul in the process.

So he was preparing to subdue all of humanity yet still completed the research he was asked to do? How typical of a Perfect One.

Feeling unsettled, Se-Hoon shook off the thought and observed the soul orb once more.

But why is there no reaction?

Despite being basically restored, Zayed’s soul showed no signs of movement.

Maybe Amir will know something...

Deciding to leave it where it was safest for now, Se-Hoon turned to leave.

Let’s see... if this is somewhere between reality and the Netherworld...

Activating the power of Boundaries, Se-Hoon watched the boundary surrounding the door shimmer faintly. Then, without hesitation, he grasped the doorknob and twisted it open.

Whoosh!

Through the door, a vast blue sky stretched out above—but a massive black tower cut through its expanse. Rather than re-emerging in the research facility, Se-Hoon had stepped into the Netherworld.

“Run faster! Move it!”

“Ugh...! My lungs... feel like they’re going to burst...”

“Lungs? What lungs? The dead don’t have lungs! Run with sheer willpower! WILLPOWER!”

Before him, a large training field sprawled out, filled with people engaged in intense drills. The Einherjars’ commanding shouts rang out, pushing the exhausted trainees to grit their teeth and force their bodies to keep moving.

Just moments ago, they looked like they were about to collapse. But somehow, they were pushing forward, running as if their earlier complaints had been a lie.

Of course, there was a reason: despite looking like ordinary humans, those running were undead.

As expected, the biggest hurdle is their mindset.

The Blessing of the Eternal, the new system Wurgen had implemented in the Netherworld, only granted the dead another chance at life; it didn’t immediately restore them upon death. In other words, every single person training here possessed an undead body, one that wouldn’t feel exhaustion in the same way as the living.

But since they weren’t aware of it, they still believed they could tire out—so they did.

Well, time will fix that.

They would only feel as though they were dying all over again for now, since the process would drastically improve their physical abilities. Furthermore, because no one would actually collapse, the training intensity could even be pushed higher.

Looking away, Se-Hoon turned his attention to two figures standing at the edge of the field.

“How long... has... it been...?”

“Ten minutes and thirty-one seconds, President.”

Richard, drenched in sweat, was struggling to catch his breath while Benjamin calmly observed from the side. To an onlooker, it would seem like Richard was simply standing. But in actuality, his training was the most grueling and dangerous of all.

Woong!

A wavy, distorted boundary flickered around Richard’s entire body. His lack of control meant the lines frequently fluctuated, and each time they did, his body was slowly eroded by the Netherworld.

Whoosh!

“Agh...!”

His balance wavered, allowing the darkness to engulf half his body in the blink of an eye. Yet, despite the danger, Richard refused to stop.

Then, just as Richard’s boundary was on the verge of collapsing completely—

“I think that’s enough.”

Having been silently watching, Se-Hoon lightly tapped Richard’s back with his index finger.

Swish-

The darkness swallowing Richard retreated in a flash, warded off by a pristine, unwavering line reforming around his body. The boundary was established once more.

“Huff... Huff...”

Seeing that the difference between the boundary he had created and the one Se-Hoon had just restored was worlds apart, Richard could only let out a bitter smile as he steadied his breath.

“If you flex on me like that, how am I supposed to stay motivated—”

“Mr. President.”

Se-Hoon’s firm tone cutting him off made Richard flinch before he forced an awkward smile.

“Come on, it’s just us here. You don’t have to be so formal—”

“I told you not to overexert yourself during training. If you enjoy dangerous training so much, would you like to cross the Netherworld with me?”

“...I apologize.”

Richard immediately bowed his head, his posture exuding guilt. Staring down at him, Se-Hoon frowned in disapproval. He understood Richard was excited about gaining the ability to wield the power of Boundaries after the last incident, but that was no excuse to be so reckless.

Does he think he’s safe just because we have the Soul Nail? Maybe I should just ban the use of it.

Sensing the tense atmosphere as Se-Hoon brooded, Richard glanced at Benjamin, who had been silently observing.

“Mr. Lee, this is the investigation report you requested earlier.”

“...Give it here.”

Shooting Richard one last glare, Se-Hoon took the file from Benjamin and carefully reviewed its contents.

“There don’t seem to be any serious criminals.”

“Yes. We checked the ones we found before, and it turns out they were wrongfully accused.”

Se-Hoon scanned the personal data listed in the file again.

The people who had received the Blessing of the Eternal varied in occupation, age, and nationality. However, there was one common factor among them all.

If it’s not based on any legal standards... then it must be Wurgen’s personal values.

It made sense. There was no benefit to reviving heinous criminals or demonized individuals.

Still, that didn’t mean there weren’t problems, as the selection process had a few loopholes that could be exploited.

“Richard, I have a question for you.”

“Hm? What is it?”

“What do you think will happen if people find out that demonized individuals can’t receive the Blessing of the Eternal?”

Richard paused just as he was about to answer, having realized the implication. His voice grew heavy. “...They’ll start turning their enemies into demons before killing them.”

Forcing a human to undergo demonization wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t impossible. And unless the Blessing of the Eternal had the ability to recognize such causality, there was no guarantee that it could prevent such abuse.

“We should keep this condition a secret. Publicly, we’ll make it seem like criminals and demonized individuals are included as well.”

“You mean we should treat them equally? Or frame it as a punishment?”

“As a punishment, of course. That way, people won’t try anything stupid.”

There was always a chance that the truth would come out someday. But Se-Hoon wasn’t concerned about that distant future—by the time that happened, he should have eradicated the Abyss of Demons entirely already.

“Got it. I’ll handle it that way. Benjamin, later...”

Without pause, Richard began issuing orders to Benjamin.

The sight made Se-Hoon raise an eyebrow in mild curiosity. Although just moments ago, Richard had seemed like a training recluse who wanted nothing more than to train all day, he was handling an enormous workload.

Handed the mantle by Wurgen upon his death, Richard had been working to reorganize the UD Group, overseeing the corporate divisions while also managing the dozens of younger siblings who had stayed out of the last incident. On top of that, he had also been negotiating with external factions and helping to establish a stable system based on the Blessing of the Eternal.

Right now, he was as busy as Gregory was.

If it were me, I would’ve just sold everything and called it a day.

Richard had once claimed to have no attachment to the group, so why was he working so hard?

Unable to figure it out, Se-Hoon just asked him directly. “Are you satisfied with this, your current job?”

“Not at all. I’d like to quit immediately if I could.”

Richard let out a frustrated sigh. His father had basically dumped the president’s position onto him without a second thought—how could he possibly enjoy it?

Se-Hoon had thought the same, so he stared at Richard in silence for a moment. “Then... why are you working so hard?”

“Because...”—Richard glanced toward the black tower in the distance and made a bitter smile—“it was my father’s dying wish.”

To most people, Wurgen would always be remembered as a ruthless corporate overlord and an omnipotent Perfect One.

But through the recent incident, Richard had come to see him differently. He was a corrupt businessman; a cold-blooded monster with no regard for others; a sociopath who treated even his own children as disposable tools.

And yet...

He was also a foolish parent who, despite having lost all his memories, still tried to bring his son back to life.

“...”

In truth, Richard had wrestled with the thought that his very existence had been nothing more than a replacement for his deceased older brother. But, in the end, he still chose to accept his father for who he was.

“Because I’m his son... this much is the least I can do.”

A notification message appeared before Se-Hoon’s eyes. Having heard Richard’s quiet confession, Se-Hoon’s expression twisted into exasperation.

...What an idiot.

How was someone like Richard—so earnest and upright—raised by that man? As Se-Hoon clicked his tongue at the absurdity of it all, Richard let out a cough, trying to shift the mood.

“Anyway, I’ll do what I can. That way, when I die and meet him again, I can say something to piss him off.”

“And what are you planning to say?”

“Hmm... Maybe something like, ‘Hey, I screwed up your company!’”

Imagining Wurgen’s reaction, Richard chuckled.

And Se-Hoon found himself grinning as well.

“Then I should give you a gift to help you achieve that goal.”

“A gift?”

Confused, Richard watched as Se-Hoon pulled something from his void pocket.

“That’s...”

A finger bone inscribed with dense runes: the Eternal Nocturne’s Phalanx.

Richard’s eyes widened in surprise. He had never seen it in person, but he knew just how valuable it was.

“Take it.”

“I-I can’t possibly—”

“It’s fine. I don’t need it anymore.”

Despite Se-Hoon’s insistence, Richard still hesitated. Then, all of a sudden, Se-Hoon felt a strange pulse from within his chest.

Thump-

It was a sensation eerily similar to when he used Bond Recreate.
