The Red Dragon Just Wants To Do As It Pleases-Chapter 489 - 292: Full-Blown Morning Temper
Dusk draped itself over Montero Town by the coast, smothering the entirety in a tranquil veil of twilight. ๐๐ฃ๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐๐ง๐ ๐ง๐๐.๐๐๐บ
As he watched the group of Dragon Lords from Skanis depart from the skies above Montero Town, David narrowed his eyes and handed the stack of โThunder Dragon Mace Ordersโ from his claw to his diligent Black Dragon secretary at his side, kindly instructing her,
"Collect these contracts, Viola. Youโve been working hard during this period."
Ever since Nifadora left, David, lacking his capable wifeโs constant support in managing their territories, was completely at a loss. Not adept at detailed management, he had at one point nearly driven his father, Attilicia, to exhaustion and thoughts of desertion. Alianna, the Drow half-blood who had defected from Mother Superior Flavia, turned out to be a master at governance. But the inherent nature of the Drow, as a cursed race, dictated that while David could make use of them, he could not grant them his absolute trust. Perhaps the only exception among his Drow subordinates were those like Hiatt, who had pledged her own soul and that of her brother, Kraidian, outright to David. She was still in charge of the alchemical trade at the Evil Scale Fortress in Barto Hell, providing a continuous cash flow to David and his father.
Fortunately, at this critical moment, Viola, his clever and nimble Black Dragon secretary, stepped in to relieve David of many complex territorial matters.
Taken aback by the praise from David, which she had been eagerly awaiting, Viola couldnโt help feeling a surge of pride and excitement.
"Itโs my duty, Your Highness David Uthos. Itโs all thanks to your excellent guidance."
She tried hard to appear nonchalant and indifferent, but her incessantly swishing tail betrayed her joyful mood.
Meanwhile, with her acute sensitivity, Viola noticed something was amiss with Davidโs expression and asked with concern,
"Our Montero Multicolor Conference was such a resounding success. Why do you still seem... not very happy?"
David opened his mouth. Owing to his trust in Viola, he thought for a moment and then decided to voice his concerns.
"Itโs too quiet."
"What?" Viola was somewhat puzzled.
"The High Elves," David said, his eyes narrowed. "They were too quiet."
"When we seized control of their Moon Goddess Chosen, they took no action. Perhaps they were not yet prepared to mount a rescue.
"Later, when we acquired the Mithril Enigma Lock in Skanis, they seemed unperturbed. Alicia mentioned they had forged five such locks back in the day, so their reaction was understandable.
"We have now made preliminary progress in deciphering the Dragon Mad Lock, or at least in shielding some of its effects, and have made this knowledge entirely public. Logically, they should find this outcome absolutely intolerable."
Such actions would be an utter desecration of the Elvesโ four millennia of tacit endurance and plans for vengeance!
To prevent the High Elves from sabotaging the Thunder Dragon Mace trade fair, he had even used the Authority of Arrogance to preemptively move the Tokamak Fortress core thirteen kilometers underground. Furthermore, he had made preparations for the worst, implementing the highest standard of territorial defense.
But even as the Feast of Dragons concluded, there was still no move from their side, which left David feeling as if he had kicked with all his might into a pile of cotton.
Or could it be...
"Perhaps... itโs because the two Dragon Gods have left..." Viola ventured cautiously.
"Maybe," David replied with a smile.
If that was the case, then the High Elf gods were being... far too arrogant.
You see, although Tiamat and Bahamut had disappeared, his mother Pafila, the newly ascended Dragon God, was still in power. She was even assuming the divine responsibilities associated with Tiamat, the Chromatic Dragon Queen. As for Bahamutโs priesthood, Landis, the Scales of Justice, and Tamara, the Lady of Mercyโa Dragon God coupleโmight be temporarily managing it.
This meant the legacy and faith of the Dragons still persisted.
David could not believe that such a petty race as the High Elves would stand by. They wouldnโt let dragonkind break free from their shackles and control before ensuring their complete annihilation.
Amid the convergence of multiple sources of information, the only explanation David could trust and understand was this:
The maneuvers Tiamat had arranged in advance were taking effect.
With Pafilaโs assistance, during the divine battle where they schemed against Kampas, the War God, Tiamat not only seized the War Priesthood, but the Spider Goddess Rose also reclaimed the powerful divine status she had long been denied, all amidst this feast of division.
She could finally contend with her ex-husband Corellon, who had stripped everything from her and then kicked her into the Abyssal Depths. Now, she could stand on equal footing with him.
The increasingly intense military conflicts between the High Elves and the Drow beneath the surface across multiple planes during this period served as clear evidence.
It was just a matter of time before a full-scale war, in the truest sense, would erupt.
All one could say was, Old Lady Rose was damn impressive!
It was also time to guard against any schemes that might come from this Spider Queen.
This was why David had never fully trusted the Drow:
Only heaven knew what bizarre reasons might provoke their betrayal.
Betrayal was in the nature of the Drow.
It was also their fate.
Pitiable, yet lamentable.
"Tighten security. I need to rest for a bit. Remember to call me if anything happens."
It might be a few days, perhaps even a year and a half.
What he really needed was a complete slumber, but right now, there wasnโt time for that.
It was all thanks to the "blessing" of the two Dragon Gods. The recent period had been filled with one tense and exciting incident after another. Bahamutโs last escapade, in particular, had almost brought David โback from the dead.โ
He needed some time to relax his nerves, which were wound far too tightly.
Without waiting for Violaโs response, David performed his own version of the โdisappearing actโ right before his Black Dragon secretary.
He dived directly into the rippling sands as if submerging himself. Even though it wasnโt Violaโs first time seeing this, she still looked impressively puzzled.
She immediately pounced like a curious large cat, dug around in the sand where David had vanished, licked her paws, and then tilted her head in confusion.
ใMeanwhile, deep undergroundใ
David finally lay down on the Tokamak core.
He had to pull this thing back up.
It was a massive undertaking.
Maybe Iโll deal with it when I wake up...
Having "feasted" well for the "New Year," he suddenly felt very reluctant to move.
Sloth
For a moment, even the Mana Energy particles still circulating within the Tokamak core seemed to quiet down and enter a state of rest, following Davidโs lethargy.
But just as David was rolling his eyes, about to fall into a deep slumber...
A faint tremor brushed through the tectonic plates like ripples on water.
David, who was just preparing to sleep, abruptly opened his crimson, wild vertical pupils.
Wrath
Like a large cat, fully irritated upon waking.
