Chapter 27 - Behind the runes lies a Tiny Giant (2)

The Town of Rouen was a large town of holy trinity and whiteness. Unable to afford marbles of expensive price and taxes, the buildings were filled with white stones of runed, holy magic, mass-produced exclusively under the order of the leading acolyte. The kind baron, who managed this land, agreed with the production, and so Demond now peered into the street, roads, buildings, even some stalls along the side and shops with some wooden signboards, all filled with the signature white stones of runes, a bizarre image mixed with a slight wood and glass here and there, as if each and every paranoid households were zealous followers of the divines.

Well in truth, the witch knew clearly there was only one zealous follower here in this town, but twenty years of isolation still left her gasping at this ridiculous scenery. She was the one who suggested 'if these cheap runes could last longer, it would be easy defence against the demon', yet the last thing she expects was the old hag taking the advice to heart, let alone implementing it across the entire town.

Walking on the stoned road that would have made a vampire jump in pain of the holiness, she frowned towards Adrei, who now keeps a distance from her at her request. With some magic, their faces and special parts like tails were enveloped by a special, frosted fog of her making, though the Queen claimed it as unnecessary for no one would recognise their appearance in their transformed states.

"I forgot to ask, but just in case, can you do telecom magic?" The witch glanced at a stall with a crowd, the stall's table filled with carved figurines of her daughter, the hero, putting an awkward smile on the mother's face.

"Unfortunately, only my sister, the third elder, had the capability for doing so in this world, an exclusivity not unlike your pet's ability to portal at short distance." The dragon sighed as she stretched, the crowd's bustling vibes comforting the peacekeeper's emptiness from her arms.

"Then I guess we'll have to notify the landlord first." The witch sighed as she glanced at the floor of her friend's handiwork. "The old hag won't refuse to meet anyone in her seclusion, but it's better if we go through her daughter first for the meeting."

"A fair choice, so." The dragon extended her hand for the witch with confidence as a husband. "If we are going to request a meeting for a marriage ceremony as well, should we not at least look the part?"

Demond rolled her eyes, as she took the hand without much rejection. "Remember, no touching until...until the tavern."

"Alright." The dragon nodded with a smile.

"I-if you behave, then..." the former old man's knowledge in the forbidden corner was snatched up, as she mustered up the courage for a temptation for the dragon's obedience with a blush.

"If you behave, we can do...whatever you want in the tavern."

"....alright." The dragon nodded with a wider smile, her scales heating up as her excited mana nearly surged out of her nostril in a deep heave.

As the couple crossed the street in an awkward silence, thanks to the out-of-nowhere enticement from the witch, moreso on the dragon's attempt to calm her boiling desires, they soon arrived into an paved road. This time, marbles with runes instead of rocks filled the road, as another chuckle came from the witch's ridiculed face.

"The old hag must had gone mad. Marble roads, really?"

Muttering under her breath with Adrei's chuckles echoing behind her, the witch marched towards the baron's mansion gate, surrounded by a wall of white marble, gleaming under the midday sun. The guards at the gates, dressed in silver-plated armor, eyed them curiously, but the sight of Adrei's crest, the symbol of the Dragon Kingdom, was enough to grant them immediate entry. The witch felt a twinge of nostalgia as they passed through the garden that had been meticulously tended to. It had been years since she'd last seen it, and she couldn't help but admire the beauty that the old hag had created here.

In the midst of the garden, however, stood a figure that bring her brows to raise, as they dissipated the fogs surrounding them and headed towards the mansion. It was none other than the Baron's daughter, Selene. The young lady had grown into a beauty, her green hair cascading down her back, and her eyes as sharp as ever.

Most notable was Selene's attire. Instead of the typical noblewoman's garb, she was dressed in a light armor, the material akin to the scales of a dragon, and a sword at her side. A knight's garb. The witch's eyes squinted, wondering if the old baron had gone mad as well, turning her daughter into a warrior.

"Oh, uh..." Selene's cute voice stuttered as she saw the two approaching figures. She looked utterly confused as two beauties approached her, one a human with golden hair and frosty blue eyes, and the other, a dragon. "Welcome to our humble abode. How...may I help you?"

"Oi, brat. Has your sense of mana dulled with age?" The witch's voice was filled with a mix of sarcasm and affection as she stepped closer to Selene. The young woman's eyes grew wide with recognition, and she took a step back, her hand reflexively going to her sword.

"Uh...uh...Uncle Demond?" Selene's hand hovered over her sword, her eyes flickering between the witch and the dragon, her mind racing to piece together the puzzle.

"It is me indeed, brat. And yes, in case you were wondering, this is not disgusie magic." The witch tipped her garb, revealing the 'pillows' underneath. "Due to an unforseen incident of me being flamed into a crispy turkey, I was revived in a new body under a conditon."

Selene's eyes grew wider, the hand that once hovered over her sword now grabbing the handle firmly. "A condition? And who's this?" She pointed at Adrei, her gaze flickering from the golden crest to the dragon's smiley expression that exuded only politeness.

"My poorly consented husband, Adrei, the peacekeeper of this Era, if you recognise her golden scales." The witch's tone remained casual, yet a hint of annoyance could be heard, as if the dragon's identity was a joke she was tired of telling.

"A-adrei the Peacekeeper?! The one who fought alongside the hero?" Selene's grip tightened on her sword, the tremble in her voice betraying a mix of awe and fear. She took another step back, her eyes darting between the witch and the dragon. "W-what brings you to Rouen?"

"None other than to find the old hag, my dear." The witch smirked as Selene's eyes grew even larger, her mind likely racing with questions. "But first, tell us where your mother is for a certain matter. And yes, it's about your favorite subject: us and our unfortunate encounters with the undying creatures of the night."

Selene's hand fell from her sword as she regained her composure. She knew better than to startle her mother's old friend, especially when last time she was 'flown' to meet the clouds during her last visit. "Ah, yes, Mother is in her study. I will take you there immediately. But, uh, is Miss Adrei coming along as well?"

"Miss Adrei can come along too, there would be no secrets between old friends." The witch admired at Selene's stiff smile, the dragon's presence a nice testament against the daughter's usual rebellious streak.

"A-ah...I understand. Then, please." Selene led the way into the grand mansion, her armor clinking with each step she took on the marble floors. The witch couldn't help but feel a sense of déjà vu as they walked through the corridors, paintings and crosses of metal trimmings adorning the walls. It was as if the very air was suffused with holy magic, a stark contrast to the warmth and comfort she was used to in the dragon's embrace moments ago.

As they approached the baron's study, Selene's steps grew slower, as if she were steeling herself for an unpleasant conversation. The witch knew the feeling all too well; she'd had her fair share of those with the baron herself in the past.

"Who-in-the-hell's-name do you think you are, barging into my study unannounced?" The voice was like a whip crack in the silence, and Selene visibly flinched, her eyes shooting to the dragon as if seeking reassurance.

The hallway was stunned with a silence, knawing away at the daughter's sanity as she stepped aside. The door was ajar, revealing the baron's study, a room that screamed of knowledge and power with the smell of parchments and ink. The witch stepped in, her eyes meeting the stern gaze of Lady Adil, the Baron's wife, who sat at her desk, surrounded by scrolls and books that looked more like a library than a place of leisure.

The hag was short and stocky, with a stern face that could make the most stoic of demons quiver, her narrow eyes squinting with the aged sight as she studied the two figures before her. The witch couldn't help but feel a weird sense of embarrassment, like university students gathering after a wild night out, and suddenly realizing one of their old teachers had been with them for the whole time.

"Adil. It's been a while." The witch greeted her old friend, her tone a blend of sass and affection, towards the hag that looked more like a witch than she did.
